Indian ideas of nondual awareness developed as proto-Samkhya speculations in ascetic milieus in the 1st millennium BCE, with the notion of Purusha, the witness-conscious or 'pure consciousness'. Like you might encounter a dragon any second and Londoners carrying like NBD. Every single time I see the photo box on the very corner with Westminster Bridge Road I get Clark Kent vibes. Sandpaper ballet: Wellington Mills is a 1970s co-operative estate designed by Barbara Bienias, consisting of a series of interlocking low-rise brick-and-concrete blocks, tucked away just south of Waterloo station. Itโs a really nicely executed piece of work, well maintained and handsomely landscaped - the benefit of having an committed on-site cooperative team. The principal walkway in the current estate is Oakey Lane - and hereโs why. Originally the site of a Georgian female orphanage, in the 1870s the site was acquired by John Oakey & Sons. Oakey manufactured abrasives and polishes; if anything in the Victorian home required sharpening or polishing, there was probably an Oakey product to do the job. Oakey sandpapers are still around today, but the business moved away from Wellington Mills, and is now in Stafford. From industrial site to well-designed social housing, close to the heart of London. It used to happen all the time - will it ever happen again? Incidentally, in the last photo youโll see yesterdayโs stars and stripes Lincoln Tower at the old Christ Church. Wonder wall: two Lambeth churches that copped it during the Blitz decided prudently to join forces in the pale light of peacetime; the Congregational Christ Church, a fine Victorian pile reduced to just its tower, and the Baptist Upton Chapel, razed to the ground (and no images of the old building to be found online either). Christ Church had been built in the 1870s, partly funded by the American Congregational Church (it didnโt all start with Marshall Aid). Consequently, the church tower was christened the Lincoln Tower, and the spire has a subtle stars and stripes decoration. Their Fifties solution was to retain Christ Churchโs tower, and permit an office block on the remainder of the site, with church accomodation on the ground floor. This included a rather splendid and Gaudiesque concrete screen, underpinning the offices, and complementing the old steeple. Nowadays, the churches and the offices are gone, and the whole site has been taken over by the Oasis Academy Southbank, part of a Free School consortium, and the fifties chapel has apparently been turned into a sports hall, its stained glass boarded up. Edward Bawden, Tadek Beutlich and a visit to @morleygallery !! Our current exhibition, Tadek Beutlich: Innovations in Textile & Print is on @morleygallery near Waterloo, London. The gallery is part of @morley_college which has a fascinating history which includes the story of murals made by Eric Ravilious and Edward Bawden in 1930. Sadly these murals were destroyed in the war but later the College was rebuilt and new murals were completed between 1958 and 1961 by Edward Bawden. He agreed to return to paint the murals for the new Refectory. He chose to depict stories from Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. You can see them today in @morley_college which is right next to the gallery. So a double win - Beutlich and Bawden! - Morley College, King Edward Walk Morley College is a unique place. Founded in 1889 as the first adult education centre in the UK where men and women could study together, it remains multi-faceted in many ways. Especially the building. The original Victorian frontage was extended along King Edward Walk in the early 70s by famed modernist architect John Winter adding these yellow highlights.
