Trust the Science Act (HR764), which threatens to remove Endangered Species Act (ESA) protections for gray wolves, has passed the House. ADI and 102 other organizations have signed onto a letter opposing the bill, which directs the Secretary of Interior to reissue the final rule to delist gray wolves in 44 states within 60 days of enactment. The bill also bars judicial review of the delisting. The rule that HR764 seeks to reinstate was challenged by conservation organizations and overturned by a federal district court in February 2022. The gray wolf is an iconic keystone species that is critical to the health of America’s ecosystems. Just another #SavetheRhinoDay reminder that rhino horns have no medicinal properties or value that is worth poaching them to extinction. Rhino horn is comprised of the same stuff that our hair and fingernails are made of (called keratin). All of this grows back over time, so there should be no reason to poach rhinos just for the entire horn. A leading matriarch has a huge responsibility when it comes to the survival of a herd. With little ones constantly running around, it helps having extra sets of watchful eyes on the Savanna to scope out possible threats. Ndula, along with the subadult Elephants, play that role effectively for five year old Kaia and Zuli. When startled, her and the rest of the group will form a protective circle with the calves inside. Predators will think twice before getting past the mass and elongated tusks of an agitated mammal - When Swazi isn't around, Ndula remains in charge. She may not be as large, but her height gives her meaning in the social hierarchy. Although it appears that she has one tusk, there's a second one hidden. Instead of protruding outwards, Ndulas right tusk curves under her trunk rather than over. Its unsure as to why it's specifically that way, but it's a natural growth that happens to wild Elephants as well. This is a prime example of the process of evolution and species variation. Both subjects are mammals, both are antelopes, both are even lechwe, and both are the male versions of their respective species. On the left is the male Nile Lechwe. They are an endangered species found in the South Sudan and even in Ethiopia. The red antelope on the right is a Red Lechwe and is found in a wider range of African countries and locales, such as Botswana, Zambia, and other places like the Okavango Delta and Kafue Flats. They are a near threatened species, though they aren’t doing as poorly as the Nile Lechwe. Both species prefer swampy or flooded grasslands, and the males grow to stand out to the females. This was a beautiful moment where the two approached each other and crossed horns for a brief period before separating and wandering off on their own. While both occupy similar niches and environments, we can see how each species differs in their attempts to stand out to potential mates to pass one their genes. The Red Lechwe has beautiful black patterning on their forelegs and part of their chests, whereas the Nile Lechwe takes it to the extreme with their blackened shaggy coat and bright white patch on the backs of their muscular necks. Elephant herds are a female dominated group, with the exception of male calves before they mature. Comprised of family relatives, these enormous mammals are led by the largest, oldest, and most experienced known as the Matriarch. Their keen intelligence allows them to retrace migration patterns, establish a strong defense against predators, and monitor the attitude of calves and elders of the herd. This teaches them proper social cues and mannerisms to prevent being reprimanded in Elephant society - Since there's been a brief introduction for Umngani, might as well get to know the entire family that inhabits the Elephant Valley - This is Swazi, who's been the matriarchal foundation ever since she arrived at the Safari Park. Her name is derived from Swaziland, which has now been changed to Eswatini in South Africa. There had been an overpopulation of African Elephants in the early 2000s, with long periods of drought plaguing the small country. As a result to preserve resources for the local people, indivuals would've been culled, causing an outrage towards media and conservationists - Six out of twelve Elephants had been securely shipped to Southern California, escaping such a grim fate. “It’s raining and flooding in some places in Kenya right now. This has taken my mind back to a bittersweet moment that happened last year. In the month of November, 2023, we lost a southern white rhino who was selected to be a part of the northern white rhino recovery program. Her death, plus that of another rhino, is credited to a clostridium poisoning that came with the heavy rains at @olpejeta A month and a half before, an embryo transplant was done on her to affirm that subspecies of rhinos can act as surrogates. It was a mix of joy and sadness when we found out she successfully took up the embryo and was pregnant. This proved the effort could work. A team from @biorescue_project brought a 3D replica of the embryo to the conservancy, held by @kangethe.florence and myself in the photos. This Baird's Tapir is Luna, and although her physical appearance mislabels her as a Suidae (Pigs and Peccarys), the odd toes on on the hind foot set Luna next to the Greater One-horned Rhinos and Przewalski's Horse on the phylogenetic tree. The prehensile trunk, or proboscis on a Tapir is similar to that of a Elephant. They use their elongated snout for plucking vegetation off of branches, and for verbal/non-verbal communication - Primarily a solitary creature, they are the largest animals in South and Central America, standing 5 feet at the shoulder, and weighing 330-650 lbs. These barrel-shaped mammals are the second largest in the world, behind their Asiatic cousin, the Malayan Tapir. Even with a stocky stature, this makes them excellent for the ungulates meat and hide. However, the bushmeat trade can cause harm to these animals through overhunting, along with trophy hunting - Tapir are common in dense rainforests, open savannas, and the wetlands river banks and streams throughout Central America. Intense deforestation for plantations and agricultural purposes threaten their wide range, and shrink the population at a rapid pace. Through conservation efforts, local territories better understand the ecology and protection to the Baird's Tapir. To the average ongoing guest visiting the Asian Savanna, it's just a Greater One-horned Rhinoceros. It's a bulky Perissodactyl with greyish-brown skin folds covered in wart-like bumps. This gives it the impression of an armor-plated appearance, along