Posted @withregram • @chiahao1 🇺🇸 #pvtdannychen Posted @withregram • @weareaanow 9 years ago, on October 3, 2011, US Army Private Danny Chen's body was found with a self inflicted gun wound at Combat Outpost Palace in Afghanistan. Today, Manhattan's Chinatown where Chen was born and raised, celebrates his life where they have renamed a partion of Elizabeth St. to Danny Chen Way. The 19 year old Chen died by suicide, following ongoing verbal and physical attacks. He was singled out for being Asian American, by his fellow soldiers in Afghanistan where Chen was serving active duty with the US Army. Military investigators found that Chen was the target of ethnic slurs and endured physical attacks at the hands of his fellow soldiers before his death. Chen was found to have been physically and verbally abused by his superiors, who appeared to single him out for being Chinese American. This abuse occurred on a daily basis for six weeks before his death. As the only American soldier with Chinese ancestry in the unit, he was singled out, endured taunts including racial slurs such as "gook", "chink", "Jackie Chan", "Soy Sauce" and "dragon lady;" assigned excessive guard duty to the point of exhaustion, made to do push-ups while holding water in his mouth, and put in a "simulated sitting position" and kicked by other soldiers using their knees, among other abuses. Following his death 8 soldiers were charged with various crimes leading to his death, ranging from assault, involuntary manslaughter, negligent homicide and others. involuntary manslaughter charge was later dropped by investigators. Four of the eight soldiers were recommended for court-martial on the remaining charges, such as negligent homicide, which carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison. Following the suicide of Private Chen and Lance Corporal Henry Lew, Congresswoman Judy Chu helped push for the “Henry Lew Military Hazing and Accountability Act” which was passed in 2017. . . . #aanow #aapi #asianamerican #pacificislander #usarmy #dannychen #dontforgetdanny #chinatown #chinatownnyc #elizabethstreet

The Illinois lower house passed a bill requiring public schools to teach Asian American history, setting the stage for possible adoption of milestone legislation amid rising incidents of violence against people of Asian descent. The bill, which would mandate the teaching of a unit of Asian-American history in public elementary and high schools starting in the 2022-2023 school year, passed the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives by a vote of 98 to 13. "Asian Americans are a part of the American fabric but we are often invisible," said state representative Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz, a Democrat and co-sponsor of the bill. "Empathy comes from understanding. We cannot do better unless we know better." The Teaching Equitable Asian American Community History Act will now go to the Senate for deliberations and a possible floor vote. If passed, advocates say, it would make Illinois the first state to mandate a unit of Asian-American history in schools. Sohyun An, a professor at Georgia's Kennesaw State University who has researched how U.S. kids are taught about Asian-American history, sees the Illinois legislation as a step in the right direction. She said schools that do teach Asian-American history often do so in a way that depicts people of Asian descent as either a military or economic threat. #equity #aanow #education #antiracist #pedagogy #equality #diversity #diversityandinclusion #racialjustice #sytemicracism #structuralracism #bipoc #asianhistory #activism #illinois #justice #race #showupforothers #aapi #racism #antibias #stopasianhate #asianamerican #inclusion #equality #asianlivesmatter #collectivetrauma #ethnicstudies #color #pacificislander

