First of all, I'd like to give a shout-out to @blackheritagewalksnetwork @officialbenjaminzephaniah Hunt Emisson. Benjamin Zephaniah family, the people of Handsworth. photo by @andyxhall and to all the artists who have created artwork dedicated to Benjamin Zephaniah. It was an honour to create this mural dedicated to The poet, activist, protester, actor, writer, author, teacher, professor, and The People's Champion. As a young man, I remember his voice and his poetry telling us to stand up against the thing that where wrong and injust, and to use the force of togetherness and unity to get things done. People like Benjamin are a rare breed in this day and age when we live a world when people are desperate for likes and followers for doing the bare minimum and would sacrifice that for the things that are unjust in this world. Proff Benjamin Zephaniah. You will be missed but your art creativity and words live on as we use this mural as a place for contemplation and reflection. The mural is situated in Handsworth Park, Birmingham, on The Sons Of Rest building. The mural took approximately 10 days as I was battling with the weather and trying to do as much as I could when it wasn't raining. @macthetree59 took the L2 Arboriculture class out, for their final session on Tree Inspection, on Saturday 13th April. He hosted the class in @handsworthpark, where the Sons of Rest has recently received a new tribute mural to a prominent Birmingham figure, painted by Bunny Bread. The memorial was revealed the following day in a spectacular unveiling that was well-attended, by our Chair and many members of local friend groups and councillors and family and children and all alike – celebrating the life and legacy of one of Brum’s most iconic poets and dub musicians, artist and activist, roots and nature advocate, @officialbenjaminzephaniah The memorial unveiling came a day before his birthday – happy birthday Benjamin, may you rest in peace, and be remembered. The team thoroughly enjoyed learning how to inspect trees in a place filled with so much cultural and artistic heritage and diversity, enhancing the learning experience, and truly engaging with their environment. Permission given for breezes soft, gales rough To caress her underarms, or maybe whip. For she had the sense to know That gracious living accepts both, sometimes. And she was uprooted by neither. Instead, fallen leaves from either encounter Became the carpet on which Her visitors could walk. She was gracious once. She was beautiful once. Breathtaking. Vivacious. Oxygenated life enough to share, With lesser creatures than her. Chlorophyll-hued embroidery, iridescent in sunshine, A resplendence many came to gaze upon. For form and feature are rarely so seen, As when a Sheba, or Catherine, or maybe Victoria Of the forest . . . Disrobes just a little. She was beautiful once. But here I stand, late to the palace. Only imagining the former glories, her erstwhile stature. For she has fallen. Fallen. Disease, age or maybe spite . . . I know not why. Was she too imposing? We are delighted to share that we have received #NationalLottery funding from @tnlcommunityfund for our project! Saheli Hub will use this grant to facilitate new social and support networks for ethnically diverse women through fun activities, social clubs and peer support opportunities at our Calthorpe Wellbeing Hub & Alum Rock Community Centre (ARCC), which will be delivered in a person-centred and culturally sensitive way. Further, Saheli Hub will organise a celebration event at each site to “illustrate amazing talents within themselves and neighbours”, such as our popular TRY-ATHON! event. Additionally, Saheli Hub will focus on improving social connections and reducing isolation amongst the communities in which we deliver, improve health and wellbeing, especially mental health, self-care and overall happiness and encourage all participants and the Saheli Hub team to feel more connected to their own community with a greater sense of purpose and belonging. Did you know we offer an over 50’s Health and Social Club at Weoley Castle Library? This program, funded through NNS Northfield and Heart of England, is open to all participants over the age of 50 who live local to the Weoley Castle area. What do we do? Set within the cosy and warm Weoley Castle Library, participants start their session off with a general knowledge quiz and a cup of tea, followed by social time to chat with other participants, board games, and a seated yoga session with Tony, a trained and experienced instructor. We also regularly invite guest speakers to come and talk to the participants about various health-related topics of interest. It is a time to exercise your brain and body, have lots of laughs and hopefully make some lasting friendships at the same time! This FREE program has been running for 18 months and aims to reduce loneliness and isolation, improve physical and mental health and to increase physical activity levels. Tracey, from the Birmingham City Council (BCC) noticed a need in this community and following the success of our NNS Yardley Social Club held at Yardley Library, reached out to Saheli Hub to create this space for the local residents of Weoley Castle to participate in. This wonderful group has grown week by week and we hope to continue to do so in the future. Meet the team: Usman Usman began his work with Saheli Hub in 2021 as senior men’s and health club coordinator. “I choose to work for Saheli Hub because me and the organisation have