Strutting. Peacocks symbolize power, strength, confidence, and in some cultures, divinity. Technically, the males are called peacocks while the females are called peahens. Together , they are known as peafowls. Originally from India, the Phoenicians took the peafowl to what is now known as Syria and Egypt around 3,000 years ago. #NationalZoo #PBS #nationalgeographic #peacocks #peafowl

Short, thin, gray-black to brown-black hair covers the entire body except the face. Western lowland gorillas may have a more brownish coloration. A small white tuft of hair on their rump distinguishes infants up to four years old. The white patch helps the mother keep track of the infant and assists other group members in identifying the gorilla as an infant. — Mature silverback males have a saddle of white hair across the small of their backs. In western lowland gorillas, the silver may extend to rump and thighs. Western lowland females may go gray below the ears and on the neck and top of the head as they age. Compared to other subspecies, western lowland gorillas have a more pronounced brow ridge and ears that appear small in relation to their heads. They also have a differently shaped nose and lip than other subspecies. — Adult male gorillas' heads look conical due to the large bony crests on the top and back of the skull. These crests anchor the massive muscles used to support and operate their large jaws and teeth. Adult female gorillas also have these crests, but they are much less pronounced. — In comparison to the mountain gorilla, the western lowland gorilla has a wider and larger skull, and their big toe is spread apart more from the alignment of the other four toes. Gorillas' arms are longer than their legs; when they move on all fours, they knuckle-walk, supporting their weight on the third and fourth digits of their curled hands. Like other primates, each individual has distinctive fingerprints. Gorillas also have unique nose prints.” (Images in series taken with EOS today in DC…)

It is the only member of the genus Deroptyus. — It is found in Brazil, Suriname, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, areas of northeast Peru, Venezuela, French Guiana and Guyana. — The red-fan parrot was formally described in 1758 by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in the tenth edition of his Systema Naturae. He placed it with all the other parrots in the genus Psittacus and coined the binomial name Psittacus accipitrinus. Linnaeus based his description on the "hawk-headed parrot" that had been described and illustrated in 1751 by the English naturalist George Edwards in the fourth volume of his A Natural History of Uncommon Birds. Linnaeus mistakenly specified the type locality as India. It was redesignated as Cayenne in French Guiana by Carl Hellmayr in 1905. The red-fan parrot is now the only species placed in the genus Deroptyus that was introduced in 1832 by the German naturalist Johann Wagler. The genus name combines the Ancient Greek derē meaning "neck" with ptuon meaning "fan". The specific epithet accipitrinus is from Latin and means "hawk-like".” (Images in series taken with EOS today in DC…)

You'll find mallard ducks near ponds, marshes, streams, and lakes, where they feed on plants, invertebrates, fish, and insects. Mallards are dabbling, or surface-feeding, ducks because they eat by tipping underwater for food—head down, feet and tail in the air—rather than diving. Mallards also forage and graze for food on land. — The male mallard duck, called a drake, sports a glossy green head, a white ring around its neck and a rich, chestnut-brown breast. The mottled brown female mallard looks downright dull next to the male's showy feathers. — The mallard duck's outer feathers are waterproof, thanks to oil that’s secreted from a gland near the tail. Beneath this tightly packed waterproof layer of feathers lies a soft, warm layer of feathers called down. Twice a year, mallards molt, or shed, their flight feathers, temporarily grounding the birds for several weeks until the feathers grow back. — Mallards fly in groups called flocks. Like most migratory birds, mallards fly in the famous V formation. During winter migration, mallards fly south in search of warm weather, often resting at the same spots year after year. Migrating mallards can travel great distances, relying on rivers, coasts, and valleys to find their way. — A female mallard lays up to a dozen eggs in nests on the ground near water, often in a small depression or tree hole. She lines the nest with warm down plucked from her undercoat. Soon after birth, baby ducks, called ducklings, open their eyes. A little more than a day after hatching, ducklings can run, swim, and forage for food on their own. They stay in the nest for less than a month. A group of ducklings is called a brood. Outside the nest, the brood sticks close by the mother for safety, often following behind her in a neat, single-file line.” (Images in series taken with EOS today in DC…) @rlwegner47

We had a wonderful day at the @nationalzoo today, celebrating my niece’s 3rd birthday 🎈 Capturing this beautiful moment between a new baby zebra and its mother was amazing. Notice there’s no midwife standing there grabbing the babies head and shoving it onto her nipple or standing over her telling the mother that she’s doing it all wrong and she should give it a bottle of formula or she shouldn’t be feeding her baby so often and should let it cry itself to asleep because she is creating a rod for her own back. The zoo was full of people and not one person told this mother she shouldn’t be feeding her baby in public and to go hide in a bathroom, instead all saying how beautiful this moment was. Why we don’t see a moment like this between a human mother and baby just as beautiful instead of placing so much fear, doubt and shame onto our new mothers, I just don’t understand 🩷 #nationalzoo #babyzebra #breastfeeding #breastfeedingmama #cbrzoo #canberra #asnatureintended #motherandbaby #letstreatwomenwithkindness #biologicallynormal

