This year we celebrated my 25th Birthday with the patients and staff at West Penn Hospital on T7. Celebrating the Team that made it possible for me to continue to celebrate the many years to come. With the help of my Mom and several friends and family that donated to the Second Annual: Bag-O-Hope. we where able to make 23 bags filled with anything a patient could need during there time in the Hospital. As well as we made homemade pulled pork and brisket in the Smoker (shout out My Mom for the cooking skills.) with sides and treats for the whole staff at on the floor. Between the hugs and tears shared between me and the nurses we can definitely say this year was a success! Thankyou too all that helped and were interested in this journey! Meet Erin! She is one of our AMAZING Physical Therapists who has been with @huntsmancancerinstitute for 6 years. Erin is imbedded into our Bone Marrow Transplant physician clinic. She works alongside her patient’s oncology team to ensure pre and post transplant their PT needs are met. Erin is working with people who primarily have lymphoma or leukemia. She helps educate and prepare her patients for transplant and then afterwards focuses on helping people return to a life they love. This includes getting stronger, increasing functional capacity, energy conservation techniques and any other individualized goals. Erin’s role is unique and absolutely essential. Did you know that forty percent of all childhood cancers are blood cancers? Along with that, 80% of childhood cancer survivors have chronic health issues as a result of treatment. We need safer, less toxic and more effective treatment for kids with blood cancers. Meet our third Honored Hero, Ike! 🤍… Ike Hudson is a 13 year old young man who attends Brock Junior High, near Weatherford, TX. If you ask any of his extended family, they will all say that Ike is “the cousin who can be fully trusted.” He has always been respectful and happy to follow the rules. He saved his parents from having to baby proof the house or build a fence around the pool because if you told him not to go to the pool without a grown up, he didn’t! All those who know him say, “He is a great kid!” Ike has always been fascinated with machines and vehicles. He’s been driving some type of vehicle since he was a toddler and hopes to get his pilot's license before his driver’s license. He was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia after he noticed some cyst-type lumps on his scalp in February of 2022. He suffered an elbow injury pitching for his baseball team and when he went in for an MRI, his mother requested a scan to check out his head and neck. The diagnosis came May 9, 2022, the day after Mother’s Day. His parents and pediatrician were fully expecting to hear that Ike had Cat Scratch Fever, but that was not the case. Ike is fortunate to be considered Low Risk for his B-Cell ALL and is on the St. Jude Total 17 Protocol. After almost one year, he and his family are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. In the fall of his 8th grade year, Ike will have his last chemo via infusion, and the last year of treatment will consist of oral chemotherapy every day until the fall of his Freshman year of high school. Meet our adult Honored Hero, Chelsea! 🤍 (and her precious miracle baby, Ollie Jean!) We are thrilled to honor her and share her story. "After 2 years of infertility and lots of medical intervention, my husband and I got the highly anticipated positive pregnancy test we had prayed for. But right around the time that positive showed up, I was also greeted with a golf ball size lump on my neck. I was misdiagnosed for several months until we found out in February 2020 that I had stage 2Bulky Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I began chemotherapy when I was 20 weeks pregnant, did 8 rounds and then was induced a couple of weeks early to deliver our precious, miracle girl. I then finished the remaining 4 rounds of chemo after Ollie Jean’s birth. I achieved remission but found out the cancer had returned at my 1 year scan. I did four more rounds of chemotherapy to attack the cancer while waiting to switch insurances and then underwent an autologous stem cell transplant. I was in the hospital 21 days for the stem cell transplant and retrieved remission. The doctors prescribed a year’s worth of “maintenance” chemo/immunotherapy after I was somewhat recovered from the transplant and have been doing that every 3 weeks since.
