This mother's day and beyond, we honor Reina Mei Nasino, Cora Agovida, Felicidad Caparal, Amanda Echanis, and many more human rights defenders, activists, and political prisoners who continue to revolutionize motherhood. Their stories remind us of the immense sacrifices made in the pursuit of justice and the enduring strength of the maternal bond. While these mothers may have experienced motherhood differently through the marginalization of prison walls, their unwavering commitment to liberation and their love for their families serve as a reminder that mothers are one of the strongest women. ✊🏽 Jailed on trumped-up charges, these Pinay activists and human rights defenders are not only robbed of their freedom and liberty but also the most precious moments of motherhood. Often faced with trumped-up charges, delayed and slow court trials, these Nanays (mothers) were separated from their children (or live life in prison with them) at the cost of their activism. Here are some stories of women political prisoners, their unwavering fight for justice, and the high price they pay for fighting for the causes they hold dear. Watch out for an educational discussion we are announcing tomorrow, on the realities of Filipina Political Prisoners in the Philippines, hosted by our community partner - Free Our Sisters, Free Ourselves! 🦋 For now, learn more about the stories of these Pinay political prisoners at our latest blog! In pictures 📸 Indigenous leaders and communities gathered in Brasília, Brazil 🇧🇷 last month for the Acampamento Terra Livre (Free Land Camp) to lay out their demands, including the demarcation of Indigenous land.   Environmental defenders play a huge role in protecting the planet, yet they face an ever-growing risk, with violence and threats a shared reality for communities. In last year’s Land and Environmental Defenders Report, we found that 1 in 5 murders of defenders worldwide took place in the Amazon Rainforest alone. The time for change is now. That’s why on the road to COP30 in Brazil next year, we want to start creating a space for dialogue to ensure the recognition, visibility, protection and participation of defenders and communities in decision-making at climate summits. If Brazil wants to create a legacy at COP30, then this is the time to push for transformational system change. #AllForAmazon Week 57 🌳🦜 Terrible news for the animals, #Amazonia + its population & the future of our planet 😱💔 @JBS_oficial, the world’s largest #meat producer, and Brazil’s President @LulaOficial have made a deal with #China to massively increase #Brazil’s #beef exports🤬 Greed aside, the 🫁 of our planet have many enemies: cattle ranches, logging, mines, dams & the big bad guy: #soy.80% of the world’s entire soy produce comes from #Brazil, the #US & #Argentina. 77% of global soy is fed to livestock for meat & dairy production 96% of the soy from the #Amazon is fed to cows, pigs and chickens. The numbers are terrifying. To meet the demand for livestock soy production, about 4,800 square kilometers of forests are cleared yearly. One study found that 90% of tropical deforestation is attributable to food production. In other words: meat eaters are literally eating the planet and our future. Nonetheless, soy is not our enemy. Our villain is factory farming. Overall, consumers could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 61% by adopting a plant-based diet. So, activism aside, what can we do as earthlings and citizens every day? What can each of us do to stop this eco-disaster?

Last week, DAKILA and Active Vista, in partnership with the German Embassy Manila 🇵🇭🇩🇪, held a special screening of environmental films in celebration of 🌏Earth Month last April 22, at Sine Pop. 🎬 Active Vista’s Human Rights Festival and Outreach Program Director Alex Poblete was joined by Mathias Kruse, the Embassy’s Deputy Head of Mission, and Erwin Puhawan of the Philippine Movement for Climate Justice for a talkback session. The film screening included the documentary “Delikado” by Karl Malakunas, “Forest, A Garden We Cultivate“ by Mari Correa and “Between the Rains” by Andrew Harrison, Brown and Moses Thuranira. 🎞️ Avenues such as this reinforce the significance of art as a mirror to reality. 🇩🇪Germany remains committed to implementing a holistic, sustainable and creative approach to tackling the climate crisis, and especially in amplifying the voices of communities who are particularly vulnerable to it to begin with. 💡We sincerely thank everyone who attended the screening and participated in the insightful talkback session! #EarthMonth2024 #DefendTheDefenders #DeclareClimateEmergencyNow #Dakila #ActiveVista #germanyinphl #germanyinthephilippines

