One of my favorite activities when creating a character is to give them hobbies, especially when they are meaningful to me. . For my current character, Ned, I gave her two. The first I came across during researching the time period of her story: 1930s. Marbles were all the rage and kids (and adults) collected them like crazy. I started collecting them too and have a nice little stash going. Since the gang Ned runs with is called the Tin Can Gang, I keep my marbles in this oatmeal can from a company that is also period. And yes, I'm learning how to play. . The other hobby I gave her is stamp collecting. It's special because I have an old stamp album that my grandpa kept. He fought in WWII so the stamps are mostly from that era. It is eerie to see the Nazi stamps (swipe to see). There are also several loose stamps that have fallen out of the album and a few new stamps still in their stamp book. It's an amazing piece of history that I'm grateful to have. . The first half of Ned's story, "The Hooverville Happening," a historical young adult mystery, is shipping with our Spring 2019 kit. The second half ships with the summer kit, which opens for preorders on April 1st. We always give first-time buyers the option to add the first half of the story to their order so they have the entire novel to read. I can say that Ned had been my favorite character to write so far. She's spunky with a lot of heart.
