It’s been an intensely busy growing season so far you guys! We built out an incredible internship program but I am sad to admit we didn’t find too many folks. In years to come we’ll fine tune our process and find all you wonderful beginning farmers and seed growers! In the meantime we’ve moved forward with our partnership with @earlymorningorchards @earlymorningproduce and are full swing into our seed adaptation program. It is still going strong despite the low turn out for the interns. We are working on a very challenging piece of land that is perfect for stressing our plants! We’re on furrow irrigation right now and are working hard to make do and find some resilient varieties with minimal resources. So grateful to Early Morning Orchard to be supporting local seed adaptation and production!!

Two artists currently exhibiting in the Gallery use earth to create pigments and as part of their art practice. Pictured here is a shot of Maraea Timutimu's studio table showing pigments made from whenua gathered from her maternal and paternal kāinga in Tauranga Moana and Rūātoki. For Maraea, using whenua is a way to approach portraiture – to stand in for people and places of importance. Ayesha Green has also used whenua to create some of the paintings in her exhibition. She has used kōkōwai, a type of rock traditionally used to produce a red-ochre pigment. Here is a detail from, 'Myrtle', a clever re-appropriation of Gordon Walters' work.