JUNK THE TRUMPED-UP CHARGES AGAINST FRITZ LABIANO AND PAUL TAGLE! #DefendTheDefenders #HandsoffPaul #HandsoffFritz #HandsoffActivists #FreeAllPoliticalPrisoners #YouthFightBack

UP SMES STATEMENT ON JORY PORQUIA’S DEATH ANNIVERSARY Nine gunshots. Nine echoes of ruthless violence. Four long years have passed since that fateful day, marking the painful absence of justice for Jory and countless others who fell victim to extrajudicial killings under the Duterte administration. Jory Porquia’s legacy is one of unwavering commitment to the marginalized, evidenced by his decades-long dedication to community struggles. From surviving Martial Law in the era of Marcos Sr. to organizing overseas workers in the Middle East and China, he embodied resilience and activism. His tragic end at the hands of four armed men, while he was organizing community kitchens during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him and a stain on the pursuit of justice. As we remember Jory Porquia, let us not forget the wider context—his death is a stark reminder of the assault on environmental defenders. We, the UP Society of Management and Economics Students, stand in solidarity with the victims of these heinous crimes and their families, echoing the sentiments of families who share a similar fate. It is incumbent upon us to unite against the prevailing culture of impunity. Together, we must hold Duterte accountable before the International Criminal Court, challenging the ongoing human rights violations. The struggle for justice extends beyond Jory Porquia; it encompasses the 281 Filipino environmental defenders who have lost their lives since 2012. In a world where activism should never be equated with terrorism, where defenders should not fear the very causes they champion, the rallying cry for justice echoes: #JusticeForJoryPorquia #StopTheKillings #StopTheAttacks #ActivistsNotTerrorists #AbolishNTFELCAC #DefendTheDefenders Let Ka’ Jory’s legacy ignite the flames of resistance against oppression, and may the pursuit of justice be a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of those who fight for a better world.

📣 This labor day, let us never forget what May 1 is for— the struggle for better working conditions and liveable wage. ✊ Today, not only do we celebrate the diligent workers of our society 💪 but we also call out the marcos-duterte government who has failed to serve the backbone of our economy. Despite the insufferable rise in prices, inflation, and extreme heat, Marcos Jr. and his regime choose to push forward with the Charter Change that caters to the interest of foreign investors rather than its own people. As many of our people face the consequence of the high heat index due to the unjust emissions of the government, billionaires, and global companies, the worker's right issue is and forever will be a climate issue. Join us in Morayta as we take the streets for a LIVING WAGE, NOT CHARTER CHANGE! Last week, at the 3rd COP of the Escazú Agreement, our Latin American team made their voices heard: we must defend those who defend the environment. According to the The Escazú Agreement every actor that could be affected by decisions regarding environmental projects, must be taken into account and summoned for participating so that due consideration can be given to the observations of the public. Yet, Latin America is the most dangerous region to defend the environment, and Chile is no exception. In 2023 alone, more than 20 environmental defenders were threatened in our country. We need to protect those who are protecting our planet. #DefendtheDefenders

🌎Today on #EarthDay, WECAN is launching a new resource in the fight for environmental justice and support for women land defenders in the LAC region! The "Escazú Agreement Toolkit for Women Land Defenders and Frontline Communities" equips women to navigate their country's laws to achieve the protections of the Escazú Agreement. One of the most important things we can do to protect and defend Mother Earth is to stand up and support women land defenders globally! 🌿The Escazú Agreement in Latin America and the Caribbean, represents a landmark achievement in the pursuit of environmental justice, transparency, and sustainable development across the Latin American and Caribbean region. However, the journey to accessing these rights can be fraught with legal complexities and barriers, particularly for women who are at the forefront of defending their land and communities. These toolkits aim to support the transformative potential of this historic Agreement to build a thriving and equitable future for all, including those courageous individuals defending land and ecosystems. The toolkit was developed by the Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN) with support from the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice. 🌿Find the toolkits and more resources here or in our bio → https://www.wecaninternational.org/escazu #EscazuAhora #ClimateAction #EarthDay #EscazúAgreement #COP3Escazú #WomenLead #AcuerdoDeEscazú #EscazuNow #DefendTheDefenders #WomenLandDefenders #GrassrootLeaders #UNPFII #CEPAL #ECLAC #EnvironmentalJustice

