So Young Kim ( @kim_ssyoung )(b.1991 in Seoul, South Korea) is an artist based in Singapore, South Korea, and the UK. She holds a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Loughborough University, UK (2013), and an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art. (2022) Kim has exhibited her work extensively since 2011 and it has been collected internationally across Europe, Asia, and the US. With the onset of the 2020 pandemic, many changes have taken place in the way Kim works. If the use of material objects was the basis of her previous works, the basis of her work now is digital objects. She found this new approach to her practice by reviewing Steyerl’s view on the revolutionary possibilities of abandoned and poor images. Her view is that images should no longer be seen as emblems of objects but as objects themselves. The work that started with images (images as objects) brought more possibilities. Today's featured artist is Constance Thalken, a retired professor emerita at Georgia State University, and her take on the darker side of development and the complexity of nature in her solo show at Whitespace Gallery (2022). The show was divided into two bodies of work in two separate spaces. The main exhibition, “Exit Wounds,” was centered on the disruption of development in Thalken’s Decatur neighborhood. And in the smaller cellar space close to the main gallery, Thalken’s work continues in “Between Worlds” where she photographs a hornet’s nest with the kind of granular detail that suggests a scientist studying a specimen under a microscope. Art and Activism Charlie Watts' lecture on her art exhibit "Entangled" at the White Space Gallery was so inspiring. It was the perfect blend of Art and Activism; she spoke on how the Weelaunee Forest in Southeast Atlanta is being encroached upon by Cop City, a proposed military-like training facility for police. Watt's lecture was so compelling, since all of her images were photographed in the Weelaunee Forest. In fact, she has been photographing and creating art in that forest for almost 20 years. Upon completion of her lecture, many people in the audience vowed to get more petition signatures from family and friends to get the topic of Cop City put on the ballad, so people will have a chance to vote on their choices. Who says Activism has to look a certain way? Charlie Watts' art exhibit serves up activism in a subtle, yet powerful way! Yay!
