Awash in colors, patterns, and music, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders' spring plays were an incredible performance of Sundiata, the Lion King of Mali. This collaboration of multiple grades (directed by music teachers Sofia Lopez-Ibor, James Harding, and special guest ethonomusicologist Dr. Kofi Gbolonyo) was energetic, suspenseful, and joyous. 📚 January reading round-up part 3 📚 A little bit of reading for the undergraduate module I teach, with a range of epics for this term ✨ Paradise Lost by John Milton ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A re-read of an old favourite- this time as a refresher for teaching it. It was nice to read it from the perspective of epic literature rather than my usual focus on hell for the thesis. Plus, getting a new group of students interested in Milton has been great fun. This African epic about Mali and its legendary leader was fantastic. It's easy to read and short for anyone looking to learn more about epic narratives- I'd definitely recommend it! It’s the story of Volans and life with her 3 pups. There’s a lot of information in these 40 pages! Sure to please any animal loving kid. ❤️Sundiata: Lion King of Mali was my favorite. I’m a David Wisniewski fan. I always love the historical tale and the paper cut illustrations. If you see his books make sure to take a look! 🌟 Tia Fortuna’s New Home: A Jewish Cuban Journey was also very good and led to the most discussion. The Lion King story was believed to be stolen from the Mali people. It’s loosely based on its founder Sundiata Keita. Who became known as "SIMBO", meaning master of the bush, due to his superior hunting skills. He was the first king of the Mande people to use the title "Mansa", which meant "king of kings." Mansa Musa, the famous and wealthy king of the Mali, was Sundiata's grandnephew. David Wisniewski's 1992 picture book version of the African epic of "Sundiata, Lion King of Mali" and the actual historical account of the 13th century Lion King, Sundiata, are both badly served by Disney's "The Lion King. 👎Disney has been praised for using African animals as story characters; for using the African landscape as a story setting; for using African artwork as design motifs; and for using African-American actors as the voices for the film characters. If the film succeeds in having African culture accepted by people usually resistant to recognizing any other culture but their own, then it deserves to be noted for this small breach in the racial divide. Nevertheless, in the larger sense, the film diminishes the culturally rich heritage of history and story from which it derives. Sundiata was the 12th son of a king of Mali, and he was viewed by the king's "griot" as destined for greatness. He grew to manhood in exile, but he returned to fight the evil forces of his brother and return the kingdom to its rightful sovereignty. The film converts the real hero's private pain and struggle against truly wrenching physical and political disabilities into a screen situation of sentimental, tearjerker shallowness. Book #18 of 2023! Sunjata By: Bamba Suso and Banna Kanute Sunjata, the epic oral story about the rise of the founding king of the Malian empire, Sundiata Keita, in the 13th century AD. One thing that must be noted is that there is no definitive tale of Sunjata, the story is told by Mandinka jalis, who suit each telling to the audience and the occasion. While the major elements of the story are present in each telling, there are major and minor variations depending on who is telling the story. This particular text contains two different versions, the first is shorter and was performed by the jali Bamba Suso, whose performance was more focused on speech and the story itself. The second, longer version was performed by Banna Kanute, another jali, who focused more on the musical aspects and the performance of the story. Sunjata is a part of the history of the Mande people, and serves as a reminder of who they are and their place in the world.
