'We always knew this day would come.' Remembering Fonzie Knitwear of Duddeston, a short lived offshoot of the seemingly eternal Fonz Leather Styles warehouse of Digbeth. In our memories of Arthur Herbert Fonzarelli, he is never out of his black leather jacket, white T shirt and denims but his wardrobe must also have included at least some knitwear. In 2014 actor Henry Winkler received an honorary OBE for his work helping dyslexic British children and dropped in at Blakesley Hall Primary, to meet staff and pupils. The award came on the back of one episode of Happy Days, in which Fonzie decided that he would go to the library, despite his reputation, delivering the line 'Everybody is allowed to read'. The short scene resulted in a boom in library registrations. However, even the Stechford school staff did not remember Winkler's presence in the Happy Days TV series, which ended a ten year run in 1984. It required the Birmingham Post's photographer to explain why Winkler kept repeating his "aaaaay"catchphrase to the children. On his way back to BHX, Winkler paid an unscheduled visit with press photographer Mike Tanner to FLS, where he advised the staff to discontinue their unlicensed use of the character's name.
