I have recently spent many hours pruning my roses and some of the plants have not survived the winter - for the second time! I have mostly grown on the relatively balmy south coast but here inland and on clay a different approach is needed. I don’t think air temperatures are a problem as I have seen “English” rose gardens in India and surviving big freezes in the UK and Scandinavia. To quote an old saying “the answer lies in the soil”. I planted into landscape fabric with the hope of keeping the weeds down but with the hot summers and low occasional winter temperatures we have been having I believe a good mulch would be more effective at protecting the roots so I am removing the fabric from beneath the plants and piling on fertiliser and mulch The losses do mean I have gaps to fill so I have taken the opportunity to go shopping online and select some new roses 😊 here are my choices… Pascali - a beautiful white which has always performed well for me even in wet weather. The neat flowers and buds are great for buttonholes. Ditto Black Baccarra a deep maroon. Those two earn their place by being resilient and useful but sadly have no scent. And so to @david_austin_roses for William and Catherine (I already have two of their lovely Claire Austin, a prolific climber which can have a hint of yellow at the centre but I think these will be a whiter white). It was a hard decision as Desdemona is listed as “best for fragrance” but William and Catherine is “best for flowering” which is important for my purposes and she does have some perfume. I already have plenty of peachy/apricot roses in the form of Sweet Juliet, Lady of Shallot and Lady Emma Hamilton but looking for more pale pinks I couldn’t choose between Wildeve and Gentle Hermione so I have ordered a few of each. So tempting to overspend so I’m stepping away from the iPad and going to prepare the way.