In January, @oliviacantalupo and I departed Hanover, PA to begin our great journey to the American Southeast. Our first stop on this journey was McLean, VA- a suburb of Washington DC. 3 months and 7 states later, we end this trip where it started- at the Capitol of this great nation.  Washington, the District of Columbia, was made the nation's capitol as a compromise to appease the northern and southern states. It sits between Virginia and Maryland but does not belong to any state. Instead it is a district- the only in the US. It does not have senators or representatives in Congress but it does have electors in the electoral college. It exists at the end of the New-Boston-DC Megapolis and the beginning of the Southeast Atlantic Coast. Today the District of Columbia is an icon in and of itself. It is home to the Capitol Building, the White House, the Washington and Jefferson Monuments, and so many other important places. The Smithsonian Institute runs many institutions around D.C., providing free entry to those seeking knowledge. Olivia and I visited the National Zoo, Botanical Gardens, Arboretum, and Museum of the American Indian. We also saw a Washington Nationals Baseball Game. It is the peak of spring right now. The flowers are blooming and the weather is warming. We have functionally been chasing spring this entire trip, but it is good to see life spreading north once more. The end of one journey is the beginning of another. We may be back in the Northeast, but not for long... #travel #washingtondc #capitol #usa #unitedstates #flowers #botanicalgardens #arboretum #nationalarboretum #smithsonian #nationalmall #washingtonmonument #capitolbuilding #museumoftheamericanindian #nationalzoo

Since the term Perissodactyl was mentioned with Joona, it makes sense to dive into the science behind it. The order Perissodactyla, is comprised of a group that is made up based on Odd-toed Ungulates. They will have one, three or five digits depending on the family, with the middle digit being larger than the rest. They have evolved to reduce the weight-bearing toes, and digest their food through the intestines without having chambered stomachs. The group consists of only three members: Equids (Horses and Wild Asses), Tapirs and Rhinoceros - Equids would've been one genus that no one would ever link a Rhinoceros to. Members apart of the subgenus, Asinus, are the most common form of wild equids. This encompasses several subspecies of wild and domestic Donkey, and even including Zebras (such as Yipes). Although, it's different with Horses - The Przewalski's Horse is the last and only true wild horse, with the rest becoming widespread domestication by 3000 BCE. This was after the conclusion that horses such as the American Mustang and Australian Brumby were only feral descendants of their domestic ancestors, rather than truly wild. There were indications of domestication in the Botai Culture, but moreso that the Botai Horses are from a seperate wild population rather than diverging from Przewalski's Horse - #przewalskihorse #takhi #mongolianwildhorse #dzungarianhorse #equusferusprzewalskii #equusprzewalskii #horse #wildhorse #equid #hoofstock #ungulate #herbivore #animal #mongolian #endangered #wildlife #zoology #wildlifeconservation #wildlifephotography #nature #zoophotography #biology #smithsoniannationalzoologicalpark #smithsoniansnationalzooandconservationbiologyinstitute #nationalzoo #smallmammalhouse #conservation #cloning #planetzoo

We interrupt your feed with this little mammal, since today is #InternationalPallassCatDay! These elusive wild cats are known to be one of the most widespread of its species. Ranging throughout Central Asia, they will reside in rock crevices, caves and even marmot burrows. These make the Pallas's Cat an effective predator, with its diet including rodents, passerine birds, and small reptiles. They're also recognized as the grumpiest cat in the wild due to their stern expression - While having a huge range filled with benefits, it also has drawbacks. Due to its widespread range and assumed large population, the Pallas's Cat has been listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List since 2020. Some population units are threatened by poaching, prey base decline due to rodent control programs, and habitat fragmentation as a result of mining and infrastructure projects - Despite its current status, and hidden appearance, many regulations and laws have been passed to protect the Pallas's Cat throughout countries in Central Asia. Recent studies from collared cats have shown a steadily increase through Russia and Mongolia by 13%. Conservation organizations such as PICA and PCWG work together with local communities in Mongolia and Russia, along with AZA Zoos throughout Europe to better understand their natural behaviors and environment - #pallasscat #manul #otocolobusmanul #wildcat #feline #mammal #animal #nature #wildlife #wildlifeconservation #wildlifephotography #conservation #elusive #cat #smithsoniansnationalzooandconservationbiologyinstitute #smithsoniannationalzoologicalpark #nationalzoo #clawsandpawspathway

The Hartmann's Mountain Zebra is the smallest subspecies of Zebra, weighing between 450-820lbs, and 4-5ft when standing. Despite the stature of Yipes here, he's well equipped for defense. As a member of the Asinus (Wild Ass) family, a strike from his hooves could severely cripple or even kill predators such as Lions and Cheetahs. Not only that, but during the breeding season, stallions will bite their opponent with powerful jaws for the opportunity to mate with mares. This would make Yipes a formidable meal, rather than easy fast-food - You may notice some brown hints around his muzzle, going down to his abdomen. However, the real pigmentation remain at the beginning of the stripes on the face. Yipes' favorite past time is engaging in dust bathing - This is also an instinctual behavior his wild counterparts exhibit as well, where they create a depression in the dirt. Hartmann's Mountain Zebras will roll in these pits to help remove harmful insects that try to attack the skin.
