U.S. Secretary of State Blinken arrived in China on Wednesday (April 24) amid growing tension between the two countries over sanctions and tariffs. He will meet officials in Shanghai and Beijing, with uncertainty about a meeting with President Xi Jinping. Blinken will discuss various issues, including the crises in Ukraine and the Middle East, cross-strait tensions, and the South China Sea situation. The U.S. are concerned about China aiding Russia’s military production and seek China’s cooperation in de-escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly between Israel and Iran. The U.S. also emphasizes peace across the Taiwan Strait and urges restraint ahead of Taiwan’s new president’s inauguration. The visit aims to improve direct communication between the U.S. and China, focusing on issues agreed upon by Presidents Biden and Xi, like counternarcotics, military communication, and AI. After a recent phone call and Treasury Secretary Yellen’s visit, friction remains over China’s industrial overcapacity and potential global impact. President Biden wants to triple tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum. China is frustrated with U.S. measures and direction of ties. Despite the U.S. saying it doesn’t seek full decoupling from China, it wants to protect key technologies. China questions if these measures are becoming too restrictive. Jeff Mahon of Canada West Foundation highlighted the importance of managing policy shifts smoothly to prevent derailing the overall relationship. 04.24.2024 ————————— For more follow @eastasia_storiestogether Source of the article: Nikkei Asia / South China Morning Post Source of the picture: Pool photo by Mark Schiefelbein #wednesdaynews #dailynews #EastAsia #USChina #Geopolitics #China #USA #Blinken #XiJinping

South Korea’s high court began a public hearing on Tuesday for a case brought by two dozen young environmental activists against the government, alleging failure to protect them by not addressing climate change. This is Asia’s first climate-related litigation, with four petitions dating back to 2020. The hearing follows a ruling by Europe’s top human rights court against Switzerland for not doing enough to combat climate change, while courts in Australia, Brazil, and Peru are also considering similar cases. The plaintiffs argue that South Korea’s current climate plans are not sufficient to keep temperature increase within the 1.5 degrees Celsius. Lawyers for the government assured the court that the authorities were working to reduce carbon emissions without infringing on basic rights, denying discrimination against youth and suggesting adjustments to annual carbon reduction goals. Last year, South Korea revised down its 2030 targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the industrial sector. However, it maintained its national goal of cutting emissions by 40% of 2018 levels in what it called a reasonable adjustment. 04.24.2024 ————————— For more follow @eastasia_storiestogether Source of the article: The Asahi Shimbun Source of the picture: Anthony Kuhn / NPR #wednesdaynews #dailynews #EastAsia #SouthKorea #Court #Justice #Environment #ClimateChange #ClimateLitigation #ClimateAction #CarbonEmission #Pollution

On Tuesday afternoon, Taro Aso, a former Japanese prime minister, met ex-U.S. President Donald Trump in New York to apparently build ties with the Republic front-runner ahead of November’s presidential election. The meeting ran for one hour, taking place following a session of Trump’s criminal trial. Aso, the current vice president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, is the latest foreign leader to meet with Trump this month, following British Foreign Secretary David Cameron and Polish President Andrzej Duda. Aso’s visit to New York is reminiscent of Abe’s, who became the first foreign leader to visit Trump after his 2016 presidential victory. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi on Tuesday said the Japanese government was not involved in the New York trip and Aso was acting in a personal capacity. Aso’s visit to New York comes on the heels of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s summit with U.S. President Joe Biden in Washington in which Japan’s commitment to its alliance with the United States was emphasized. 04.24.2024 ————————— For more follow @eastasia_storiestogether Source of the article: Nikkei Asia Source of the picture: Courtesy of the Trump Campaign / Via Jiji #wednesdaynews #dailynews #EastAsia #Japan #JapanNews #TaroAso #DonaldTrump #NewYork #USPresidentialElection #LiberalDemocraticParty #DavidCameron #AndrzejDuda #Abe #FumioKishida #JoeBiden