one singular horn. It's an amazing animal, nonetheless. Although, there's much more significance to this species of rhino aside from its biology - This is Joona: a four year old member of the crash who was recently introduced to the Safari Park by recommendation of the Association of Zoos and Aquarium. She was born in Feb 22nd, 2020, and was raised in Colorado at the @denverzoo with her mother, Tensing. It had been 28 years since their last calf, along with Tensing being a first time mom. Greater One-horned Rhinos don't have a specific breeding season, and will have a gestation up to 16 months. During that period, pregnancies for calves can be dangerous, with a 40% chance of a miscarriage or stillbirth fate - After a strenuous two day labor for Tensing, with a ruptered birth sac, and care specialists observing from the side, Joona was introduced to the world. Her name is based from the Nepalese language, meaning "gift" or "treasure" - This is not only special for the Denver Zoo and Tensing, but also important for wildlife conservations such as the International Rhino Foundation. As the figurehead of Rhinoceros Conservation, they work together by gathering research from captive individuals, and apply it for greater protection of wild populations. To some, it may seem like just a rhino. In the grand scale of wildlife, Joona has made an impact on those from her story and mannerisms. Remember how Maza was eligible for an SSP (Species Survival Plan) with the female Greater One-horned Rhinos at the Safari Park? Well, surprises come one after another. This is one of three calves he will have this year. Unfortunately, the fathers have no role in raising the offspring. Naturally, calves would seperate from their mother after a year and a half. However, that won't be the case since Alta, her mother, will remain with her currently unnamed daughter at the Safari Park - When Greater One-horned Rhinos emerge, they weigh roughly 80-125 lbs. For such a big baby, this tank puppy will wean from Alta for 18 months, while transferring over to solid food. The birth of a Greater One-horned Rhino is significant for their species conservation. More than 80 calves have been born since the Safari Park became public in 1972. This makes the establishment one of the most successful breeding sanctuaries in the United States - During her time here, Alta has given birth to six calves ever since she turned four. Greater One-horned Rhino cows typically go 3-4 years without breeding to prevent aggressive bulls from attacking. Speaking of familiar faces, it was a pleasure to see Maza/Capone back in Urban Jungle. This gentle giant has been on vacation at the Safari Park while the Hippos took over his habitat as their enclosure was under renovation. During his time the Safari Park, his genes prove confident eligibility for the Greater One-horned Rhino SSP. Now that he's finished his job there, he can comfortably bask in the sun - Even though the Malayan Tiger would never cross the same paths as Greater One-horned Rhinos, some animals are better left alone. Bengal Tigers, however, have been documented with contents of these huge ungulates in their remains. These cases aren't always common with adults, and the thick armor-plated skin folds provide a durable defense. - Size also plays a factor: Bulls average between 4,000-6,600 lbs, as Cows typically weigh 3,500 lbs. Connor is always a sight for sore eyes. On my way down Tiger Trail, I was surprised to see him upright in the large exhibit. He's a feline that I rarely see, so it was a golden opportunity to spend time with him. Tigers are one of the Top 3 when it comes to favorite animals. Aside from Polar Bears and Giraffes, these beautiful, striped cats bring out the "awe" in awesome - Out of the mainland species in Asia, Malayan Tigers average within the range between 220-260lbs, while males have reached 300lbs. Much like Yipes, Connor isn't one to be underestimated based on size. Even though he's a carnivore, wild Malayan Tigers remain the apex predator of their region - The palate of a Malayan Tiger typically ranges from deer, antelope and boar. They have been recorded predating on Asiatic Black Bears and Sun Bears, with fur found in the scat. Tigers don't possess speed such as Cheetahs, or numbers that equal those of Lion prides. The Hartmann's Mountain Zebra is the smallest subspecies of Zebra, weighing between 450-820lbs, and 4-5ft when standing. Despite the stature of Yipes here, he's well equipped for defense. As a member of the Asinus (Wild Ass) family, a strike from his hooves could severely cripple or even kill predators such as Lions and Cheetahs. Not only that, but during the breeding season, stallions will bite their opponent with powerful jaws for the opportunity to mate with mares. This would make Yipes a formidable meal, rather than easy fast-food - You may notice some brown hints around his muzzle, going down to his abdomen. However, the real pigmentation remain at the beginning of the stripes on the face. Yipes' favorite past time is engaging in dust bathing - This is also an instinctual behavior his wild counterparts exhibit as well, where they create a depression in the dirt. Hartmann's Mountain Zebras will roll in these pits to help remove harmful insects that try to attack the skin. Meet Jumbe and Shaka, the Lion Brothers of the National Zoo! From what I've been told, Shaka is the dominant of the coalition, with Jumbe following his lead. Although he comes with a grouchy personality, the regal feline still shows signs of being a sweetheart with care specialists and his sibling - Unlike the Cheetah, these two are true big cats. Despite their flat head, massive stature, and elegant mane, they possess one ability that seperates them from other wild cats: a larynx with large vocal cords covered in a fibro-elastic pad. This enables the Lion, and other members in the Panthera phylogenetic tree to roar. However, the larynx is developed more complex than that of a Tigers or Leopards. Lions have square-shapped folds, with a larger surface area and increased mass. It's been a while since I've done a #Caturday, so here's a Cheetah that was roaming their exhibit. I'm not sure of the name of this particular speedster yet, but I'll recognize most of them eventually - Recently, I've recently invested money into upgrades for a digital camera. My prior was a Minolta that lacked a lot of qualities a proper camera should have. After purchasing a Nikon D5600 with a Tamron 400mm lens, it's been knocking the expectations out of the ballpark. Granted, I still have a lot to learn with it, but you'll be noticing photos having advanced focus and sharp details.
