Editing an academic journal as a faculty member can be enormous fun: you get to champion innovative research, foster the work of new scholars, and shape the future of your field. You also have the opportunity to make a real difference in how scholarly knowledge is created and valued. As interdisciplinary scholars and professional editors know, writing and publishing decisions are deeply political. They can either reinforce or challenge the power dynamics at work in whose voices are heard, whose desires are privileged, and whose worldviews are made into norms. Link to donate in bio. This past week, a 14 year old boy was murdered in East Lancaster’s El Dorado Park. He attended the school I used to teach at where a few years ago I taught his big sister. His family is devastated. We as a community have the opportunity to ease the financial burden of his single mom as she navigates funeral costs and life without her baby boy. Please do what you can and at the very least share. Rest in peace, Benny. P.S. I don’t know all the details of Benny’s death or what he was doing at that park and Tbh I don’t need to. All I know is that Benny was a human being and someone’s baby, someone’s brother, someone’s friend. He was only 14. The lost life of a child is always a tragedy. Always.
Spring semester. Ethnic Studies Professor. Part 2. More final presentations. Today my student Jeremy (photo 1) came back down the hallway where our class is as my other student Jose (photo 2) was helping me take some projects back to my office in a different hall. I’m like oh did you need something? He’s like yes and I’m like ok follow us! When I opened my office and got settled he asked for a photo. Then Jose was like I want one too. It has been nice to hear students tell me the last couple weeks especially how much they learned, how it has impacted them, how they understand why more folks should take this class and why it’s important. One student told me I was her favorite professor today (she’s graduating and transferring) and asked for a hug. Another student was emotional telling me today thank you and how much she learned. I was a little worried when I started here @sbvalleycollege because the students only have me as a professor for one term for a required class and I wasn’t sure about the impact it would have, but I’m realizing now that a lot can be life changing in one semester. Love these students. “Kids in the Antelope Valley are not ok right now. And we need to come together as parents, siblings, friends, community members, educators, etc. to make some big, long needed changes. I’m a local teacher. I taught middle school for ten years at Parkview and New Vista. Now I teach high school. If I had/have your kiddo, they know me as Ms. Reyes 🥰 I have so much love for the kids in our community. They have literally made me into the mom, educator, human I am today. They’re a big reason why I get so angry at the injustices in our schools and in our society. What some of our babies have had to go through will break your heart. And now- just in the last month alone- the community where New Vista is has been shattered by tragedy after tragedy. The Nuñez kids lost their father, most likely murdered by a local deputy gang member. An ADULT female teacher at New Vista provoked and engaged in a physical fight with an 8th grade Black girl. And last night, another tragedy. A 14 year old Latino student from NV was shot and murdered in El Dorado Park, a little brother to my former student. Our streets & schools are not safe for our kids. And I can tell you from personal experience, that school districts and city officials are NOT willing to do what it takes to keep our kids safe. Their idea of safety is more cops and more suspensions. No. Our kids need clean parks and art programs and free city sports and REAL community schools. They need opportunities and jobs and green spaces and to have fun and safe social events. WE ARE ALL WE HAVE. The moms, abuelos, aunties, neighbors, kids, allies, friends. And we are enough. We just have to get ORGANIZED. Come to our Non-profit Community Board meeting on WEDNESDAY MAY 29TH FROM 6:30-8:00. The first 1/2 hour of the meeting will be more business but I’d love you to come learn more about our little grassroots organization. Our goal is to build a community youth center in East Lancaster. 🥰🥰🥰 The last hour we’d like to open it up to the community. What can we dream? What can we demand? #rp @liberated.esc 📚The defendants filed motions to dismiss the case and initiated an anti-SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation) suit, asserting that the plaintiffs’ claims lack legal and factual basis and impinge on their right to free speech. Hearings were scheduled and subsequently canceled without explanation in October 2022, December 2023, and April 2024. Though a hearing to once again consider the motion to dismiss the unfounded lawsuit was scheduled for Thursday May 16th, on Sunday May 11, 2024, the court announced that no one needs to appear at the court hearing, and instead the judge has announced he will make his ruling in writing. In May 2022, liberated Ethnic Studies educators were sued for supporting the teaching of Palestine in Ethnic Studies courses in Los Angeles Unified School District. Due to the baseless lawsuit, for over two years, the Liberated Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum Consortium and United Teachers Los Angeles members have endured emotional, psychological, professional, and financial harm via hate mail, gossip, negative press, the loss of contractual work, being blacklisted, and defamed. The defendants filed motions to dismiss the case and initiated an anti-SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation) suit, asserting that the plaintiffs' claims lack legal and factual basis and impinge on their right to free speech. Hearings were scheduled and subsequently canceled without explanation in October 2022, December 2023, and April 2024. Though a hearing to once again consider the motion to dismiss the unfounded lawsuit was scheduled for Thursday May 16th, on Sunday May 11, 2024, the court announced that no one needs to appear at the court hearing, and instead the judge has announced he will make his ruling in writing. Black Inventor Series: Garrett Morgan, Inventor of the gas mask and the three-position traffic signal Garrett Morgan was a Black inventor and entrepreneur born in 1877 in Kentucky, USA. He is best known for his inventions that greatly impacted both safety and transportation. In 1914, Morgan patented the first version of the gas mask, initially developed to protect workers from inhaling toxic fumes. This invention was later widely used by soldiers during World War I and laid the foundation for modern gas masks. In addition to his contributions to safety equipment, Morgan also invented the three-position traffic signal in 1923. This innovation was a significant improvement over existing traffic signals, as it included a warning position to allow drivers to prepare for a change in traffic flow. Morgan’s traffic signal design became the precursor to the modern traffic light systems used worldwide. Outside of his inventions, Morgan was also a successful entrepreneur, establishing his own sewing machine and hair care product companies. He faced racial discrimination throughout his life but persevered, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and entrepreneurship that continues to inspire generations. On May 6, 215 students from JHS, WHS, and OHS Ethnic Studies classes were part of a day-long summit at San Francisco State University where they attended break-out sessions, interacted with a panel Q & A, and heard powerful words from keynote speaker Dr. Allyson Tintiangco-Cubales, Professor for the College of Ethnic Studies at SFSU.