UCLA's @jsilky5 is projected to be the second Asian American @nba first-round pick, possibly in the lottery, he has become an inspiration for younger players at a time when hate crimes against Asian Americans are on the rise. ”It’s not something that’s on the top of my mind or really think about. I’m just Johnny,” said Juzang, whose mother is Vietnamese. ”I will get messages or hear stories about how I inspire people, regardless of their heritage. Sometimes there are people of Asian decent. But just being able to inspire people is something that’s touching and inspires me and something I don’t take lightly.” Juzang’s older brother Christian played at Harvard and led the Saigon Heat to the 2020 championsh ip in the Vietnamese Basketball Association. Christian was the top pick in the VBA draft, and the younger Juzang looks like he has an even brighter professional future. He has thrived on the court since transferring to Westwood. A former five-star recruit, the 6-foot-6 guard was a role player on a loaded Kentucky team, averaging 2.9 points and 1.9 assists in 28 games as a freshman. @rikdaddy talks shares his experiences with racism growing up Asian American in Orange County. "One time my dad was driving home and he had a “Proud to be American” sticker on the window because we were Americans, or so we thought. At the Tustin exit on the 91E freeway, a white dude honked at my dad to roll down his window. Then yelled out “you’re Asian. You can’t have a ‘Proud to be American’ sticker on your German car!” In which my dad promptly responded, “You know what? Fuck you!” and drove off. It was that moment when I realized that no matter how successful as Americans we were, we’ll never really accepted as Americans. If that makes sense." Read more of Ricky's story at aanow.com We put this video together in Spring 2020. Since we posted it, things have only gotten worse. Asian hate crimes are not new but since Trump started using terms like "Kung Flu" and "China Virus" it has only given people the green light to be racist. So if that’s on the basketball court, then I love that.” At 6'1" UCLA's @natalie_chou_ is one of the few Asian American Division 1 athletes and is looking to make a difference in the world. “She wants to make a difference in the world,” coach Cori Close said. “There’s been an inner strength that has sort of organically come out of her. … She’s fighting. She’s fighting in a way we’ve never seen and I think that translates on the court.” Chou is averaging 10 points and 4.3 rebounds a game, both career highs, as the No. 3 seed Bruins face No. 14 seed Wyoming in the first round of the Hemisfair Region in the NCAA tournament. UCLA (16-5) relies mostly on third-team All-American Michaela Onyenwere and All-Pac-12 guard Charisma Osborne, but role players like Chou will determine whether the Bruins can break through after four straight NCAA regional semifinals to reach their first Final Four. When Chou’s parents and older sister moved to Texas, where she was born, Li built her life on basketball. She didn’t have many friends and she didn’t know the language. Posted @withregram • @weareaanow For Desi women who grew up in mostly white schools, that story might be uncomfortably familiar. Young South Asians say their elementary and middle school years were characterized by a dominating feature: hair. Everywhere. Bushy unibrows, thick leg hair, upper lip fuzz and coarse locks made them feel othered — and ugly — when they were 12. As conversations about beauty, self-love and internalized racism come to the forefront, brown women are confronting what that did to them. White society set the standard that their body hair and face hair wasn't beautiful, Desi women say. And after years of promoting plucking, shaving and threading, the beauty industry put bushy eyebrows back on trend. Exhausted by being beholden to a standard that disregards them, Desi women say they have no choice but to define beauty on their own terms. Struggling with his pursuit of pro basketball dreams, Boogie must also deal with a blossoming romance with his classmate Eleanor (played by @taylour) and an overbearing mother who has different plans for her son, all while preparing for a showdown with Monk (played by the late rapper, @realpopsmoke), a local rival with skills on the court as great as his own. @jdmwong had a chance to catch up with Taylor for AA NOW to speak about how meeting Huang on a basketball court in real life would eventually change his life forever in more ways than one. . . . #aanow #aapi #asianamerican #pacificislander #representationmatters #boogie #boogiemovie #eddiehuang #popsmoke #focuspictures #taylortakahashi

The trailer for Boogie, @mreddiehuang's directorial debut has just been released. Boogie follows the story of Alfred "Boogie" Chin a Chinese-Taiwanese American high school basketball star fighting for a path to the NBA amidst turmoil at home in Queens, New York. "This has been the same story I've [long] been trying to tell whether it was like selling sandwiches or writing Fresh Off the Boat," Huang said to @entertainmentweekly Though the culture he grew up in plays a big part in the script he wrote, Huang concludes that "I've been very careful with everyone to not present it as an Asian American film. I am Asian American, that is what I represent. That's what I come from. But I'm very much into the intersection of all our experiences. And to me, this is an intersectional immigrant story. This is for all immigrants in America." Former Democratic presidential candidate @andrewyang has officially that he will be running for the next mayor of New York City. "I'm running for mayor for a very simple reason," Yang told a group of supporters in Upper Manhattan. "I see a crisis and believe that I can help." One of his presidential campaign ideas, Universal Basic Income (UBI), carries over into his mayoral campaign. HIs campaign circulated a proposal for a UBI program that would provide 500,000 low-income residents with $2,000 to $5,000 a year and enroll participants in what Yang is calling the People’s Bank of New York City, with the ultimate goal of “ending poverty in New York City altogether,” according to a copy of the plan. Yang joins an already crowded race which includes New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, former de Blasio attorney and MSNBC fixture Maya Wiley, former Obama-era housing secretary Shaun Donovan, and former New York City sanitation chief Kathryn Garcia. New York City has never had a woman serve as mayor and has only once had a mayor who was not a white man — David Dinkins at the start of the 1990s. . . . #aanow #aapi #asianamerican #pacificislander #andrewyang #nyc #representationmatters #forwardnewyork #mayorofnyc

Our vote and identities have power ✊🏽 (Go Georgia!!! 🍑) Repost from @weareaanow Rep. Marilyn Strickland (D-Wash.), who last year became one of the first Korean American women to win election to Congress, was sworn in on Sunday wearing a traditional Korean hanbok. Strickland's office said she is the first representative to wear a hanbok during her swearing-in ceremony, doing so in “honor of her maternal heritage.” “As a woman of both Korean-American and African-American descent, it was deeply personal to wear my Hanbok, which not only symbolizes my heritage and honors my mother, but also serves as a larger testament to the crucial importance of diversity in our nation, state, and the People’s House,” the freshman lawmaker said in a statement. Strickland made history last November when she became one of the first three Korean American women to win election to the House. What are your thoughts on Minari being being considered a foreign film by the #GoldenGlobes...despite the movie being set in America with American actors, writers and produced by an American production company? Following the announcement that #Minari will be categorized as a Foreign film, some of the cast fired back regarding the classification. @danieldaekim called it “the film equivalent of go back to your country” Writer @thumbelulu says it’s the most American film she has seen all year. The story itself is very American. The movie takes place in rural Kansas and is centered around a Korean American family and their pursuit of the American dream. The ruling leaves it out of contention the running for Best Picture nomination. . . . #aanow #aapi #asianamerican #representationmatters #a24 #minari