#SaveMasungi #DefendTheDefenders #EarthDay2024

LAND DEFENDERS ALERT: Help needed for Lupang Tartaria farmers! Jarton security, Ayala-Aguinaldo, out now! Agents of the Jarton Security Agency have been causing violence on the resident-farmers of the Lupang Tartaria in Silang, Cavite. Early this week, agents erected barriers around the land cultivated by local farmer group, Samahan ng Magsasaka at Mamamayan ng Tartaria (SAMATA). Reports from KASAMA-TK stated that the violence intensified further when armed goons of Jarton torched the protest camp early this morning, and injured several individuals as they terrorized and reigned terror on the encampment of the farmers, while others sustained wounds even after running for safety. The violence perpetuated by these armed personnels did not end there as they recklessly brandished their guns to some individuals and threatened those in the community. AGHAM stands in solidarity with the farmers of Lupang Tartaria indemanding an end to this violence. The farmers of Tartaria have a right to defend their ownership to the land that they have been tilling for decades. The community is currently needing financial assistance to cover the hospital bills of the injured residents. Donations can be coursed through GCash: 09304090550 (R. L.) Under the cover of darkness, the monks were evicted. Amid the freezing temperatures of late February, they knelt, prostrated and wept before a group of Chinese police officers, their sacred red robes ablaze against the black state uniforms.  In videos captured and sent out of eastern occupied Tibet — an act that in and of itself can warrant jail time — monks and citizens pleaded to protect a life-sustaining river, to preserve their ancient monasteries and to save the tight-knit communities of Derge, in the mountainous Kham region. But by day, and by night, outside of the monasteries and inside the town centers, monks, nuns and residents were arrested one by one. In the following weeks, the list of alleged crimes would run long, but on Feb. 23 more than a thousand Tibetans were arrested for protesting.  For @wagingnv I wrote about state repression of Tibetans protesting the construction of a hydropower project. The dam, one of many to be built across occupied Tibet, will displace communities, destroy ancient monasteries, and submerge their homelands. As Tibetans face the impacts of climate change, at a faster rate than elsewhere, environmental defenders are resisting occupation, extractive industries, and displacement while living under extreme censorship and state repression. We've recently watched the recording of the "Transitional Justice Forum: Remembering the Jabidah Massacre". Hosted by the Bantayog ng mga Bayani foundation (in english, 'Monument of the Heroes') and Philippine Center for Islam and Democracy (PCID), this event gathers scholars, Bangsamoro leaders, and community members in commemoration and retelling of the Jabidah Massacre. The Jabidah Massacre represents a significant part of Philippine history and signifies the historical injustices inflicted upon the Bangsamoro people. Their ongoing oppression and marginalization is evident in the persistent lack of acknowledgment of this and many other atrocities the community has faced. As many of us further our solidarity work with Palestinian people and as we engage in the process of learning and unlearning various facets of Philippine history, it is imperative that we recognize the significant contributions, experiences, and history of Muslim communities in shaping our collective understanding of our past, present, and future. Join us in this learning journey and check out: 🔸The recording of “Transitional Justice Forum: Remembering the Jabidah Massacre” at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani Facebook page. 🔸For further resources on the research done at this event, please follow Philippine Center for Islam and Democracy on Facebook. 🔸Listen and follow along the podcast @shetalkspeace Maraming salamat to our Kapatid, @catherinecuadra, for sharing these resources with us! ✊🏽

