On my jet-setting, globe-trotting adventure to find boats made of concrete, in March we found ourselves on the muddy banks of the River Thames, on the hunt for the largest collection old concrete ships in the world. Isn't it incredible (you don't need to answer that)?.These are the Rainham Concrete Barges, a collection of 16 ruined stone vessels poking out of the gloomy, muddy banks of the thames. . These barges were in fact ‘Lighters’ - floating tanks built during WWII for carrying all sorts of fuels, oils and water. Something like 200 were created and in the 1950s these ended up here to shore up the riverbank after flood defences were damaged during a massive storm surge. . Many think these were used during D-Day, but they’re probably getting confused with the much larger ‘Mulberry harbours’ which were floating piers sunk to create temporary harbours on the beaches at Normandy. It’;s more than likely some of these lighters were in use then, but they were more general storage barges than anything else. . The barges are in surprisingly good shape, and are now home to all sorts of birds and wildlife that flit amongst the concrete holes and twisted rebar. Wrak statku MV Demetrios II 🚢 Statek towarowy zbudowany w 1964 roku w Niemczech. Wypłynął z Grecji, z ładunkiem drewna, celem rejsu była Syria. Osiadł na mieliźnie w Pafos 23 marca 1998 r., na wzburzonym morzu. Miał 8 członków załogi: 4 Greków, 2 Syryjczyków, 2 Pakistańczyków. Uratowani zostali drogą powietrzną. Jak się okazało, świadectwa kompetencji żeglarskich kapitana i oficera zostały sfałszowane. Wrak statku Edro III 🚢 🌊 Zbudowany w 1966 roku w Norwegii. Wypłynął z Limassol na Cyprze, celem wyprawy na Rodos z ładunkiem płyt gipsowo-kartonowych. Z powodu złej pogody (silnego wiatru) 8 grudnia 2011 r. uderzył w skały, a następnie rozbił się tuż przy wybrzeżu Coral Bay, niedaleko wsi Pegeia. Było 9 członków załogi- 7 Albańczyków i 2 Egipcjan. Zostali uratowani i przetransportowani helikopterem w bezpieczne miejsce w Pafos. Aby zapobiec katastrofie ekologicznej usunięto paliwo, ładunek i części wyposażenia. Statek planowano naprawić i zwodować, jednak właściciel jednostki nie miał funduszy, a po drugie teren na którym znajduje się wrak jest chroniony i pracę rozbiórkowe mogłyby uszkodzić brzeg. W 2013 r. zabezpieczono kadłub zamykając wszystkie przedziały. Władze zakazały wchodzenia na pokład z powodów bezpieczeństwa, choć początkowo było to możliwe. Why do I take photos of things like this? …. Read on…, La Grande Hermine is a replica of one of the three ships that Jacques Cartier used in 1535 when he sailed the St. Lawrence River. It is 140 feet long. Built in 1914 in Quebec, it began as a ferry on the St. Lawrence river. Then it was a cargo ship and then a floating restaurant. In 1991 it was converted into a replica ship, eventually making its way into Jordan Harbour in 1997. The man who had bought it was going to turn it into another restaurant or a gambling venue but he passed away while waiting for permission to bring it to Niagara Falls, so it stayed in Jordan Harbour waiting for something to be done. In 2003 it was set on fire by vandals and graffiti “artists” added their touch. March 2021 it was determined that there was a large risk of a partial or total collapse due to the amount of deterioration. So in January 2022 they removed the masts. Eventually they will remove the rest of the ship as well. I was able to get a photo of the ship before masts were removed (see last photo) and then I decided I needed to see it again so last month I returned. It looks sad without its masts and crows nest. Every time I went to Niagara Falls or to visit family in St. Catherine’s this ship and it’s masts were my landmark to know where I was. Now I drive by and there are no more masts. Soon this ship will just be a faint memory. That’s why I take photos like this, so there will always be a record of the history that’s gone.
