Last night’s @cheltenhampoetryfestival slam was a little bit special. A really high calibre of poetry, a full house and a very lively audience. Unbelievably, all 3 finalists ended up with identical scores, one of those due to time penalties. Has anyone ever known that happen before?! Friday night something amazing happened - pure magic. I can never predict which gigs will make me nervous, nor why, but for some reason I was really nervous before Diversion. Was it because I got there later than I’d liked because of traffic so didn’t get to chill? Was it because it was @ledburypoetry? Was it because there were people there I knew - @derekdohren, @sarajanearbury, Bert Molsom and more? Was it because I was supporting @rosiegarlandwriter? I’m not sure. In fact I was so nervous that as I went on my lungs decided to shrink upwards and lodge themselves in my neck. It’s a good thing I kicked off with The Dealer which starts in a whisper! The nerves soon passed, as they do, and I just ended up experiencing pure joy. I had such a blast and, even if I say so myself, I think I nailed it. In fact someone I appreciate very much (that’s you Derek) said it was the best they’d seen me perform. A great part of that was down to the event itself though. The organisers run it superbly. The venue is fantastic. The open mic performers were talented, funny, moving. The audience was invested, warm, responsive, generous and I fed off their energy. I got so much love afterwards too. I sold some books (happy birthday Take It By The Line!) and people shared their personal stories with me, which is always an honour and deeply touching. Finally Rosie was amazing. She was cool and funny and quirky and oh so intelligent. Her poem about the unicorn (not a sparkly one) was incredible. She is an icon for a reason. I was so buzzed I didn’t get to sleep till gone 2am! @emmacpoetry and Dee thank you for having me. You run a truly wonderful event. I had a blast at @ledburypoetry, hosting the outdoor stage which saw a wonderful selection of gifted and entertaining musicians and poets do their thing for a sizeable and engaged audience. Got to meet some lovely people (here’s looking at you @theheyyahs, @emmacpoetry) and do a set of my own, which seemed to go down very well. I had a rather fab time yesterday performing at @2000trees_festival. Good sized audience, made some of them laugh, made some of them cry, marvellous! I also got the opportunity to enjoy @tstheidiot’s hilarious set from the side of the stage. I strongly recommend you give them a follow or see them live if you get the chance. Well, that was quite something! I've just had two amazing evenings at the @cheltenhampoetryfestival. Friday night I had the great pleasure of co-hosting the slam with my pals @osemanclive and @poetrynick. The sold out @cheltenhamplayhouse was treated to an unbelievably high calibre slam. 15 incredible poets battled to the metaphorical death with Jonathan Aylett emerging the winner, Eryn McDonald coming 2nd and John Woodall 3rd. We know how stressful (and sometimes cruel) slams can be so we made sure no poet left empty handed. Have you ever seen a slam with a lucky dip of books? Yup, we did that. Some were even vintage tomes dating back to the 1800s! Slammers, did you get lucky? Then last night I got to perform my own set, sandwiched between the touching poetry of Bert Molsom, and the vibrant work of Roy McFarlane. It was such a pleasure to meet them both! My set seemed to go down very well indeed so I am over the moon. My favourite thing is when people tell me they don’t normally particularly enjoy poetry, or wouldn’t normally go to that kind of event, but that they really enjoyed the evening. Well I got several of those, so I’m delighted! It was also such a treat seeing poetry folk I haven’t seen in ages and even meeting some I'd only ever known online - @k8jenkinson, @feaseytanya, @chris.hemingway, @derekdohren, @snellpym, @jackpascoepoet, @robertj.perry etc as well as getting to meet so many new ones. The night was topped off laughing till my face hurt watching the hilarious @johnhegleyluton. Guess who’s back, back again, Chloë’s back, tell a friend! Last night was a dream. First set since April last year so you can imagine how excited I was. I shed a tear (ok several) when I stepped out of the station at the enormity of being gigging again. Imagine me crying, stood in the middle of Cardiff’s Central Square! 😅 @themooncardiff is such a cool, accessible venue with a great stage with full lighting and sound system. @howlatthemooncardiff have built a wonderful, inclusive event that’s all about community and mutual support, and it was busy! The open micers were diverse and very talented. There was whinnying, song lyrics and abracadabra; politics, peace and mud pies. As usual my nerves were high but I was also incredibly excited and I think my set went down a storm and boy did I have fun! We all know poetry slams are flawed and we shouldn’t put too much stock in their results. Nevertheless, it feels rather awesome that, via one of these highly flawed and subjective events which could give very different results on any other day, I get to call myself the 6th best slam poet in the UK for the next year. It's going to be something I quietly remind myself of when the old imposter syndrome pops up rather than knitting myself a jumper with “6th best slam poet in the UK” emblazoned across the front. Hey PoFos, It’s about time for a little update from me. On Thursday last week it was one year since I found the lump in my breast. Please remember to #CheckYourTitsAndYourBits. My chemotherapy is done. Heartbreakingly however I lost my Mum just a few days after my penultimate chemo dose. To say that this year is hard is an understatement 💔. It meant that receiving my last chemo was really bittersweet. Whilst I was glad to have reached that point, I was heartbroken as I so wished my Mum was alive to see the day 😭. As one of my chemo drugs came with some risk of permanent hair loss, I stuck with the cold cap for the whole course. This seems to have worked as the hair I did lose (which was quite a lot) had actually already begun to regrow before the last dose. But it did leave me with a rather “special” look - very bare on top with thinned lengths everywhere else. I looked like a scary clown… As I was fairly confident that my lost hair was coming back, a few weeks ago I went and got it all shaved to a grade 1. I thought I might get upset but actually I laughed a lot as it was quite a surreal experience and at the end of the day I no longer look like someone that has something “wrong” with them. Next up is radiotherapy, starting on Thursday. I’d been told I’d get 5 doses but it’s been upped to 20. Of course I’m concerned about potential side effects, especially with that many doses, but after chemo it should be a walk in the park, right? Funnily enough, the same week I shaved my hair, I got the 3 little tattoos for the radiotherapy machine to line up to. Call that a belated rebellious phase! 🤘 So there you have it, the adventure continues. Here’s a pic of G.I. So last night I decided not to be sensible and went to Stroud to take part in the first slam they’ve hosted there in a long time which was part of the Stroud Arts Festival. After cancelling so many gigs and performances, what a joy it was to be out attending an event, let alone taking part in one. Don’t tell anyone but I might have shed a tear or two when Sara-Jane Arbury and Elvis McGonagall got the party started. It was a glorious evening with fabulous poetry (what I heard anyway - as Elvis said, when you’re waiting for your name to be drawn out of the hat, everything sounds like Albanian), talented poets and a vibrant audience. And the cherry on the cake? I only went and won the bloody thing! I’m rather tired today but my soul has been lifted and boy did I need that. My eyes are still filled with stage lights and my ears with applause. I just can’t even describe how it felt. I am delighted to announce that The Dealer has been shortlisted for the Drumshanbo Written Word Weekend. There were 80 entries from 13 countries with only 14 making the shortlist so needless to say I am once more very proud of that film.
