Charles Lloyd & Chico Hamilton - A Different Journey (196?, Reprise Records). Happy 86th Birthday to @charleslloydsax! I could have posted any number of his records today, as he’s been steadily becoming one of my favorite players and composers. This is my most recent addition: a rare Japanese pressing of an album he cut with Chico Hamilton, which was originally released and credited to the Chico Hamilton Quintet. But I guess for this Japanese release, the label decided to accredit it to Charles. I think that was the right call, given that he wrote every song on the album (they also gave it a way better cover, peep that typography). Another decision I appreciate is the restructuring of the tracklist. Charles’s lush flute playing on the title track is a much more inviting and gentle introduction to the proceedings than the original opener “Sun Yen Sen” (now track A2). The bright, sunny melody swings from a delicate mood to playfully funk in that signature Charles Lloyd way. The track also features soloing from Gabor Szabo and the illustrious trombonist George Bohanon. The two men, along with bassist Albert Stinson, would collaborate with both Charles and Chico all throughout the 60s and 70s. Tracks like the aforementioned “Sun Yen Sen” and “One Sheridan Square” are instantly memorable toe tappers, with both songs benefiting massively from Szabo’s quick changes and uniquely bendy-resonant phrasings. Albert Stinson also gets some wonderful moments to shine on that track, as well as on closer “Island Blues”, where his playing absolutely dominates the track. Chico Hamilton is, of course, an absolutely beast behind the drums the entire time, handling each song with both flare and deft precision. The band, as a unit, is totally without flaw, but I have to give special consideration to Charles for writing such a bevy of strongly emotional and thematic tunes. His catalogue is such a rich one to explore, always unveiling new sides to the man. I wish him the happiest of birthdays! Also, definitely check out his new album “The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow”, which dropped today!

Donald Byrd - Places and Spaces (1975) Irresistible music, turning up some heat on a cold and snowy Sunday night. Funky, suave, and hypnotic, but with enough edge and complexity to keep the listener engaged. My favorite of #DonaldByrd's collaborations with the supremely talented #MizellBrothers, but I had procrastinated picking up an original copy. Came across this less-than-glorious cover housing a minty record on a recent trip to DC and decided it should come back to Jersey with me. Very glad I finally got it on the turntable, it sounds HEAVY--the big punchy bass was a welcome surprise. I don't think people care much about the narrative around Byrd's work with the Mizell brothers (serious jazz musician goes mainstream) anymore, but just in case you've been wary: check this out. There's a lot more happening here than you might expect, both in Byrd's fluid and spry playing and in the arrangements. Now playing in stereo, 1974 (OG Pitman pressing). : The year was 1974 - I was the bun in my mom’s oven and this album was being mixed and mastered the month I was born and released in time for my first Christmas. And the album screams 1974! It’s full of jazzy funk vibes with some soul sauce generously sprinkled on top and occasional disco beats and flares. Gas shortages, Tricky Dick Nixon & Watergate, record inflation were in full swing, but this album was made of the best of 1974 and it got Hawes back on the radio. David Alelrod knew what needed to be done in order to make that happen and successfully did it on this recording. Also of note, this is one of the few credited and featured appearances of longtime session musician and Wrecking Crew veteran Carol Kaye. That alone is worth the price of this record. But not only that, her husband, Spider Webb, plays the drums on this wonderful set. Don’t pass this up if you see a copy, I’m so glad I snagged this NM copy @therecordexchange for a great price. Drummer Myrick, who really doesn't have much else to his name, leads a small crew of Detroit musicians at a University of Michigan gig, including pianist #KennyCox who would later form the Contemporary Jazz Quintet, and trombonist #GeorgeBohanon, the most prolific of the group in the jazz industry. ナベサダこと、渡辺貞夫御大の1978年作。 まあまあレアらしい、アメリカ・プレス盤。 ナベサダ・ヴァージンだったワタクシの2度めの秘め事はこの盤。 んー、ブナンである。 いわゆる、ナベサダさんのイメージ、ドンピシャ。 なんでも、100万枚も売り上げたとか。 すごいっすね。 チャック・レイニー、ハーヴィ・メイスン、ジョージ・ボハノン、アーニー・ワッツなど、西海岸ロック系のアルバムでもお馴染みの面々。 そして、リー・リトナーなんて表記すると、バラカンさんが黙っちゃいない、リー・リッナワ。 偉大なギタリストとは知りつつも、真剣に聴いたことがなかったんですが、意外と気骨のあるプレイをするんですね。 ちょっと印象が変わりました。 リッナワ、メスィーニー、カールトン、ベンスン。 このあたり、ワタクシ、ひと皮むけばギタリストのくせに、大変弱い領域です。 改めて総括してみると、自分の得意領域、弱い領域が「見える化」されます。 得意領域を掘り下げるか、不得意領域に踏み込むかは自分次第。 おっと、カリフォルニア・シャワーの話でした。 聴き込みが足りないと、書くことないに決まってます😆 そんなわけで、このアルバムは、同時代的に聴いてみたかった気もしますが、「アルバム聴くのに遅すぎるってことはないぜ」と自分を奮い立たせて、中年は前に進むのであった。 適した時間帯：夏の朝 聴くシチュエーション：天気の良い日に外で（通り雨注意⚠️） Excellent album ★★★★★ I already had a few albums by Sadao Watanabe this is an excellent addition.