similar values around inequalities, inactivity and providing opportunities for those from deprived backgrounds. We are both also very passionate about designing the future for our communities with big partners such as NGB’S, the NHS and others that make the big decisions that affect our communities. I want to up skill more people in the communities I work in so that they can then support and develop other members. I also want to engage even more people aged 50+ and those under 50 with additional needs as these are target audiences that are quite often ignored and forgotten about. Sheila at the age of 75 yrs, has been coming to the Saheli Hub arts & crafts sessions every Wednesday for over 4 years! Sheila went to see her GP about her ongoing health concerns and was referred to Saheli Hub after she mentioned her feelings of loneliness “I was fed up living on my own.” Her GP recommended joining our Saheli Hub sessions so she could socialise and learn a new skill at the same time. “One word I would use to describe Saheli Hub is ‘BRILLIANT’. They have nice people. I can’t do crochet. I learned with Saheli Hub but I forget as soon as the instructor walks away. So, I do arts and crafts. I never used to do arts and crafts in my life but since I have been here, I have started to make these creatures. Giraffes, Pandas, ladybirds, a fish mobile, and now I am making a penguin family. I use all sorts of craft items such as cotton wool, toilet rolls, and glue. I have a hard time with faces but I am working on it. Meet the team: Shaafia Shaafia is a Senior Cycling Coordinator and Social Media Lead at Saheli Hub and has been a cycling Instructor for over 12 years. In addition, Shaafia also has a background in Children’s Services and Sports Development. Shaafia started teaching Bikeability across schools in Birmingham, however, soon realised she wanted to encourage more women to cycle. “Since joining Saheli Hub we have worked together to teach thousands of women to cycle. Our aim is to empower women to take up cycling for social, recreational, or commuting purposes whilst supporting their emotional, mental, and physical wellbeing along the way. Meet the Team: Shaila Shaila is a cycling instructor & ride leader, lifestyle coach with the diabetes prevention team, walk leader, and sound bath instructor. Shaila began her Saheli Hub journey as a volunteer in 2016 and then went on to become a freelance ride leader & cycling instructor from 2017. Shaila has since been working with Saheli Hub in her current role since June 2022. “I love my job, it doesn’t feel like work most days. I work alongside an incredible team that facilitate my growth. I have been exposed to so many opportunities whilst working with Saheli. I enjoy affecting change in my community from working on a grassroots level to building infrastructures from scratch, helping to identify and train local people from the areas to pass on the baton and sourcing funding through networking, to name but a few. The organisation encourages personal and professional development and provides a safe space that nurtures the wellbeing of its staff whilst providing a flexible approach to work. My future personal and community goals are to play an active part in reversing health-related illness. To help grow the cycling offer across the city one area at a time and to ensure it is sustainable. I also want to offer sound baths to the local community through Saheli. Saheli is in an interesting place, it’s a crucible of ideas and change and is growing which is exciting and challenging in equal measure for me. “I started coming to Saheli Hub last year. I love this class. It makes me very happy being here. I was looking on the internet for a class like this and my niece found this crochet class in Handsworth. I enjoy it very much. It’s a new skill to learn. It’s nice to meet other people as well. Ambreen [Saheli Hub crochet and knitting instructor] is like a daughter to me. She is so nice. She is very patient. And the way she explains everything is so good. You can ask her the same question a 100 times and she will still explain. WORLD DIABETES DAY! The theme for World Diabetes Day 2023 is “Access to diabetes care”. The theme focuses on the importance of having equal access to diabetes health care and also having the right information about the condition. At Saheli Hub, this theme aligns with the foundation of our CAPD (culturally appropriate prevention of diabetes) program which focuses on providing holistic support (via our trained staff) to participants that have been referred from their GP’s as pre-diabetic. We believe diabetes care should be accessible to all and prevention through culturally appropriate education and support is paramount to achieving this. We have created a program that combines education, training and physical activity in partnership with Birmingham and Solihull NHS Health Inequalities Team, Washwood Heath PCN and Gate, Alpha, and Iridium Medical Practices to provide holistic service delivery to reduce the risk of more patients becoming diabetic. A most recent assessment conducted in October 2023 has shown that uptake from participants referred into our CAPD program is much higher than that of the national average. Just a few clips of our family community sports day at Handsworth Cricket Club on Friday 😍 We were so blessed with the weather staying dry 🙏 and we had fun, fun, fun!!!! The children, young people and their families all got to take part in different sports activities including