I just love it when as well as having an entertaining read as a bonus I learn something about history that I wasn’t aware of. Rachel Margot a nurse in Sydney Australia 1968 is shocked when her grandmother reveals a family secret after she hears of Rachel’s engagement to a Greek doctor. Her whole life has been a lie and she doesn’t know who she is anymore. An opportunity comes along to meet Chiune Sugihara overseas and Rachel is determined to see him. An amazing debut, I loved Rachel’s grandmother Felka’s character and their trip to Japan where there were many Jewish traditions and a loving community. The story captured Rachel’s relationships with her family in such a moving way. What an absorbing read, I can’t wait to read more by this author in the future whose family incredibly escaped the Holocaust. Do you know about Chiune “Sempo” Sugihara? He was the Acting Consul General of Japan in Kaunas, Lithuania from 1939-1940 and he issued over 2,000 so-called “visas for life” to save Jewish refugees from the Holocaust, saving more than 6,000 lives. Sugihara received the highest honor of Israel, “Righteous Among the Nations” in 1985. On February 1, Consul General Nakai hosted an event to introduce and commemorate the legacy of Sugihara at the University of Miami (UM) Hillel, soon after the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. In this event, the film “Persona Non Grata” , released in 2015 by Director Cellin Gluck, was shown. The film depicts the story of Sugihara during his time in Manchuria through the end of the World War II and a few years past that as well. Prior to showing the film, Consul General Nakai briefly explained the achievements of Sugihara. He also talked about the widely held view that Sugihara issued visas in defiance of Japanese government directive not to do it, which the film also depicted. A fact worth noting: Contrary to the widely held view, the Japanese government at the time issued a directive to allow Japanese diplomats to issue visas in 1940! At that time, there was a strong and growing view in Tokyo that it was imperative to enhance the ties with Germany to counter the pressure from the US, but the Japanese government decided to issue visas to save Jewish refugees. Consul General Nakai introduced some other Japanese diplomats and military officers that also did their best to save as many Jewish people as possible during that time. However, Consul General Nakai stressed that Sugihara was special enough to be acknowledged as “Righteous Among the Nations”! Sugihara did indeed defy some of the government orders. Tokyo instructed diplomats to make sure that all visa applicants meet certain requirements, including financial resources during their stay in Japan before proceeding to their destination. Sugihara sometimes didn’t comply with them in order to issue as many visas as possible. He was said to issue visas even after his office in Lithuania was closed with the Soviet occupation of the country. … (Continued in comments)

It’s 1968 and Rachael Margol lives in Sydney, is a nurse and has just become engaged to a doctor. He is Greek Orthodox and she has just found out she is Jewish. Becoming engaged has finally let all the secrets out. Rachael finds out that her family has been keeping secrets from her. Her family came to Australia as refugees from the war in the early 1940’s. Their real name is Margolin and they are Jewish refugees from Warsaw. Her mother dies when she is young but her father has built a successful business and they live a comfortable life. Then comes a letter to her grandmother to say that Chiune Sugihara has been found and that they are meeting him in Japan. Rachael and her grandmother travel to Japan to meet him along with other Jewish people that he saved. This was one of the best books I have read I a long time. It is based on the true story of Chiune Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat that issued thousands of visa’s to Lithuanian and Polish Jews so they could get out of Europe and travel via Japan to other destinations. The story is fiction but is based on the authors family and their escape from Europe. If you loved The Tattooist of Auschwitz and have read Schindler’s Ark or seen the movie this is a book for you. The Japanese consul Chiune Sugihara at the Japanese consulate in Königsberg (14 Ritterstrasse), late 1941. Next to him two German soldiers, one of whom has given his helmet to Sugihara's son. A year earlier, when Sugihara still worked as a consul in Lithuania, he had begun issuing thousands of transit visas to Jews who, taken by surprise by the German occupation of neighbouring countries, were desperate to leave the country. He issued the transit visas against the express orders of his superiors, and after the war was called back to Japan, where as a result of his "insubordination" he would be passed over for promotion for the rest of his career. For his role in the rescue of some 5,000 Jews Sugihara would be awarded "Righteous among the Nations" in 1985.

