Our resident wonder gecko Ben has been doing so well recently! This is not a handleable species- especially with Ben unfortunately being wild caught, but he has become more social and will come to the front of his enclosure to watch us whilst we do animal chores! We had to take him out of his enclosure today so we could give it a good clean and he was a very good boy and walked right into the travel tub with no issues. He then decided to walk across my hand when leaving the travel tub to go back into his enclosure. He didn't have to, but he did and it was such a beautiful thing considering he used to hide and scurry away from us whenever we walked past his enclosure. Normalize giving animals their space and being okay with "look don't touch" pets! It's a beautiful thing if they decide to interact with you, but it should not be forced ❤️ *When sourcing an animal, unless it's a rehome/ adoption situation- always source captive bred animals to protect individual animals and our worlds ecosystems* #wondergecko #frogeyedgecko #adopt #adoptdontshop #reptilekeeper #reptile #animalrescue #education #nonprofit #reptilerescue #rescue #gecko

The frog-eyed geckos, also called wonder geckos, include 9 recognized species of the genus Teratoscincus. Several of these species are kept as pets. These desert-dwelling geckos have an appealing, distinctive look, with notably large eyes, and a short snout. They have delicate, highly specialized scalation that is believed to aid in thermoregulation, as well as a tendency to drop their tail (caudal autonomy). These features make frog-eyed geckos too delicate for handling. This cute reptile is known as the Wonder Gecko (Teratoscincus keyserlingii), which I finally found in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). I've been looking for these beautiful animals for nearly two years. On my most recent visit to the UAE, I was lucky enough to find it! Why is it so elusive in the UAE? This species is distributed in Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, with a small isolated population in the UAE, where it is classified nationally as Critically Endangered. Several decades of habitat destruction and fragmentation have led to the gradual disappearance of the Arabian population of T. keyserlingii. The real threat of the Arabian population facing extinction makes this encounter more special, but also a sobering reminder of how important it is to safeguard seemingly 'empty' desert habitat. The Persian wonder gecko (Teratoscincus keyserlingii) is a big, terrestrial and nocturnal gecko species. As a defense mechanism they will stand high on their legs, show their huge eyes and hiss. If this does not work and they are attacked they are able to lose their scales in the hope of a quick escape.
