Some people inherit expensive family heirlooms from their parents. I did not. I came from a modest but spoiled upbringing. I was loved unconditionally and was everything to my mom and daddy. I was finishing up the last touches of my costume, using my heirloom from my momma. I reflect on this precious box that held my mom’s glue sticks. She was crafty (or at least tried to be 😊) and so resourceful. I’m so proud to be known as “Joy Jr” by people who absolutely loved my mom. I’ve finished. Added and checked off all the finishing touches it needed. It took me nearly two years to tackle this one. I knew the moment I took the photo, that I would love to paint it, but I kept passing it over. Little by little I’ve done paintings of many places/pictures that I once shied away from. Many of you may not be familiar with San Francisco’s Sutro Baths. You should google it. It was a magnificent place in its day. Adolph Sutro created it in 1894 to provide a swimming facility for San Franciscans. It was built into the cliffs and housed 7 swimming pools at different temps, with slides, springboards, trapezes, and high dives all enclosed in a massive glassed in structure. In one hour, the Pacific Ocean at high tide could fill the pools with the 1.7 million gallons required. There were restaurants, concerts, talent shows, and many historical and art gallery exhibits. In later years to help produce more revenue, pools were frozen to make ice skating rinks. In 1964 they started demolition for planned high rise apartments and in 1966 a fire destroyed what remained. As you can see, it has never been developed. I would have loved to see it! My parents met there while ice skating in 1945. My mom was on a date with someone else, but I guess he was a good skater and full of himself. Mom a skater? Nope! She fell and broke her wrist and my dad came along and took her to Letterman General hospital, since she was a marine and he was army. I think about 6 months later they got married. Tonight’s painting progress. A little bittersweet, but as I was finishing for the night, I was watching the late news. They featured a story about all of the historic items, artwork, fixtures, photos, etc. from the Cliff House and Sutro Baths are slated to go up for auction on March 4th. There is a group that is trying to raise money to have all the historical pieces be kept together. So, as I am bringing out the Sutro Baths ruins in my painting, they are in the news. So much history on this small edge of San Francisco....where my parents once met.....imagine all of the stories this area holds. Had so much fun exploring Marshall this weekend. I got to run on the sidewalks where my mommy and daddy met. Set on the bench where they use to sit and talk about me and what they thought I would be like. Met Marco and saw the famous fountain. I got to see Wellman hall where my mommy lived and the lot where my dad's dorm use to stand. Chased those crazy Marshall squirrels, ate at some amazing places with great food. I really prefer taking “the high road” out of the city and avoiding 101 altogether. Our last quick stop, other than Starbucks, was at this lookout above the old Sutro Baths ruins. In its day, it was a grand place with six saltwater & one freshwater pool equipped with seven slides, 30 swinging rings and a springboard. It housed a museum, an amphitheater, 517 private dressing rooms, and most importantly an ice skating rink!