Despite the fact that the film is set in rural Kansas about a Korean American family pursuing the American dream and featuring an Asian American cast. Repost @variety: #Minari firmly cemented Steven Yeun's leading-man status when it debuted at #SundanceFilmFestival. Now, with release imminent, the actor is approaching a history-making moment. As great as it would be to set a precedent or be part of a moment that breaks through a ceiling, I personally don’t want to be ensnared by that moment, either. The truth that I’m trying to understand for myself is who I am, individually,” Yeun says, getting choked up. “I’m happy to serve a larger moment for the community. And I’m happy to push narratives and show who we are because I am that, too. I am an Asian American and the pride I have for that is immense. But also, for me, it’s really about carrying my space and myself through this life and making sure that I tell it true from my perspective. DHC Skincare, a major Japanese cosmetics firm faced online boycott calls on Wednesday after its CEO used a racial slur for Koreans, and boasted his firm was "pure Japanese." DHC's Yoshiaki Yoshida made the comments in a message on the company's website in which he attacked rival Suntory, a major beverage manufacturer that competes with DHC in the health supplement sector. "For some reason, the models hired for Suntory's commercials are almost all Korean-Japanese. So that's why it seems they're mocked on the Internet as 'Chontory,'" he wrote. "Chon" is a derogatory term for Koreans in Japan, widely regarded as discriminatory. Yoshida went on to write that DHC's employees by comparison were all "pure Japanese." Discrimination against Koreans in Japan goes back decades, against a backdrop of tense ties between Seoul and Tokyo over issues related to wartime history. The election might be over, but the uphill battle against online misinformation, notably within first-generation immigrant communities, wages on. According to @cnn exit polling, Biden won over the majority of Asian American and Pacific Islander voters this presidential election — 61% of AAPI voters supported Biden, while 34% backed President Donald Trump. But if Democrats want to maintain a sizable lead, especially within specific ethnic groups where Democratic support has waned, they must address the growing issue of native-language misinformation, according to grassroots organizers and community activists. Because upon disaggregating voter data — something few non-Asian polling organizations and publications tend to do — the political tendencies of this demographic are more complex and less predictable than meets the eye. A quarter of AAPI voters identify as independent, and as more people become naturalized citizens each cycle, Democrats and Republicans have a fresh slate of voters they’re able to court. Data from the 2020 Asian American Voter Survey showed that out of the six ethnic groups surveyed, Vietnamese Americans were the only ones to express more support for Trump (48%) than Biden (36%). When factoring in surveys that extend back to 2012, however, data suggests that Republican margins, while still in the minority, are increasing. While some Asian experts thought AAPI voters might be turned off by Trump’s harsh xenophobic language (which fed into anti-Asian sentiments), surveys suggest that a not-insignificant minority of the electorate are not just tolerating it but have bought into the rhetoric, in addition to the rampant conspiracy theories. Progressive Asian American organizers say online misinformation, specifically regarding the Democrats and the president-elect, played a role in exposing Asian American voters to more radical right-wing views since 2016. Looking for a holiday story featuring Asian Americans? Check out Netflix's Dash & Lily starring Midori Francis, Troy Iwata, James Saito, Jodi Long and Jennifer Ikeda. @midoriglory and @mrtroyiwata recently spoke with People Magazine about the importance of representation in their show. "It was incredible because this was the first time that I've really even been on a set or in any kind of production where they took the time and care to make sure that every single Asian actor on set was of Japanese descent," says @midoriglory. "And in a time when you're just lucky if they get the general vibe right of the race, it meant so much that they really took that time. It was awesome." Co-star @mrtroyiwata says "One thing that our show does such a wonderful job of doing is portraying this mixed family, but not making it so heavy-handedly about the fact that they're mixed race. It's two backgrounds coming together, this is just a family. It's very matter of fact that half of them are Japanese and half of them are white." As a new surge of COVID-19 cases grips the country, another demographic continues to be especially vulnerable. Asian Americans, too, have suffered outsize job losses and financial instability since the pandemic hit. In August, the 10.7% unemployment rate among Asian Americans was even higher than that of Latinx workers. That figure has dropped in the months since, along with overall unemployment, but remains higher than white unemployment rates; since the pandemic hit, job recovery among white Americans seems to have outpaced that of Asian Americans. The economic impact of the pandemic on Asian Americans is unusual because historically their unemployment rates have been very low—even lower than those of white Americans. In December 2019, when the overall unemployment rate was 3.5%, Asian American unemployment hovered at just 2.5%.
