A day of much needed nature time, presence, and connection 💞 Feeling truly blessed for the current people in my life, and the many new beautiful connections I have cultivated in just the past few months. This is everything I used to dream of, and a reminder that when you open yourself up to possibility, and do the required work, magic can truly happen. Behind the scenes, this has looked like saying no to the things that no longer align, setting boundaries and standing strong in them, speaking my truth even when it makes others uncomfortable, constant letting go, feeling stretched and leaning into it instead of resisting, trusting my myself more than ever before, and lots of surrender. It’s not always easy, as every next level invites us to new heights that we have never been before, but I have also noticed that with every new level comes a deeper feeling of self trust, knowing of self, and certainty that we are truly not alone. Community gardening fail. Again. Today I had every intention of cleaning out my free-range plot and planting fall vegetables. Instead I was sidetracked like I always seem to be by nature. I ended up pulling out my phone to capture a green stink bug (or spined soldier bug?) and a leaf-footed bug on a red long bean. Which is the predator and which is the prey? A few minutes later a tiny frog hopped across my strawberries and when I looked closer I saw a yellow woolybear moth caterpillar (virginian tiger moth) nearby chomping on a leaf. I've now seen two different kinds of yellow fuzzy caterpillars for the first time in less than a week! When I decided to call it a day after doing zero gardening I saw a yellow bumblebee I couldn't identify on a faded zinnia flower planted near the garden beds. I'll try again tomorrow to keep an eye on the task at hand but I may just end up enjoying nature instead. My small rewilded Atlanta yard never lets me down! This cute and dangerous dude appeared to be on a mission to find a place to pupate. I learned he's an American dagger moth and the black spikes cause a stinging sensation and rash. When young the caterpillars are bright yellow and turn pale yellow as they get older. The brown moths are 2 inches long - the largest of the dagger moths. Throughout the summer the caterpillars feed on a variety of deciduous trees including oak, willow, maple, buckeye, and redbud. In September they spin a cocoon in natural yard debris then overwinter before emerging as a moth in the spring. This is yet another reason to leave the leaves and other natural matter on the yard. Wildlife needs it to exist! This morning I am working on watercolors, weekly rhythms and shedding perfectionism. When I tell you this was not a “peaceful” project when I started. I had so much tension in my body about the way the drawings “look”…I kept erasing and re-drawing. I got up and walked away. I said countless times, “This is taking too long.” “I don’t like how this looks.” When I was younger I loved art—drawing, painting and making mixed media pieces but then that all went away. Somewhere in the tinkerings of my subconscious…I began thinking that there was a “right/good/beautiful” way to create and a “wrong/bad/mediocre” way to create art and I fell into that second category. I started giving less time to art and more time to the things that I could get an “A” on. It was during this process of mental turmoil, that made me “get it”—-the desire to quit. The need to walk away and say, “I’m not good at this anyways.” I am so grateful for these moments because I have been doing things that I am “relatively good at” for a while now and because of that I literally forgot how intense these feelings can be sometimes…even when no one is looking.
