✨Week 4: Summer Weekly Showcase✨ 👩🎨 Vicky Smith - ‘The Cold Bark Against My Back’ 🗓 Open 6th September – 11th September 2022 11am-4pm 🍷 Reception Thursday 8th September at 6.30 pm 📍Engage Art Studios Gallery @vickysmith.ie Made over two years, these works are informed by the experience of the artist being a mother while trying to make work, the longing to go to new places outside the home, and memories as well as more collective feminist themes. Through the process of painting, making, sketching ideas, and writing her thoughts, Smith reflects on these themes to understand and make sense of her world, in particular the position of women. She considers how our lives change in motion, leading us to one final destination. At first she considers Greek philosopher Marcus Aurelius’s question in Meditations: “What does nature hold dearer or more proper to herself than the invisible existence of change?” The starting point for this new body of work is Smith’s fascination with stories of women in the news media concerning attacks, catastrophe, conflict, depression, desperation, domestic acts, loss, love, moving on, murder, resilience, survival and willpower. She is intrigued by how certain mass media stories about women resonate for women as echoes of their own lives. Women’s stories interconnect like the branches of a tree or a woven tapestry or the thread count in a blanket. Smith is drawn to the crisis in each story by how it is unpacked, as if each woman is unfolding clothes from a suitcase after a journey from girlhood to womanhood and beyond. Smith appropriates news photographs depicting these women, meshing them into paint, photo collages, readymade sculptures, annotated sketchbook drawings, and collages. #engageartstudios #summerweeklyshowcase #vickysmith #irishart #galway

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to present Vicky Smith's first solo exhibition titled The Cold Bark Against My Back. Made over two years, these works are informed by the experience of the artist being a mother while trying to make work, the longing to go to new places outside the home, and the life events as well as more collective feminist themes. The starting point for this new body of work is Smith's fascination with stories of women in the news media concerning attacks, catastrophe, conflict, depression, desperation, domestic acts, loss, love, moving on, murder, resilience, survival and willpower. She is intrigued by how certain mass media stories about women resonate for women as echoes of their own lives. Cathy Rogers @cathy.s.rogers is an artist, experimental filmmaker, amateur gardener and film programmer. She lives in Ramsgate and works from her studio in the town centre. Cathy creates moving and static works using 8 and 16mm film. With a first degree in Public Art and Design her interest in architectural spaces, both habited and uninhabited, remains. Cathy’s early edited in-camera super 8 films used the focal length the lens to break down the distance between subject and camera exploring architectural structures, their static forms made into moving spacial representations. More recent works include super 8mm pinhole and 16mm camera-less films of moving trains, empty spaces and architectural voids, 3-dimensional objects such as garden plants and recently a radiator. The works are shown as installations, photographic objects and in programmed screenings. Cathy’s research area is Paracinema, completing an MPhil from the RCA in 2014. Images: 1. This Sunday visit our Basement to watch works by British women artist-filmmakers all interested in the physical, sculptural qualities of film. Drop in to watch the films for free, which are part of @photooxfordfestival and enjoy an in-person Q&A with the film programme’s curator, Helen DeWitt. ⠀ Modern Art Oxford curator Amy Budd explains how many of the films being screened are “hand-made without a camera and are processed using optical printing.” All these films are made by women and range from the early 1970s to the present day.