On April 24, Liyang Network will be joining Soils of Culture (@soilofcultures ) at the Asian Aotearoa Arts Hui (@asian_aotearoa_arts_hui ) programme in Pōneke at Urban Dream Brokerage for a collective cooking workshop celebrating Earth Month! Together with the participants, we will prepare three traditional Filipino dishes featuring the four major staple crops of the Philippines: banana, rice, sugarcane, and coconut. Following the cooking session, participants will share the meal and engage in discussions about the stories behind these crops, including the challenges faced by peasants, plantation workers, Lumad (Indigenous peoples of Mindanao) communities, and environmental defenders due to militarisation, commercialisation, and climate change. The workshop aims to raise awareness of these critical issues while building connections and solidarity through shared food and conversation. Proceeds from the workshop will support the ongoing work of Liyang Network, a local to global advocacy network for environmental and human rights defenders in the struggle for land, livelihood & self-determination in Philippines. Bai Bibyaon’s life and work have left a huge mark in the resistance against the imperial theft of Indigenous lands in the Philippines and beyond. Let us honour Bai Bibyaon’s memory by educating ourselves about the Lumad struggle and supporting the fight for Indigenous rights and environmental protection. Learn more through the work of @sabokahan at sabokahan.org. We're humbled to join the movement, "Pagpadayon: Bai Bibyaon's Legacy Lives On," spearheaded by @sabokahan, as we pay homage to the indomitable spirit of Bai Bibyaon Ligkayan Bigkay. We strongly condemn the ongoing slander, red tagging, and intimidation of the Lumad people by NTF-ELCAC (National Task Force to End Local Armed Conflict). Indigenous Peoples deserve justice and self determination outside the harassment of imperial forces. Indigenous Peoples deserve their given right to care for their ancestral lands, free of colonial theft. ✊🏽 Long Live Bai Bibyaon's legacy! 🔥 [Photos and sources are from Sabokahan: Unity of Lumad Women]

#TanayYouthVoteStatement | Tanay Youth Vote stands with Masungi Georeserve The Masungi Georeserve, a biodiversity sanctuary in Tanay, Rizal, is in immediate danger of losing its reforestation effort, endangering the sustainability and ecological integrity of the area. The goal of this initiative, which is vital to the georeserve's conservation efforts, is to protect and restore the area's fragile ecosystems, which are home to a vast array of flora and fauna. Protecting the surrounding towns' safety and reducing the effects of environmental risks during typhoons and landslides, Masungi Georeserve is an essential resource for the residents of Tanay, Rizal. The Masungi Georeserve protects uncommon species that are native to our area as well as a variety of ecosystems, making it an essential haven for biodiversity. Its significance for preserving ecological balance, safeguarding watersheds, and lessening the effects of climate change cannot be overstated. #CECStatement | 🌱 Defend our Ecological Frontiers, Defend Masungi Georeserve The Center for Environmental Concerns - Philippines (CEC) is alarmed by the DENR's (Department of Environment and Natural Resources) plan to cancel the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) which was awarded to the Masungi Georeserve Foundation in 2017 by the former Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) secretary Gina Lopez. This move of the DENR may further threaten the area it covers with exploitation and degradation of its natural resources. The Masungi Georeserve Foundation was awarded the Gawad Bayani ng Kalikasan - Organizational Award in 2022 for its inspirational work in environmental conservation in the Upper Marikina Watershed as well as the bravery of its forest rangers despite attacks related to their work. They were able to protect fragile forest ecosystems from quarrying and other infrastructure projects. Amidst the climate crisis, we need to keep our remaining intact ecosystems both for nature and for human lives. We urge DENR to uphold its mandate of the conservation of the country's natural resources and support the Masungi Georeserve Foundation along with other environmental defenders doing similar work. We stand in solidarity with Masungi Georeserve in protecting the environment and upholding the rights of the people to a healthful ecology. We call on fellow environmental defenders to support all those who defend the country’s natural resources. #standwithmasungi #SaveMasungi #DefendTheDefenders Sign the petition to protect the Masungi Geopark Project: bit.ly/protectmasungi We also encourage groups to create their own statements or letters of support (share with us at [email protected]). 🌱 Defend our Ecological Frontiers, Defend Masungi Georeserve The Center for Environmental Concerns - Philippines Inc. (CEC) is alarmed by the DENR's (Department of Environment and Natural Resources) plan to cancel the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) which was awarded to the Masungi Georeserve Foundation in 2017 by the former Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) secretary Gina Lopez. We stand in solidarity with @masungigeoreserve in protecting the environment and upholding the rights of the people to a healthful ecology. We call on fellow environmental defenders to support all those who defend the country’s natural resources. #standwithmasungi #SaveMasungi #DefendTheDefenders Full video of the Gawad Bayani ng Kalikasan Awards Ceremony here: https://tinyurl.com/gbk2022 (32:47-34:41) You can also read the full statement on CEC's website: https://www.cecphils.org/%F0%9F%8C%B1-defend-our.../

