GB Birmingham, UK These pretty pink bangles were given to me by my grandmother, I remember I was in primary school when I first got these, if I had to guess I would say it was the year 1999 I have quite few, the first being the moment I got given them, I remember the excitement as a kid when my grandmother unpacked the suitcase from her visit to India and these were presented to me. Another being in my teens, and the moment I realised they totally match one of my mums silk saris. Hira Butt Birmingham "The above photos are of my Project," Dhee Kahani" that I did for Herbert Gallery and Museum. It is part of an exhibition, "thirteen ways of looking" curated by Dr Sylvia Theuri. Dhee Kahani explores the place of South Asian women within marital and domestic spaces. It explores the layered complexity of traditional culture of passing the bucket of ancestral expectations of being an exemplary woman and how it can be used to exploit the meaning of relationships. I owned gold bangles as well for a few years but I sold them as I never wore them. They always felt like burden on my hands more than anything. Ummah Birmingham "My suit was from India, my earrings from Pakistan, bangles from England. All thrown together on eid day. My bangles reminded me of how we are in this race. Similar to my bangles we are different sizes, moulded from different materials/social backgrounds. The colours of the bangles may be different, but together it complimented and helped put my suit together. Every Eid mum would pay for our accessories dad paid for the suit. I remember choosing them at the shop, I picked out bangles of different colours from different shelves to match my suit. Different colours, uniquely separated on different shelves, but together in unison they made a complete beautiful set. Similar to us humans, unique alone but beautiful together. We can easily get caught up, all in this race to achieve our dreams and goals, but we need to remember that together we are one - the human race. And Together we will bring out the beauty in one another. 🥻 Posted @withregram • @collective_form Hi, this is @nilupayasmin_ taking over the @collective_form profile for the day- I’m starting off sharing this image from my own family archive. I have been digging up archival images of my Bibi (Paternal Grandmother) for my current commissioned project with @mac_birmingham supported by @hereandnow2020 @aceagrams. After unexpected loosing my Bibi in January 2020, I wanted to implement all of these thoughts and emotion into my project; this connection to ageing but also how we learn from the past -to make something in the future. I soon found I was associating these ideas to grief and healing. I looked back into retracing the many parts of her life – she would be my first thought when I considered ageing, and she could tell numerous stories to date the 66 years of her life. She remembered everything, but also nothing. Reading in and around the contexts of using craft as a therapeutic notion provided to be very helpful for me to articulate what I wanted this work to become. An act of performance plays a big part in the making process of this piece. This installation piece will be exhibited at @mac_birmingham, dates tbc.