😃 どうもこんにちわ。最近みなさんはいかがお過ごしでしょうか？職場などでも忙しく過ごされている方もおられるかも知れませんね。一方、世界に目を向けると大きな戦争が今、まさに現在進行中です。そうです。ウクライナとパレスチナのガザと呼ばれている場所ですね。戦争になると、色々なことが現地では起こってしまいそして、それを止めることが大変難しいです。戦争はどちらかが悪くてどちらかが良い。なんて単純なことではなく本当はすべて悪いんです。私は、そう思うんですよね。で、本当に正しい人は、ほんの一握りの人しかいないんです。1940年7月18日の早朝に起った出来事をほんの少しお話をさせてください「東洋のシンドラー」とも呼ばれた外交官 杉原千畝（すぎはらちうね）今日はこの人物について書かせて頂きます。 1940年（昭和15年）7月、ドイツ占領下のポーランドからリトアニアに逃亡してきた多くのユダヤ系難民などが、各国の領事館・大使館からビザを取得しようとしていた。当時リトアニアはソ連軍に占領されており、ソ連が各国に在リトアニア領事館・大使館の閉鎖を求めたため、ユダヤ難民たちは、まだ業務を続けていた日本領事館に名目上の行き先（オランダ領アンティルなど）への通過ビザを求めて殺到した。「忘れもしない1940年7月18日の早朝の事であった」と回想する千畝は、その手記のなかで、あの運命の日の光景をこう描いている。「6時少し前。表通りに面した領事公邸の寝室の窓際が、突然人だかりの喧しい話し声で騒がしくなり、意味の分からぬわめき声は人だかりの人数が増えるためか、次第に高く激しくなってゆく。で、私は急ぎカーテンの端の隙間から外をうかがうに、なんと、これはヨレヨレの服装をした老若男女で、いろいろの人相の人々が、ザッと100人も公邸の鉄柵に寄り掛かって、こちらに向かって何かを訴えている光景が眼に映った」 ロシア語で書かれた先の報告書にあるように、カウナスに領事館が設置された目的は、東欧の情報収集と独ソ戦争の時期の特定にあったため、難民の殺到は想定外の出来事であった。千畝は情報収集の必要上、亡命ポーランド政府の諜報機関を活用しており、「地下活動にたずさわるポーランド軍将校4名、海外の親類の援助を得て来た数家族、合計約15名」などへのビザ発給は予定していたが、それ以外のビザ発給は外務省や参謀本部の了解を得ていなかった。本省と千畝との間のビザ発給をめぐる齟齬は、間近に日独伊三国軍事同盟の締結を控えて、カウナスからの電信を重要視していない本省と、生命の危機が迫る難民たちの切迫した状況を把握していた出先の千畝による理解との温度差に由来している。 ユダヤ人迫害の惨状を熟知する千畝は、「発給対象としてはパスポート以外であっても形式に拘泥せず、彼らが提示するもののうち、領事が最適当と認めたもの」を代替案とし、さらに「ソ連横断の日数を二〇日、日本滞在三〇日、計五〇日」を算出し、「何が何でも第三国行きのビザも間に合う」だろうと情状酌量を求める請訓電報を打った。しかし本省からは、行先国の入国許可手続を完了し、旅費および本邦滞在費などの携帯金を有する者にのみに査証を発給せよとの発給条件厳守の指示が繰り返し回電されてきた。 杉原夫人が、難民たちの中にいた憔悴する子供の姿に目を留めたとき、「町のかどで、飢えて、息も絶えようとする幼な子の命のために、主にむかって両手をあげよ」という旧約聖書の預言者エレミアの『哀歌』が突然心に浮かんだ。そして、「領事の権限でビザを出すことにする。いいだろう？」という千畝の問いかけに、「あとで、私たちはどうなるか分かりませんけど、そうして上げて下さい」と同意。そこで千畝は、苦悩の末、本省の訓命に反し、「人道上、どうしても拒否できない」という理由で、受給要件を満たしていない者に対しても独断で通過査証を発給した。 日本では神戸などの市当局が困っているためこれ以上ビザを発給しないように本省が求めてきたが、「外務省から罷免されるのは避けられないと予期していましたが、自分の人道的感情と人間への愛から、1940年8月31日に列車がカウナスを出発するまでビザを書き続けました」とし、避難民たちの写真を同封したこの報告書のなかで、千畝はビザ発給の理由を説明している。 と、まだまだ続きはありますが、ここではこれまでとしておきます。 リンクを貼っておきますので気になる人は見てみてくださいね。 出典: フリー百科事典『ウィキペディア（Wikipedia）』 杉原千畝 https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%9D%89%E5%8E%9F%E5%8D%83%E7%95%9D ユダヤ人への愛のビザ発給 杉原千畝 https://www.seishobridge.com/content/detail/id=838 ユダヤ人6000人の命を独断で救った日本人（動画） https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJUGHeivjIA 杉原千畝「命のビザ」東洋のシンドラー https://www.jacar.go.j #杉原千畝 #命のビザ #Wolfgang #ChiuneSugihara
Chiune Sugihara foi um diplomata do Ministério das Relações Exteriores do Japão, nomeado cônsul na Lituânia em agosto de 1939. Anteriormente, já havia servido em Harbin, na China (onde desempenhou um papel fundamental nas negociações com a União Soviética sobre a compra de uma importante ferrovia) e em Helsinque, na Finlândia. No verão de 1940, durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, ajudou os judeus radicados na Lituânia a saírem do país, então ocupado pelas tropas nazistas, fornecendo-lhes milhares de vistos de trânsito para que pudessem viajar para o Japão. 「 places you want to visit 」 一つ前の投稿で「ホロコースト」について少し触れたので、 私の住む街にある施設を、ちょっとだけ紹介させていただきます。 福山市御幸町にある 「ホロコースト記念館」です。 50年程前、後に「聖イエス会」の牧師となる大塚 信氏がヨーロッパを旅行中に「アンネの日記」を書いたアンネ･フランクの父、オットー･フランク氏と出会いました。 その出会いから後の交流を通じて、ホロコーストによって起こった、多くの悲劇とその教訓を伝えていかなければ、という強い想いから、記念館の開設に至ったということだそうです。 