The ruling People Power Party’s (PPP) former interim leader, Han Dong-hoon is distancing himself from President Yoon Suk Yeol after the party’s crushing defeat in the April 10 general election. The move is seen as a preparation for a return to politics without ties with the besieged president. On April 16, Han had a dinner with the PPP’s former emergency committee members during which they exchanged words of appreciation for their contributions during the campaign and the election outcome. A few days later, Han declined Yoon’s invitation to a luncheon with members of the PPP’s emergency task force, citing deteriorating health. Amid the debate over who is responsible for the ruling party’s election defeat, Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo, a member of the ruling party, blamed Han’s campaign strategy of promoting his personal charm for the party’s defeat after his dinner with President Yoon Meanwhile, Yoon has avoided taking responsibility for the PPP’s electoral defeat, asserting that his policies were correct but failed to resonate with the public. Kim Kyung-yul, a former member of the PPP’s emergency committee under Han said Yoon’s dinner with Hong seems “very odd,” particularly considering Han’s contributions during the campaign period, and Han may have felt disappointed in Yoon. 04.24.2024 ————————— For more follow @eastasia_storiestogether Source of the article: Korea Times Source of the picture: Yonhap News #wednesdaynews #dailynews #EastAsia #SouthKorea #SouthKoreanNews #PeoplePowerParty #PPP #HanDonghoon #YoonSukYeol #DaeguMayor #ElectionDefeat #총선참패 #국민의힘 #국힘 #한동훈 #윤석열 #홍준표 #오찬제안거절 #국민의힘비상대책위원 #윤한갈등

North Korea has sent an economic delegation to Iran, raising suspicions of cooperation on weapons programs. Led by Yun Jong-ho, the delegation’s visit is rare, hinting at deepening ties between the two nations. Pyongyang and Tehran, under sanctions for their weapons programs, have a history of close relations, including a suspected exchange of ballistic missile parts. Speculation arises that along with economic cooperation, North Korea may seek to deepen military cooperation with Iran amid Russia’s war with Ukraine. In 2006, Iran publicly acknowledged that the country used North Korean missiles. Reports indicate Iran’s missile development is linked to North Korean technology, with potential collaboration on solid-fuel missile technology. Additionally, both countries are implicated in providing support to Russia in the Ukraine conflict. 04.24.2024 ————————— For more follow @eastasia_storiestogether Source of the article: Korea Times Source of the picture: Reuters-Yonhap #wednesdaynews #dailynews #EastAsia #NorthKorea #NorthKoreanNews #Iran #Pyongyang #Tehran #RussiaUkraineWar #NorthKoreanMissiles #북한 #이란 #북한이란 #탄도미사일 #러시아 #우크라이나 #군사협력 #반미연대

According to Finance Ministry data released Wednesday, Japan marked its third consecutive fiscal year of trade deficit, reaching 5.89 trillion yen ($38 billion) for the fiscal year ending in March. The fiscal 2023 trade deficit was about the same as what was recorded in fiscal 2021, and smaller than the fiscal 2022 trade deficit, which saw the economy impacted by the Ukraine war and soaring energy prices. Japan imported food and exported automobiles, auto parts, and electrical machinery. The biggest trade deficits were in the Middle East, mainly Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, as well as Australia and Indonesia. However, Japan maintained trade surpluses with the U.S. and some European countries. The recent depreciation of the Japanese yen impacted the trade balance, increasing import costs while boosting the value of exports when converted into yen. The U.S. dollar’s current exchange rate, above 150 yen, contrasts with the 130-yen mark from a year ago. 04.17.2024 ————————— Source of the article: The Asahi Shimbun Source of the picture: AFP #wednesdaynews #dailynews #EastAsia #Japan #JapanNews #日本 #FinanceMinistry #財務部 #TradeDeficit #貿易赤字 #Depreciation #減価償却費 #Ukrainewar #ウクライナ戦争 #MiddleEast #中東

