ALTERED STATES (1980) Say, hypothetically, that you’re sixteen and you stay over at a friend’s house. To make it interesting, this friend gives you your first ever dose of LSD. Things start off well - you discover a new Nirvana / Jesus Lizard EP. You learn a bit about yourself, and about your friends. You’re sent into the kitchen for some Tang and a fresh ashtray (this was *that* house, where kids sometimes grew donkey tails). While you’re out there, your friend tells his weird stepdad what y’all are up to, and suddenly this 500lb chain-smoking stranger is taking you by the arm to usher you into the well-worn living room. “You MUST,” he insists, “watch THIS.” He pops in a vhs of a movie about William Hurt taking too much ayahuasca or something and eventually devolving into a blood-thirsty proto-human.