館内にはアンネが日記を書き続けたと云われる、オランダのアムステルダムの隠れ部屋が再現されていたり、アンネが後に収容されたアウシュビッツ収容所の資料や精巧なジオラマ、当時収容所で命を落とした多くのユダヤ人･子供達の写真等…本当に貴重な資料が数多く展示されています。 現在日本国内で、ホロコーストに関する施設はここだけということです。 敷地内、駐車場の片隅に植樹されているのは、マロニエの樹です。 これは隠れ部屋で暮らしていた頃のアンネが、小さな窓から毎日見ていたというマロニエの樹、2011年に倒木となったその実際の樹は、その後日本に送られ、その樹から採取した種から育て上げた、正真正銘の二世の樹だそうです。 館内の展示物は全て撮影禁止なのですが、アンネの日記の書籍と、ヘブライ語の「わすれないで」のレリーフの撮影は、館長さんの許可をいただきました。 また後に「東洋のシンドラー」といわれた、第二次世界当時のリトアニア日本領事館員、杉原千畝(すぎはら･ちうね:当時の日本外務省の方針に背を向けて、ユダヤ人の亡命の為に、日本経由のビザを発給し続け、2千人以上のユダヤ人の命を救ったと云われる)に関する貴重な資料も数多く展示されています。 8月は、原爆投下の日や終戦記念日等、色々なことに触れたり、考えたりする機会もあると思います。 8月に限らず広島県内には、平和記念公園や原爆資料館、大和ミュージアムといった、戦争と平和を考えることの出来る施設が幾つかあります。 私の住む街･福山市には、多くの人に一度訪れてほしい、こんな施設があります。 #ホロコースト記念館 #HolocaustEducationCenter #福山市 #FukuyamaCity #ホロコースト #Holocaust #アンネの日記 #DiaryOfAnneFrank #アンネフランク #AnneFrank #オットーフランク #OttoFrank #大塚信 #MakotoOtsuka #杉原千畝 #ChiuneSugihara #オスカーシンドラー #OskarShindler “なぜ人間は、 お互い仲よく、 平和に暮らせないのだろう” “ Why can't people live peacefully together ” アンネ･フランク アンネの日記より

先日、関西方面に用事があった日に敦賀で途中下車。 今の時期、青春18きっぷが使えるので便利です。 福井から大阪まで特急だと2時間くらいで片道約6000円、青春18きっぷならば3時間ちょいで日帰りするならば往復2410円だからかなりお得。 その上、乗り換えは敦賀で一回だけだからだいぶ楽です。 敦賀では「人道の港 敦賀ムゼウム」を訪問しました。 敦賀港は、1920年代にはロシア革命によって孤児となったポーランドの子どもを、1940年代には杉浦千畝が発行したビザを持ったユダヤ人を受け入れた港として知られています。 時間が限られていたからここしか行けなかったけど、気になるカフェもあるしまた敦賀に寄ってみたいです◎ #fukui #tsuruga #shorttrip #chiunesugihara #青春18きっぷ #敦賀 #⚓️ #🌊
Chiune Sugihara, who died 37 years ago today, is the only Asian member of Yad Vashem's "Righteous Among the Nations." As a diplomat from Japan in Lithuania during WWII, he was able to save thousands of Polish Jews from the Nazis in 1940 by issuing them Visas that got them out of Europe (there are now 40,000 descendents of those he rescued). "Passage to Freedom: The Sugihara Story" (1997) is a children's book about Sugihara and his deeds, narrated by his son, who was only 5 at the time of his father's brave endeavor. Sugihara asked multiple times for permission to issue the Visas from the government of Japan, and each time he was forbidden -- but he did it anyway, even issuing visas on the way to the train station as he was reassigned to Germany where he could no longer help. The illustrations, which are painted-over beeswax etchings in a sepia tone, look like vintage photographs, which lends an air of realism to the book. One day I was taking a walk in downtown Los Angeles and happened upon a Sugihara statue and memorial in the Little Tokyo neighborhood. Today we honor Chiune Sugihara for saving thousands of Jewish lives during World War II. On July 29, 1940, Sugihara began issuing transit visas, which came to be known as “Visas for Life”; these visas allowed Jewish families to pass through Japan and seek refuge in other countries. In 2021, the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles, the American Jewish Committee-Los Angeles, and JACCC co-sponsored a virtual program supported by JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles, commemorating July 29 as Sugihara Visas Day, designated by the California Legislature to memorialize the great achievements of Chiune Sugihara in saving thousands of Jewish lives during World War II.