North Korea intensifies digital surveillance by installing cameras in schools and workplaces, collecting biometric data, and using Chinese technology. Despite challenges like poor electricity supplies and low network connectivity, the regime tightens control, bolstered by the COVID-19 pandemic measures and harsher punishments. State media reports show widespread use of surveillance tech at schools, workplaces, and airports. Experts have warned that China is exporting the technology that powers its AI-powered surveillance to countries around the world. However, the government may not yet be fully able to utilize the data it collects. The government aims to expand surveillance nationwide, drawing inspiration from China’s Orwellian system. Experts caution on the implications for citizens’ privacy and freedom, with concerns over automatic detection systems tracking movements. 04.17.2024 ————————— Source of the article: The Asahi Shimbun Source of the picture: AP Photo #wednesdaynews #dailynews #EastAsia #NorthKorea #북한 #NorthKoreanNews #북한뉴스 #DigitalServeillance #디지털감시 #surveillance #감시 #BiometricData #생체인식데이터 #Orwelliansystem #GeorgeOrwell #조지오웰1984 #Freedom #Privacy #자유 #사생활

Japan’s latest foreign policy report, Diplomatic Bluebook, emphasizes fostering a « mutually beneficial » strategic relationship with China, marking a shift to mitigate economic and security risks. The reintroduction of the term « mutually beneficial relationship based on common strategic interests » for the first time since 2019 signals Tokyo’s effort to maintain stability amid China’s rising influence. Naoko Eto, a professor of Chinese politics at Gakushuin University in Tokyo said the term ‘Strategic’ indicates that Japan and China are in a competitive relationship, but they cooperate where they can. 04.17.2024 ————————— Source of the article: Nikkei Asia Source of the picture: Prime Minister’s Office of Japan (November 16, 2023) #wednesdaynews #dailynews #EastAsia #Japan #JapanNews #日本 #일본 #ForeignPolicy #対外政策 #DiplomaticBluebook #EconomicRisk #SecurityRisk #GakushuinUniversity #学習院大学 #일본외교청서 #外交蓝皮书

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s visit to China, praised in Beijing, underscored EU divisions on how to engage with China. On Tuesday, Scholz described his meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang as calm, careful, and honest, emphasizing the need for pragmatic economic relations. Scholz adressed concerns over intellectual property theft and overcapacity, advocating for fair competition and a level playing field for companies. He refrained from endorsing EU and US claims of China “dumping cheap green technology products” on the global market. Despite the European Commission’s probe into subsidies in China’s electric vehicle sector, Scholz’s delegation signed “a joint declaration of intent on dialogue and cooperation in the field of automated and connected driving” with Chinese counterparts. German industrialists accompanying Scholz, mainly from automotive sectors, expressed optimism and discouraged confrontational approach to China. Experts raised concerns about Scholz’s softer rhetoric and exclusion of EU perspectives, fearing it could undermine EU unity. 04.17.2024 ————————— Source of the article: South China Morning Post Source of the picture: Ding Haitao/Xinhua via AP #wednesdaynews #dailynews #EastAsia #China #Germany #Beijing #GermanChancellor #OlafScholz #EU #XiJinping #LiQiang #习近平 #李强 #diplomacy #EconomicRelations #外交 #EuropeanCommission #德国 #EV #BDI

North Korea appears to have altered the official name of Kim Il-sung’s birthday from “Day of the Sun” to simply “4·15”. Previously revered as the Day of the Sun in North Korea since 1997 and celebrated as one of the country’s most important national holidays, North Korean state media has referred to Kim’s 112th birthday as “the April holiday” or “the spring holiday in April” since Feb. 18. This change, noted by South Korea’s unification ministry, suggests a possible shift in the holiday’s significance. Speculation arises about Kim Jong-un’s role in this shift, potentially aiming to center the country’s personality cult on himself rather than solely on his late grandfather, Kim Il-sung. 04.17.2024 ————————— Source of the article: The Korea Times Source of the picture: Korean Central News Agency / Yonhap #wednesdaynews #dailynews #EastAsia #NorthKorea #북한 #NorthKoreanNews #북한뉴스 #KimIlSung #BirthofKimIl-sung #DayofSun #april15 #Aprilholiday #SpringholidayinApril #SouthKorea #UnificationMinistry #Unification #KimJongun #태양절 #김일성 #주석 #4월15일 #4월명절 #김정은 #노동당 #노동신문 #금수산태양궁전

