Phantom pain is the term used to describe pain in a part of the body that is no longer present. It is a common experience among people who have experienced limb loss, with a prevalence as high as ~ 80%.[1] The experience of phantom pain can include sensations such as pins and needles, shooting or stabbing pains, burning or electric shock. These sensations may decrease with time distance from the amputation, but in some patients, they persist in the long term. Targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) has gained popularity as a treatment for residual limb pain and phantom limb pain, and may also address neuroma pain [2]. TMR is a procedure which reroutes amputated peripheral nerves by attaching them to nerves nearby which activate muscles, giving the nerve somewhere to go and something to do. Set myself a goal to run 5k in Myrtle Beach and I did it! I didn’t get past week 8 of couch to 5k (28 minutes running) but I got up on our first day and just ground out the run. I was genuinely scared of getting injured so took the hubby with me for insurance and he didn’t complain about how slow he had to go. What for some comes super easy for me is hard gritty determined work. I often feel surrounded by people training for marathons or ultras and can feel ashamed that I’m getting excited for 3 miles but I’m so damn proud of myself. 🏃🏼♀️👊🏼🐢
Just hanging out at my favorite clinic getting a Bisphosphinate infusion. These infusions have been wonderful for helping me have more normal in my life! My quality of life has gotten so much better! I use this medicine on an experimental basis for CRPS (the chronic pain condition that caused the amputation to be necessary). I’m so incredibly grateful to have access to this treatment and to meet cool people every time I have an infusion done! Today I talked with a few people about my leg story and the thing that I found the most cool was being asked about my journey to stay in the church following my leg accident and years of extreme suffering. TMR = Targeted Muscle Reinnervation 🦿 I had this additional procedure done during my amputation surgery. This was totally optional and I'd discussed the pros and cons with my surgeon, but to me, it kind of sounded like a no-brainer! Reconnect the chopped nerves to nearby muscle cells to give them somewhere to go and something to do to potentially reduce the amount of phantom limb pain I'd experience......yes please!! This photo is of my TMR scar on the underside of my knees.....what my youngest son calls my "wiggly worm scar" 🤣 In the first 3 months I experienced lots of phantom pains.....this is the time it takes for the nerves to fully reinnervate. It peaked at about 2.5 months, but since then, the TMR has really worked for me and I rarely get any phantom pain now. I'm very grateful that my surgeon specialised in this procedure and that I was able to take advantage of this. Apparently this procedure can also be performed as a stand alone after an amputation. Ich fühle mich zurzeit unwohl in meinem Körper. Ich hab nach der Amputation über 10kg zugenommen. Die hätte ich gerne wieder runter, ist aber irgrndwie nicht so einfach. Eigentlich würde ich mir wünschen, dass ich mich selbst so akzeptieren könnte wie ich bin. Zu sagen: hey du hast vielleicht ein paar kilos zu viel, du hast deine problemzonen aber das ist total egal, du bist trotzdem wunderschön. Wer mich gut kennt weiß auch dass ich schon mal ziemlich übergewichtig war und dann wieder abgenommen habe. Bin dann aber in eine Essstörung gerutscht. Diese Gedanken sind auch immer da aber ich höre nicht auf sie. Ich esse und ich esse gerne. Wahrscheinlich werde ich wenn ich noch mobiler bin und auch wieder Sport mache automatisch ab. Möchte bald mal Fahrrad fahren und Inlineskating ausprobieren. (I lost the whole text on my previous post the other day.. so here’s explanation) Last Friday I decided to go to the hospital as I didn’t get any news from the vascular. I hate complaining, pushing people, but the truth is if you don’t do it nothing happens… I entered the hospital and was wondering what the hell I should do, who to talk to… I tried to move my appointment from June to earlier but they said it was not possible… sure. I was standing there like a dumb, when a door opened and Sonia the vascular assistant appeared and was SMILING at me! (I thought she would get pissed why I’m there). “Zsu!! Do you read my mind??? I was just going to call you because at noon I receive something which might help, so I was to tell you to come on Monday! It’s great you came in!! “😅🙏🏻 I also did a doppler test to check circulation in foot, which was OK. Then Sonia tried on this special silicon pad, which helps to absorb pressure, used as a cushion in the shoe. We could hardly tuck in the foot into the shoe because we put two layers. It felt a bit better but I knew it was not going to be a final solution. But she said meanwhile the process (the doctors discussing my case) is ongoing it’s a bit of pain relief. I had to go back on Monday, and honestly on the weekend I didn’t walk that much so it was not hurting so bad. However this week I did more activity, exercise etc, and I started to have more and more calluses everyday. Yesterday I was outside the whole day, and it got really bad, it was burning. My skin is so sensitive, and all the tissues inside the foot that it can’t bear this thing overtime. My general pain (and phantom pain) worsened so I won’t use it anymore.🥲 tomorrow I have to go back, I will explain it’s not working unfortunately. I must make them aware, I need a final solution no more experiments. It’s hard for me to advocate for myself, it’s so tiring… So please wish me luck they understand my suffering and I don’t have to keep complaining. Otherwise I’m so fine and happy! I just want to solve this once and for all 🙏🏻🤍✨🌸🌺

Spring shorts weather is my kind of weather! It’s nice an sunny today and I’m enjoying our mostly accessible yard for a moment. Life has been nuts! I have a video in the editing stage, but it might be stuck there for a while. If you didn’t know already, April is Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month! While I haven’t had many posts about this, I am happy to educate and share about life as an amputee. A common misconception is that amputees can wear a prosthetic leg whenever they want to, but I’m here to tell that this is more abnormal than normal for amputees. I’d love to be able to wear my prosthetic leg 24/7 but even an amputee that can tolerate a leg the majority of a work day needs to take it off when they get home due to pain, blisters, sweat collection in the liner and to allow the limb to rest. Overuse of a prosthetic can causes all sorts of problems! Then, there’s a lot of amputees including myself that struggle with sensitivity issues or phantom limb pain. Hello there my Phoenix Family! I wanted to post a quick update for you on my YouTube video progress! The video on amputee advocacy has been filmed and I’m currently in the editing stages of it. The last week has been like a complete huge tornado 🌪️ roared through our life, but don’t worry, everybody is safe and doing well even if our life is messy at the moment. I haven’t had as much time or energy as usual for working on my One Footed Phoenix accounts though, so thank you for your patience with me! Pictured is an insulated bag that holds my wheelchair push assist unit. Because of the large battery I don’t like to have it in the car not being insulated in the summer time because it’s dangerous for the battery inside the unit. If I ever fly with my wheelchair, I am required to disclose the battery is in my luggage and can’t be placed in the belly of the plane as well. I’m also going to try to be better at documenting what’s going on in our life right now so I can share insights with you all at a later date! I’ve also been trying to better at making backup copies of my footage and photos in case of an electronics failure.