@soilofcultures We are honoured to be part of the Asian Aotearoa Arts Hui @asian_aotearoa_arts_hui programme this year! Join us in Pōneke at Urban Dream Brokerage on April 24, alongside our friends from Liyang Network, @liyang_network for a collective cooking workshop celebrating Earth Month. Together with the participants, we will prepare three traditional Filipino dishes featuring the four major staple crops of the Philippines: banana, rice, sugarcane, and coconut. Following the cooking session, participants will share the meal and engage in discussions about the stories behind these crops, including the challenges faced by peasants, plantation workers, Lumad (Indigenous) communities, and environmental defenders due to militarisation, commercialisation, and climate change.

Care-Full: The following poem touches on what it means to struggle with trauma, following an experience of abduction / enforced disappearance by the Philippine government. Red-tagging and human rights violations -- including extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances -- impacts mental health. In the coming The Opened Fist (Bukas na Kamao) series, we will share writings from defenders/activists (by their own hand). Kapwa Filipinos who are fighting for justice and human rights, who live and struggle through political repression. And how this, along with the oppressive forces of neo-colonialism, appear in their mental health, in their ways of thinking, feeling, and being with others. They have caringly and courageously decided to share their stories with us, in the spirit of resistance and solidarity. We hope kapwa mental health practitioners out there would read these as lived experience narratives, and strengthen your ability to support victim-survivors of state injustice. Reach out to us if you need any support. We hope kasama and comrades would feel that you, as you are, and your continued fight for justice and liberation are loved and valued. Know that there are many of us who you can lean on. #DefendtheDefenders #SurfaceAllDesaparecidos #FreeAllPoliticalPrisoners

Late last year, I spent a few months reporting in the Philippines for an investigation coming out in the next two months. On my last day in Manila, All Souls Day, I attended a memorial for those forcibly disappeared by the state. There were a few activists I was planning to speak with for my investigation but wanted to do so when the big news organizations and their cameras had left. While I waited for them to get their b-roll and move on (the great benefit of freelancing is hanging around to see what happens) I was fortunate enough to meet and speak with several survivors of martial law as well as brothers, mothers, and cousins whose loved ones had been disappeared under every government from President Marcos Sr until today. This reporting didn’t necessarily fit within my bigger story but it was important because things do not happen in a vacuum. The repression — killings, disappearances, and bombings — we are seeing in the Philippines today is not unprecedented. Since martial law was declared in 1972, each Philippine President has leveraged the violence of the police and military to crush dissent, silence activists, and deem anyone who disagrees a terrorist. The people I spoke with had lived and experienced this state violence and bore the scars — both physical and emotional — of history. Yet, they persist. As Bonifacio Ilagan, a survivor of martial law and torture, said to me: “The best way to remember those who have fallen in the night is to continue the causes that emboldened them to forgo personal welfare, personal interest. No amount of state terrorism will be able to stop the movement.” For @altajournal @calbookclub I wrote about Bonifacio Ilagan and his sister Rizalina who was disappeared in 1977. Their story of creating people’s art under oppression ties into the great work of writer Jessica Hagedorn and her 1990 debut novel Dogeaters. #DerechosIndigenas #Resistencia #AmericaLatina #DefendTheDefenders #NoALaImpunidad #ResistenciaIndigena #Justicia