Voting for the general election kicked off Wednesday morning to elect the 22nd National Assembly. In the election, 254 seats will be directly elected and 46 proportional representation seats will be allocated to parties based on their overall vote share.   The composition of the new 300-member parliament will either empower President Yoon Suk Yeol to pursue his agenda of controversial domestic reforms or render him a lame duck for the remainder of his five-year term. As of 4 p.m., some 27.4 million, or 61.8%, of the total 44.28 million eligible voters had cast their ballots at 14,259 polling stations across the nation, according to the National Election Commission (NEC). During Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s two-day visit to Beijing, China and Russia pledged to step up cooperation in fighting terrorism on Tuesday (April 9). This commitment follows the recent deadly attack at Moscow’s Crocus City Hall, claimed by an affiliate of the Islamic State group. Lavrov’s visit underscores the deepening ties between the two nations, especially in light of increased strategic partnership since the Ukraine invasion. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, hosting Lavrov, described the bilateral relationship as “mature, resilient and profound”. He stressed that the two countries prioritize cooperation under their comprehensive strategic partnership. Both China and Russia are members of the Beijing-led Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which has an existing deal to combat terrorism, separatism and extremism. Lavrov stressed the strong bilateral ties between Russia and China, particularly after President Vladimir Putin’s reelection. He noted that the comprehensive partnership between the two countries has reached an “unprecedented level”, crediting the leadership of Putin and Xi Jinping. Concluding his visit, Lavrov held talks with President Xi, expressing admiration for China’s achievements under Xi’s leadership. Xi reciprocated by affirming China’s commitment to “strengthen bilateral communication” and “multilateral strategic coordination” with Russia. 04.10.2024 ————————— Source of the article: Nikkei Asia / The Straits Times Source of the picture: Xinhua #wednesdaynews #EastAsia #China #Russia #SergeyLavrov #Lavrov #RussiaChina #Beijing #Moscow #TerroristAttacks #AntiTerrorism #Terrorism #StrategicCooperation #IslamicState #UkraineInvasion #BilateralRelationship #diplomacy #cooperation #StrategicPartnership #ShanghaiCooperationOrganization #separatism #extremism #VladimirPutin #Putin #XiJinping #Xi

On Wednesday morning, a magnitude-7.2 earthquake hit off the coast of Hualien, Taiwan. Nine deaths and hundreds of injuries were reported as of the late afternoon by the Interior Ministry. Hualien faced damage with severely tilted buildings, broken train tracks, and cracked roads. The earthquake, the most significant in Taiwan since 1999, rattled the tech sector, prompting evacuations at chip and display facilities. Despite the quake during morning rush hour, there was minimal panic due to regular drills and preparedness measures. Japanese officials initially warned of a tsunami that could reach Okinawa. At 9:18 am, a tsunami of up to 30 cm was observed at Japan‘s Yonaguni Island, near Taiwan. The Philippines also issued a tsunami warning for four provinces in the north. Both countries later canceled the warnings. A Japan Meteorological Agency official warned of potential aftershocks and seismic activity for about a week. On Tuesday, U.S. President Joe Biden spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping for nearly two hours on various topics including TikTok ownership, disputes in the South China Sea, and American sanctions against Chinese trade and technology. Regarding a TikTok bill that aims to force TikTok to either cut ties with Chinese parent ByteDance or be banned in the U.S., Biden made sure to pass the bill into law if it passes Congress stressing national security. Biden also stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and in the South China Sea. Meanwhile, Xi Jinping referred to the Taiwan question as the first red line that must not be crossed in China-U.S. relations. Biden frames U.S. sanctions on China as risk reduction, not economic separation. In contrast, Xi argues U.S. actions stifle China‘s trade and tech advancement, citing increasing inclusion of Chinese entities in sanction lists. In addition, the two leaders discussed counter-narcotics, military-to-military dialogue and artificial intelligence. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Secretary of State Antony Blinken will be visiting China in the coming days to sustain high-level diplomacy. 04.03.2024 ————————— Follow @eastasia_storiestogether Sources of the article: Nikkei Asia Source of the picture: Reuters #wednesdaynews #EastAsia #POTUS #JoeBiden #XiJinping #China #USA #UnitedStates #TikTok #TikTokBan #SouthChinaSea #AmericanSanctions #ChineseTrade #ChineseTech #Sanctions #Trade #Taiwan #ByteDance #AI #AntonyBlinken #JanetYellen

