It’s been close to two years since we had the wild idea to create Swich It Up, a toy and activity exchange Ipswich & surrounding regions. We created it with hopes that families like ours could reduce their environmental and economical footprint while also reducing the stress of supporting the development of their little ones. It was our first project by Mums of May and we had no clue if there would be a market for it. Two years on its expanded to businesses, events and a playgroup. We’ve even still got some families that started with us on day one and continue to service so many new beautiful families in our communities. This feedback recently came from Donna at @thisorganisedhomelife - fellow mumma of two who has just returned to her teaching job. It’s feedback like this that fuels our soul and encourages us to keep on doing what we’re doing and planning for the future, keeping our eye on the horizon with a couple of the new projects that we have planned. The vision of How We Play is to create open ended play experiences for children in a YES space. A YES space is where children are free to explore the prepared environment as long as children don’t harm themselves, others or the environment around them. A YES space is completely child-led where children choose what to work with. Here, we trust the child that he/she knows exactly why they are drawn to a particular activity more than others. Only they know how that particular chosen activity helps them in their development. An important value of a YES space is to respect the child’s NO. As parents, we only have good intentions and often want our children to experience everything around them. However, sometimes, children don’t like to be disturbed from the activity they are deeply engaged with. You may invite your child to participate in other activities, if they say NO, we must respect it and take a step back. Child-led play gives us an amazing opportunity to observe our child closely. I can’t believe school holidays have ended! As a teacher and mother I have been loving the slow mornings and spending some quality time with my eldest (my 3 year old still goes to childcare which has been a struggle because she caught on that her brother is not going to school 😅) But I am also craving the routine and structure of school and work.
