A lifer for me back two summers ago. I remember pulling over on the side of the road filled with excitement. I quickly got out of my car, grabbed my camera gear, and luckily this Black-crowned night heron stood still for quite a while to get a few shots. It stood statue position waiting for potential meal lurking around in the water. I was studying its quick bill strikes that unfortunately was nothing but miss catches. I felt lucky getting a few nice shots before it decided to take off just to prove I finally found Black-crowned night heron. I said to myself "next time you will get that catch buddy." Nice looking bird I must say. Geraldine Moodie's Women Gallery at the Jasper Historical & Cultural Centre in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan 🖼️🎨 "Geraldine Moodie was a Canadian photographer who pioneered in capturing photos of early Canadian history. She was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1854. She married John Douglas Moodie in England in 1878 and the couple first moved to western Canada, and they briefly farmed in Manitoba, then moved to Ottawa in 1885. Living in rural Canada at the turn of the twentieth century, she found herself living in a world of male dominance and a lack of women with notable social status. Despite this adversity, she was far more successful and influential than her metropolitan counterparts. She frequently accompanied her husband, John Douglas Moodie, on his travels, photographing the Innu people in the area of Hudson Bay (1904–1909). She also took photographs around Regina (1910–1911). In addition to portraits, she took images of the mounted police, ranching and wildflowers. This handsome Eastern bluebird was giving me a few common soft, low-pitched tu-a-wee calls and a nice side view portrait. I noticed from the corner of my eye a female flew in on high alert coming closer to the male calls. After I took this shot, both male and female bluebirds took off together perching on pitch pine tree that was a few feet away from me. Interesting facts: These birds are monogamous and will mate for life, but they do take new mates if their partner dies or disappears. - Location: Cattus Island County Park, New Jersey. I felt like re editing this photo that was taken back in 2017. I had my tripod and camera directly pointing to this Norway spruce branch for a reason. It's a hot spot for many songbirds to perch on. I didn't have to wait long before a House Sparrow decided to give me a portrait shot. The soft light green background made this sparrow stand out nicely. Taking this photograph under overcast conditions with little breaks of sunlight made this moment of picture taking a success. Interesting Facts: Nonbreeding/immature males are streaked brown and black. They lack the bright chestnut neck and extensive black bib of breeding males.