The South Korean government announced that it will “exponentially increase” the budget for technology research and development for 2025. The announcement reverses the direction from February, when the government abruptly cut a 14.7% budget of 26.5 trillion won ($19.7 billion) in scientific technology R&D, sparking an outcry from scientists and researchers. The plan seems to attract more voters ahead of the upcoming general election. 04.03.2024 ————————— Follow @eastasia_storiestogether Sources of the article: The Korea Herald Source of the picture: #wednesdaynews #EastAsia #southkorea #Technology #Science #R&D #Research #Development #Scientists #Researchers #Budget #Election #Voters #Protests

On Tuesday, a suicide bomber rammed a vehicle into a convoy of Chinese engineers in northwest Pakistan, resulting in the deaths of five Chinese nationals. This marks the third attack on Chinese interests within a week, following incidents at a Pakistan naval air base and a strategic port in Balochistan. China strongly condemned the attack and affirmed its commitment to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor under the Belt and Road Initiative. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated China’s support for Pakistan’s anti-terrorism efforts and called for a thorough investigation. Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong visited the site of the Dasu hydropower project on Wednesday and stressed the need for enhanced security. Despite security concerns, the attack is unlikely to significantly impact the economic cooperation between China and Pakistan in the long run. 03.27.2024 ———————— For more follow @eastasia_storiestogether ———————— Source of the article: South China Morning Post Source of the picture: AFP ———————— #wednesdaynews #eastasia #eastasiastoriestogether #china #China #suicidebomber #terrorist #terrorism #terroristattack #attack #pakistan #Pakistan #chineseworkers #ChineseWorkers #ChineseNationals #EconomicCorridor #BRI #BeltandRoadInitiative #beltandroadinitiative #investigation #foreignaffairs #ForeignAffairs #chineseambassador #ChineseEmbassy #JiangZaidong #Dasu #chineseinvestment #security #economiccooperation #NationalSecurity

In June 2021, China complained to the World Trade Organization (WTO) about tariffs Australia placed on its steel products. Back then, bilateral relations between the countries were at a low point. On Tuesday, the WTO panel found that Australia’s Anti-Dumping Commission didn’t follow rules set in the anti-dumping agreement. On Wednesday, Australia’s Trade Minister Don Farrell declared that Australia agrees with the WTO’s ruling and supports a rules-based trading system. In 2020, China imposed sanctions on Australian goods, resulting in an estimated loss of $13 billion to the Australian economy. Although relations have improved since and most of the tariffs have been lifted, tariffs on wine and rock lobster persist. In April of this year, Australia halted a WTO complaint to facilitate the reopening of the Chinese market for Australian barley, signalling efforts to mend ties with Beijing under the new government. Additionally, Australia paused another WTO dispute over China’s sanctions on Australian wine in exchange for a review by China to be completed by the end of March. 03.27.2024 ———————— For more follow @eastasia_storiestogether ———————— Source of the article: The Asahi Shimbun Source of the picture: Linfeng/EPA ———————— #wednesdaynews #eastasia #eastasiastoriestogether #china #China #Australia #australia #WorldTradeOrganization #worldtradeorganization #WTO #dumping #AntiDumpingCommission #AntiDumping #Trade #DonFarrell #sanctions #economicsanctions #australianeconomy #chineseeconomy #steelproducts #steel #tariffs #wine #rocklobster #complaint #dispute #chinesemarket

