Russia vetoed a U.S.-drafted UN Security Council resolution on Wednesday, aiming to prevent an arms race in outer space. The move led the United States to question Moscow's motives. The vote followed accusations from Washington about Moscow's development of an anti-satellite nuclear weapon for space, which Russia denies. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Moscow opposes placing nuclear weapons in space. "Today's veto begs the question: Why? Why if you are following the rules would you not support a resolution that reaffirms them? What could you possibly be hiding?" U.S. Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield expressed to the council post-vote. "It's baffling and it's a shame." Russia's UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia accused Washington of tarnishing Moscow's image. Nebenzia indicated that Russia would engage in negotiations with council members on its own draft resolution to maintain peace in space. "We want a ban on the placement of weapons of any kind in outer space, not just (weapons of mass destruction). But you don't want that ... Let me ask you that very same question: Why?" The number of safety incidents that could have leaked radiation at the Trident nuclear base on the Clyde has risen to the highest in 15 years, according to information released by the Ministry of Defence (MoD). One incident in 2023 at the Faslane base, near Helensburgh, was given the MoD’s worst risk rating. This is the first time this has happened since 2008. According to the MoD’s definitions, all six incidents had “actual or potential for radioactive release to the environment”. In total the MoD logged 179 nuclear safety incidents on the Clyde in 2023 and 2024, though most of them were deemed to be less serious. The MoD insisted that there had been no “radiological impact” or harm to health from any of the incidents. But it declined to provide any further details for national security reasons. Campaigners described the rise in serious safety incidents as “alarming” and “chilling”. Today, as a member of the global community, Russia has a significant responsibility to safeguard space. Therefore, we must continue to engage with Russia and make it happen. Russia on Wednesday vetoed a US-drafted United Nations Security Council resolution that called on countries to prevent an arms race in outer space. The vote came after Washington accused Moscow of developing a anti-satellite nuclear weapon to put in space, an allegation that Russia has denied. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Moscow was against putting nuclear weapons in space. “Today’s veto begs the question: Why? Why if you are following the rules would you not support a resolution that reaffirms them? What could you possibly be hiding?” US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the council after the vote. “It’s baffling and it’s a shame.” Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia accused Washington of trying to tarnish Moscow and said Russia would shortly begin negotiations with council members on its own draft resolution aimed at keeping space peaceful. “We want a ban on the placement of weapons of any kind in outer space, not just (weapons of mass destruction). But you don’t want that … Let me ask you that very same question: Why?” Nebenzia asked Thomas-Greenfield in the council. The draft resolution was put to a vote by the US and Japan after nearly six weeks of negotiations. It received 13 votes in favor, while China abstained and Russia cast a veto.
