Finally getting around to working on these larger canvases that have been in the studio for 2 years. I haven’t been on social media much as I’ve been a little distracted with putting the house on the market and trying to find a new home. I’ve been predominantly working on board…small works with collage. I found the collage didn’t work so well on these large canvases. There is too much bounce and using the gel plate didn’t work as well. I’ve found myself working in a different way to create the texture and layers achieved on board. With no plan of an outcome I’ve begun using colour with shapes and textures. With only my recent journey’s in mind. It’s been quite nice playing with shapes and colour. It reminds me of a painting I did in response to the students drawings from their bedroom windows during lockdown. It was called ‘360’ I didn’t plan this, although it feels like I have gone full circle. Let’s see where this WIP takes me. HGS ART Artist Marina Emphietzi @marina.emphietzi Someone emailed me the other day saying how much they prefer my fast and spontaneous paintings over my more organised ones. In most cases, I agree. The more I worry about the outcome, the tighter my hands and strokes become especially when I use oils when the process is longer; ⠀ ⠀ I like to get the best of both worlds though. A new reflection - work in progess. I think this one is ready for the pencil marks now - the finishing touches that add a fragile dynamic to the painting. I wasn't quite sure it was 'working' for me, until I brought it into the house, which always makes me see things differently. Now I feel it IS working, so I'll take the panel back out to the studio, take a deep breath and add the traces of those thin wiggly lines. Both are part of an ongoing series inspired by medieval "Dance of Death" wall paintings. It's nearly that time of year again! Went to pick up the marketing materials for this year's @surreyartistopenstudios this morning. The brochure is always a work of art itself, and this year features work by @beccacleggart. Seems appropriate too, as the Bluebells round our way are epic this year! Becca will be at Venue 100. And in calling in to the fabulous studio of @annabelrobertsceramics - who is our area coordinator - and yes, serious studio envy! - I spotted these gorgeous mugs, and found I couldn't leave without one!