While Beijing attracts foreign investment and tries to stop capital overflow, Chinese President Xi Jinping met top U.S. business executives and then held talks with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on Wednesday. Xi told the U.S. executives that China and the U.S. should seek common ground on major issues while embracing differences on minor ones. The foreign executives’ meetings with Xi rarely occur since the business leaders are usually guided to meet Premier Li Qiang, China‘s second-in-command. It implies that the Premier’s role has diminished in a government strongly controlled by Xi. Later in the day, Xi met with the Dutch PM Rutte. He opposed decoupling or breaking the industrial supply chain between the two countries. He reminded his counterpart that the Dutch government blocked the chip machine manufacturer ASML from exporting chipmaking machines to China. In response to Xi’s remark, Rutte appeared to agree with him, saying that the decoupling policy was not a priority for the Dutch government. The meetings with foreign business leaders and the Dutch PM come a week after Beijing announced a liberalization plan to draw in foreign capital and workers while the net foreign direct investment in China plunged 80% to reach $33 billion in 2023. 03.27.2024 ———————— For more follow @eastasia_storiestogether ———————— Source of the article: Nikkei Asia Source of the picture: ———————— #wednesdaynews #eastasia #eastasiastoriestogether #china #China #XiJinping #business #Netherlands #netherlands #MarkRutte #dutch #dutchpolitics #chinesepolitics #foreigninvestment #ChinesePremier #LiQiang #supplychain #electronicchip #ASML #exports #FDI #liberalization #foreigncapital #foreignworkers #ChineseFDI

Canberra welcomed China’s Foreign Minister (FM) Wang Yi on Wednesday to “stabilize” and improve relations between China and Australia. After a discussion on trade, regional security and human rights with her Chinese counterpart, FM Penny Wong declared that Australia wants “a stable, productive and mature” relationship with China. Former Prime Minister Morrison’s inquiry into COVID-19 origins strained the ties between the two countries, leading to trade restrictions on Australian exports to China. Australian wine, rock lobsters and some slaughterhouses are still subject to tariffs. Australia FM Wong conveyed Australia’s “shock” at the suspended death sentence given to Australian writer Yang Hengjun, convicted of alleged espionage. Wong also shared her concerns about maritime security and South China Sea disputes. Chinese FM Wang Yi said the countries had “highly complementary” economies, and their common interests outweighed their differences. The report of the U.S. conservative think tank, the Heritage Foundation warned that China may intervene in the upcoming South Korean general election, hoping to elect more Beijing-friendly politicians in the National Assembly. Experts say South Korea should be aware of China’s potential intervention in the upcoming elections, considering that Beijing has used several methods to influence Korea’s public opinion through disinformation campaigns and China’s secret police station. In November last year, the National Intelligence Service(NIS) detected 38 fake Korean-language news websites that were allegedly operated by Chinese companies to influence public opinion by distributing pro-China and anti-U.S. content. A Korean professor in Chinese studies called for stronger enforcement and legislative measures against cyber threats that could intervene in elections. 03.21.2024 ———————— Do you think China will intervene in the elections? ———————— For more follow @eastasia_storiestogether ———————— Source of the article: Courtesy of National Intelligence Service Source of the picture: The Korea Times ———————— #wednesdaynews #eastasia #eastasiannews #eastasiastoriestogether #china #heritagefoundation #us #thinktank #usthinktank #election #spy #espionage #intervention #politics #politicians #probeiging #publicopinion #disinformation #antius #campaign #policestation #nationalintelligenceservice #nis #fakenews #enforcement #legislative #measures #cyberthreats

According to a report in the official People’s Daily on Wednesday, China started an international manhunt targeting fugitive corrupt officials and cross-border corruption related to its Belt and Road Initiative. The Belt and Road initiative was initiated by President Xi Jinping in 2013. Over 150 countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, and Latin America signed up for the project, giving opportunities for Beijing to promote economic integration. The Belt and Road initiative faces scrutiny for its integrity and transparency on the global stage. The US and its allies view it as a geopolitical tool enabling China to increase its influence through loan arrangements. In response to mounting concerns, Beijing has repeatedly promised to uphold integrity by combatting bribery and corruption. Emphasizing the need for a “clean Silk Road”, the CCDI aims to combat cross-border corruption and recover illicit assets. 03.21.2024 ———————— For more follow @eastasia_storiestogether ———————— Source of the article: South China Morning Post Source of the picture: Xinhua/Wang Ye ———————— #wednesdaynews #eastasia #eastasiannews #eastasiastoriestogether #china #peoplesdaily #manhunt #corruption #corruptofficial #fugitive #beltandroadinitiative #beltandroad #economicintegration #geopolitics #loans #integrity #bribery #illicit