football, cricket, athletics, boxing, kickboxing, a self-defence workshop and hockey taster and the highlight of the day for most was the 'BSN Hardest Hitta' boxing machine! After being taught the right moves and the right techniques by our 6 x world champion kickboxer and boxing champion Waine Turner, everyone could then test their newfound skills! Our hardest hitters got £50 prize money 💰 With a top score of 821 in the over 16s and 634 in the under 16s 🥳🎉🥳🎉🥳 Here are just a few of our hitters demonstrating their talent! We are pleased to say we will also be supporting some of the young people moving forward into a boxing gym to receive further boxing lessons 👏🏼👏🏼 A huge success!!! An update from our CEO and Founder @naseemsaheli “Yesterday I attended the Active Travel Ambition: West Midlands Cycling and Walking Conference and delivered a speech about the work of Saheli Hub, our history and how we engage women into walking, running and especially cycling. I was able to express why our model is so successful through our delivery in three parks and the manner in which we have grown our own instructors and team. Saheli Hub works with some of the most isolated women that live in the poorest communities in the West Midlands and in 2020, Saheli Hub conducted a survey during COVID-19 to find out about the needs of these communities. During Lockdown, one major finding of this survey was that these women wished they had taken the opportunity to learn how to ride a bike prior to the restrictions so that they could have had the freedom to ride their bike to stay active safely. Now restrictions have lifted, our cycling sessions are the most popular for which we have extensive waiting lists at our three different locations. Saheli Hub has, to date, taught well over 3,000 women to ride bikes in parks and in neighbouring streets. However, there has been an expressed desire by our participants to explore more and we have taken women further afield, riding bikes along challenging trails in numerous sites around the country. We urge you to understand that if we are really wanting to see change, funders need to support grassroots organisations who can deliver directly to those communities in most need. In short, we firmly believe cycling should be free and available to all. Thank You to Adam Tranter for giving me the opportunity to speak at the conference and great to be able to spend time in the company of Chris Boardman, Danny Williams and Isabelle Clement. I look forward to seeing the future vision for West Midlands and Active Travel, especially for women.”
Saheli Hub is dedicated to improving community health and wellbeing. One avenue in which we strive to do this is through education to ensure participants are making positive lifestyle changes. In doing so, Saheli Hub has found that participants take this knowledge and pass it on to family members, thus making not only life-long but also generational changes towards healthier living. One way in which we educate our participants is through art. Education through art is a language of its own. It promotes expression, connection and most of all, a visual way of learning. Visual learning helps tackle language and cultural barriers that may arise with our participants. Julian Scriven, Managing Director of Brompton Bicycle, visited Saheli Hub this Monday as Brompton Bicycle have donated 50 Brompton bikes to Saheli Hub. The goal is to provide opportunities for women from ethnically-diverse communities that have limited access to bikes on a daily basis to continue their health and lifestyle journey. 15 of these 50 donated bikes have gone to the Saheli Hub cycling team to support cycling delivery in the community and the remaining 35 bikes will be for long-term loans out in the community in which Saheli Hub works. These community bike loans are specifically for women who have been taught how to ride a bike by the Saheli Hub Cycling Club and these participants reside in some of the most deprived areas of Birmingham. The primary reason for this allocation was to ensure that women do not have to wait for a weekly session at Saheli Hub and can ride their Brompton Bikes every day, thus re-enforcing our mission to get more women on bikes. Saheli Hub encourages all those attending sessions with them to make active life changes and to integrate these new cycling skills and lifestyle choices into their every-day life. We believe that having free access to learn how to ride a bike is paramount to achieving this goal. “Saheli Hub is very grateful for the generosity, partnership and support that Julian and the Brompton Bicycle team have shown us. Saheli Hub is absolutely delighted to announce that we have been awarded a £75K grant from #HS2! We will be using our £75K #HS2 grant as a three-year investment from HS2 which will enable us to sustain and grow our new services for men, building on a pilot that was developed during the pandemic. To further develop the programme, we will continue to employ a male officer who will deliver regular sessions in community settings such as parks, libraries and community centres, organising weekly social clubs, moderate exercise sessions and seated cycling and Sähëlï’s signature cycling sessions around Ward End Park. This funding will enable us to grow the project over the next three years by sustaining existing activity and growing to meet demand beyond the pilot projects target demographic of 50+ males, to support younger men also. The project will run from October 2023 to March 2026.
