Can anyone confirm that this is Fragaria virgin (wild strawberry)? Both Google Lens and Picture This identify it as such, but here is the thing. I planted one plug-size plant late summer of 2022 and I can not believe it would have spread so quickly in one (2023) growing season. It escaped the cover raised bed in all directions! Building our world, together! 🌎 We desired for the LLC food garden to be more accessible and to have a welcoming feeling; one of warm invitation and a meandering sense that you should stay a while, look all around, observe the micro, slow your breath and your mind. Regulate with the land. Allow the land to hold you. Allow the land to heal you. Whelp. That actually takes literal physical labour, time, resources, money, and energy when you are in an urbanized place - aka you are not living in “the wild” with a caring and sharing village culture. We are doing our best through a practice of indigenous ways of knowing, permaculture design, biomimicry, and working to replicate that experience of wonderment and exhalation… while growing food and supporting right relationship / land stewardship / community healing 🌻. It’s a work in progress, and the most critical thing we can do is listen to the lived experience and wisdom of the folks involved - to hear them and take action to create a sweeter, safer space. We’ve all got a lot to learn, and doing it together is the magic of landing forward 🍓 This year, we expanded the garden & fencing and created larger pathways for accessibility for those with mobility differences and/or aids, for wheelbarrows, and for more ease in connection. Keyholes for planting, harvesting, peering. Pathways that draw you in to explore. Companion planting for support, nutrient density, beauty, exploration, and education. A hang out zone to rest, reflect, and imagine yourself as a pollinator or plant in the sunshine, in the rain, in the wind. Our last lamb of the season was born this afternoon. The ewe was having a very hard time as the lamb was presenting head first, so after a while of her pushing we decided to assist. This was my first time assisting, but I’m thankful for the experience and the preparation it provides for future difficulties. I had a hard time finding the legs, but eventually did, and she was able to push the lamb the rest of the way out. Everyone was exhausted after, but the lamb was alive, and ended up being a baby ewe! Total this year were 10 lambs born to 6 ewes. 5 ram lambs and 5 ewe lambs. 1 ewe lamb lost at 2 days old so far (down to 9 lambs total). A few more lambs are looking pretty thin so we will keeping an eye on them. It’s been a pretty awesome experience!

Sichuan pepper trees have just arrived! (Zanthoxylum simulans.) They are an amazing 6-7 feet tall and look incredibly unique with their bright green foliage against dark, almost-black bark and prehistoric-looking thorns. Though not a true pepper, the seed cases of this plant are used to create the commonly known Sichuan (or Szechuan) pepper spice mix. The Sichuan pepper’s leaves, bark and fruit are all aromatic. Creamy flowers in spring are followed by bright red fruit and attractive yellow fall foliage. Plant in full sun to part shade and expect them to grow 8-13 feet tall. Don’t worry about the cold - they are hardy to Zone 5, and self-pollinating, so you only need one. Message me if you’re interested in adding one to your collection. I was playing around with my new mandoline the other day and this happened! It’s a cucumber round topped with a thinner than paper slice of avocado, hummus, @chutnipunch Super Sesame spice blend, pickled red onions (sliced on the mandoline of course 😁), and homegrown cilantro flowers. We are expanding ! With our family growing, so is our need for more space. And there we go - a second room & bathroom attached to our main house, is in process. Our original idea was to have it finished before the birth, that idea though quickly vanished. 🙆🏼♀️ We (Or especially I) soon realized that life here in the mountain doesn’t work like this - with time lines, due dates and fix plans, … Especially hard physical work requires breaks for recovery, wood delivery sometime needs more time than expected, physical sickness comes in between and is asking for rest … I can not do much heavy work respecting my big belly at the moment. But I love to keep being active doing more simple things like sanding the wooden poles, painting them and assisting Marco while he is doing the main work of constructing this building. Feeling so grateful for having a partner that is so skilled. Une trentaine de millimètres de pluie ce weekend, en marge d'un épisode cévenol, des températures qui montent... c'est juste le moment idéal pour rajouter une grosse couche de compost/paillage dans le jardin potager et le jardin d'agrément d'une de mes clientes. Le timing est parfait! La couche de compost servira de paillage et gardera l'humidité dans le sol pour un bon moment. À chaque fois que je vais chercher de ce compost dans une ancienne carrière de la commune et qu'il a plu, l'activité microbienne repart et c'est un compost tout chaud que je récupère pour étaler dans le jardin... Presque noir, ce compost est un superbe écrin pour les légumes et les fleurs qui ont commencé à s'y épanouir... Tutto il pomeriggio a falciare l'erba (sì, una/due volte l'anno la tagliamo anche noi). Ad un certo punto Loris mi dice "lasciamo minimo 3 metri di zona di rispetto". Con "zona di rispetto" intendeva un perimetro da lasciare incolto. Mi sono soffermata a pensare a quanto è stata bella la scelta delle parole che ha usato: ZONA DI RISPETTO Avrebbe potuto usare mille altre parole e ha scelto le più vere. Lasciare una zona di rispetto permette agli animali di avere un riparo al sicuro fra le erbacee e agli impollinatori di trovare fiori spontanei (meglio ancora se si semina fiori melliferi su sodo o con le seed bombs). #careoftheearth #careofthefuture #permaculture