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has dismissed a striking doctor’s request to intervene in the government’s order for doctors to return to work. ILO said the Korean Intern and Resident Association is not recognized as a labor union eligible for an ILO procedure. According to the ILO’s secretariat, the Korean Intern Resident Association did not meet the criteria of an ILO constituent, which is limited to government, domestic, or international labor unions. The doctor’s group had accused the government’s order of violating the ILO convention against forced labor and had sent a letter to the ILO to ask for intervention in the government’s back-to-work order. The medical group immediately submitted another request for intervention after receiving the answer from ILO, citing that it is the only organization representing junior doctors. 03.21.2024 ———————— For more follow @eastasia_storiestogether ———————— Source of the photo: Yonhap News Source of the article: The Korea Herald ———————— #wednesdaynews #eastasia #eastasiannews #eastasiastoriestogether #theinternationallabourorganization #ilo #doctors #government #secretariat #forcedlabor #intervention #arbitration #request #juniordoctors #southkorea #politics #governement #education #health #healthsector #publicpolicy

Japan’s central bank, the Bank of Japan (BOJ), raised interest rates for the first time in 17 years, moving from -0.1% to a range of 0%-0.1%. The hike follows a period of rising wages and consumer prices. In 2016, the BOJ had implemented negative rates to stimulate the economy*. The decision to hike rates was influenced by major corporations increasing worker wages. However, the BOJ doesn’t anticipate further rate hikes soon, aiming to maintain accommodative financial conditions. With this change, there are no longer any countries with negative interest rates. During the pandemic, central banks globally reduced interest rates to mitigate the effects of lockdowns, with some implementing negative rates; however, in response to rising prices, many, including the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of England, have been aggressively raising interest rates. *when the rate is negative, people have to pay to deposit money in a bank. Therefore, people are more inclined to spend their money. 03.20.2024 ———————— For more follow @eastasia_storiestogether ———————— Source of the article: BBC Source of the picture: Reuters ———————— #wednesdaynews #eastasia #eastasiannews #eastasiastoriestogether #BankofJapan #japan #Japan #japannews #bankofjapan #centralbank #interestrates #rates #workerwages #BOJ #finance #negativeinterestrates #pandemic #mitigationpolcy #lockdown #FederalReserve #FED #BankofEngland #monetarypolicy #governmentbond #japaneseeconomy

China criticizes US ambassador Nicholas Burns for his ‘repeated negative comments’ on China. Burns said the two countries would remain “systemic rivals” for the next decade, as military and tech competition is likely to deepen. He expressed concern about China’s support for Russia and about Hong Kong’s new national security law. The Chinese Foreign Ministry warned that such comments could undermine recent efforts to improve China-US relations. New spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry Lin Jian said on Tuesday, “we oppose defining bilateral relations with competition, and smearing and attacking China. We stand against the US interfering in China’s internal affairs under the pretext of human rights and values, and restraining China’s legitimate right to development in the name of competition”. According to the North’s state-controlled Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw a drill with multiple rocket launchers on Monday, instructing his military to be ready to destroy Seoul. The drill featured 600-millimeter multiple launch rocket systems, which could be KN-25 missiles capable of delivering tactical nuclear weapons. Kim emphasized these weapons as crucial for the regime’s military strategy and warned enemies of dire consequences in case of war. Kim singled out Seoul as the primary target in a potential conflict. In January, he called South Korea his regime’s “unchanging primary enemy”. While photos depicted six simultaneous missile launches, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) suspect more launches occurred afterward. On Tuesday, President Yoon Suk Yeol pledged to scrap the previous administration’s real estate policy to make declared prices realistic and alleviate economic burdens on the public. The policy, initiated in 2020 by former President Moon Jae-in, intended to levy “fairer” taxes and bring soaring house prices under control by gradually raising the declared prices of apartments to 90% of their market prices by 2035. Yoon criticized the policy for exacerbating housing costs. He stressed the need for affordable housing and urban development efforts. He declared that his government will also purchase 100,000 units of newly built small to medium-sized homes over the next two years to lease to vulnerable people for low rent. This project is part of Yoon’s broader urban regeneration policy, along with the “New Village Project”, an initiative to renovate Seoul’s old downtown.
