Join us at God’s House Tower on Friday 10th May, to celebrate the opening of the upcoming exhibition ‘Coordinates of Infinity’ a collective exhibition from the Fine Art MA and practice-based PhD students from Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton. Coordinates of Infinity is an exhibition of new works by MA Fine Art and practice-based PhD students from Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton. We think we know where we stand, but the wider we cast the frame, the less certainty we have. We can triangulate our terrestrial position with incredible accuracy, but in spite of the predictability afforded by mapping technologies, do we really grasp our position? A strong thread in this exhibition includes artists grappling with the legacy of their personal and collective histories in their adult lives. In a world where our lives, opinions, and tastes are pervasively broadcast and forecast, how do we come to know our selves? The artists in this exhibition have grown up in multiple global cultures, yet they share more than that which separates them. Here, despite their native language barriers, the common visual language—their shared exploration of the evocative potential of ubiquitous materials—brings them together. Earlier this month, Dominique Le Gendre commenced her residency at the George Padmore Institute as our newest Artist in Residence. Since then, Le Gendre has been documenting her work in the archives. From the 4th of May ‘Layering Cultures’ will be exhibited at Salts Mill as part of the Saltaire Arts Trail. The piece has been made in response to the oral testimonies of Bradford millworkers during the 1970’s, and after re-reading my father’s memoirs from the time he worked at Listers Mill. The work has been undertaken as part of the Lost Mills and Ghost Mansions Project. The work was commissioned by @509arts (founded by Alan Dix) and was funded by Arts Council England. The finished piece will be exhibited at @saltsmillofficial during Saltaire Arts Trail 4-6 May, then at weekends through May. Poem by Nabeela Ahmed, memories by William Welsh and Joyce Dixon. Your Local Arena and Writing on the Wall present a film screening and panel talk: George Orwell (Part V) George Orwell said about his classic dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, ‘I do not believe that the kind of society I describe necessarily will arrive, but I believe that something resembling it could arrive.’ This event, produced in partnership between WoWFEST: FAHRENHEIT 2024 and Your Local Arena, asks: just how close are we to Orwell’s vision — or are we already there? In 1984, BBC’s Arena ran a series of programmes about the life of George Orwell. Part V begins with the tragic death of his wife Eileen in March 1945. Overcome with grief and despairing of the future, Orwell retreated to Jura, a remote Hebridean island. Here, crippled with tuberculosis and isolated from the world, Orwell wrote his last novel, Nineteen Eighty-four, a nightmare vision of a totalitarian future. Orwell explained that ‘The scene of the book is laid in Britain in order to emphasise that the English-speaking races are not innately better than anyone else and that totalitarianism, if not fought against, could triumph anywhere.’ So, are we awake, resisting or sleepwalking into the darkness once again, as imagined by Orwell? Come and watch this classic film about one of the country’s finest writers and listen to a talk afterwards about how near we are to a nineteen eighty-four-type world. Textile artist Allegra Galvin of @wildwoodstudiostory was recently appointed to work with communities in Torbay to work on a Social Fabric Quilt project, where stitching by hand and quilt making will be the catalyst for the sharing of personal stories. Last week, she led an introductory workshop for us in Paignton Library. This was the first stage of her project, which will continue with a series of public workshops to be held over the coming months in Brixham, Paignton, Churston and Torquay Libraries. The project will culminate in the creation of a single quilt, which will weave together the rich story of our local community. Integral to the project is @than_mason, a Creative Technologist, who will record the stories as they are told during the workshops, and who will construct the frame for the final quilt.
