Pineapple sage is one of my favorite herbs to enjoy in late summer. Buy it now, when it's a teeny seedling and plant it in a full sun spot with plenty of growing room. Pineapple sage will grow into a mighty bush filled with scarlet flowers that lure in the hummers in late summer. Remembering the Queen Hearts Brunnera from last year. She was a beauty and settled in quite well next to the Japanese painted fern on the edge the shade bed. She’s yet to emerge this spring and I feel a little like Brandon DeWilde running after the gunfighter at the end of the film, “Shane, Shane, don’t go!” I guess some plants were just meant for a season. Brunnera is hardy in zones 3 to 8, so it could be the summer heat just about did her in. Or it could be she’s taking her time to wake up. Cool, silent Shane never explained and Queen of Hearts will likely keep her secrets, as well. Will keep you posted. #brunnera #perennials #gardeninginthesouth #shadegarden #shadegardening #acookandhergarden

Blackberry winter is the phrase country folk use to describe late spring days when winter bites back. Wild blackberries may be in bloom or even fruiting, and Mother Nature lets you know it’s not summer until she says so. Blackberry plants are one of many aggressive plants on our property. I leave them in the wilder parts and pull them out of the more civilized spots. About a decade ago, I wrote a story about blackberry winter and included a recipe for blackberry dooby, a tasty kind of stewed fruit and pastry combination. Every shade gardener should know about the 3 H’s: hostas, hellebores and heuchera. These powerhouses bring color and texture to the shady spots in my garden. They’re not the only shade perennials, but they’re a great place to start. Of the three, I’ve discovered that heucheras are somewhat finicky. They like shade, but it has to be dry shade, darling. And if their conditions are not met, they’ll flounce faster than a teenager on TikTok. This sweet heuchera likes the shady western side of the azalea hedge, backed by Autumn ferns. She’s on a slight rise, near the winter daphne (also very particular about her accommodations.) Heuchera performs well in terra cotta pots tucked in the shade, too. #garden #acookandhergarden #gardeninginthesouth #gardeningisfun #gardeningisfun #growing #perennials #gardeninginspring #shadegarden #shadegardening #plants #gardeninglife #gardenlife #heuchera

A heartfelt thank you to the live goods merchant who ordered firecracker plant for my local The Home Depot garden center. I see this all over Florida and areas south of my zone 7a/8b garden. Native tiarella cordifolia, foam flower, in the shady border. Purchased @ last fall’s native plant sale and planted thinking it would be a miracle for this fragile looking plant to survive winter. So far, a better choice than finicky heuchera. #acookandhergarden #native #plants #nativeplants #gardeningisfun #gardening #gardeninglife #gardeninginthesouth #gardeninginspring #perennials #shadegarden #shadegardening

It’s almost container planting time in my area. I’ve learned that it’s prudent to wait until we’re past the average last frost date of April 15. April bit back with a late frost in 2023 so I try to be patient before putting tender annuals out. This container by my mailbox was a fall-to-spring favorite last year. There’s flowering cabbage, rainbow chard, a bit of carex, sweet pink snapdragons and my favorite, curly parsley in flower. The violas along the edge were toast, but I hardly notice them. I get extra mileage out of the parsley. It’s a biennial, so when it’s time to leave the planter, I plop it in the flower bed and let it go another season. Pollinators like black swallowtail caterpillars appreciate parsley as a food source. #containergarden #containergardening #falltospring #fallcontainerdesign #springcontainerdesign #parsley #gardening #gardeninginthesouth #acookandhergarden

Tradescantia virginiana, common spiderwort, is a ridiculously easy to grow native plant. I put it in shade: happy happy. Plant in sun: same. The purple blue blooms last for just a day, but there’s always another ready to take its place. #acookandhergarden #nativeplants #tradescantia #spiderwort

Chive blossoms in my garden. These common chives from Bonnie Plants settled in years ago. I’m weak enough around plants. Books do me in. The Master Gardener Volunteers of Cobb County Plant Sale had a shelf of books that needed new homes. Brought these treasures home for $2. That’s right ~ 6 books for a total of two bucks. Dictionary of Plant Names falls open to the entry on fothergilla, named for John Fothergilla, an English physician who grew American plants. Preparing to nerd out over this one as well as Ball Red Book 12th edition from 1974. Stocking Up: How to Preserve the Foods You Grow, Naturally (13th printing, July 1976). Binding crackles when I open it. In contrast to a well-loved issue of Herbaceaous Perennial Plants by Dr. A, @armitageallan , 2nd printing, published in 1989. A book club edition of How to Prune Almost Everything from 1968 looks to be descriptive and nearly devoid of images and illustrations. A Country Garden in Your Backyard looks promising ~ published by Rodale and with a blurb from one of my all-time favorite garden writers, Barbara Damrosch. Oxalis, also called wood sorrel. A sweet little plant that minds its own beeswax in the woodland garden and shows up in early spring in between the hellebores and the hostas. Brought her home from the local Master Gardener plant sale about five years ago, planted her in my deep shade garden and she’s the same as she ever was. Some gardeners kvetch about this plant’s aggressive tendencies. Maybe they have it in more light? As far as I’m concerned, and in keeping with my “live and let live” gardenmantra, oxalis can spread out a bit more and I won’t complain. Go forth and multiply, my dear. #liveandletlive #liveandletliveinthegarden #gardening #oxalis #woodsorrel #liveandletlive🌸 #acookandhergarden

This is a Gulf fritillary caterpillar. It’s much easier to photograph than a Gulf fritillary butterfly. The fritillaries flit from station to station in my pollinator bed, like sugared-up toddlers at a birthday party. This little guy, though, is enjoying the calm after the storm, munching away on a passionflower leaf. The passionflowers (Passiflora incarnata) popped up in the mulch beds and I pulled out as many as I could and potted them up. Mexican sunflower, tithonia, is blooming now at high pollinator time. The outside temperature in Vancouver at noon on Thursday was in the low 20s. Celsius, that is. About 70 Fahrenheit. 70 beautiful, perfect, clear-aired degrees. When we landed in Atlanta at midnight, the temperature was still in the 80s. (F, but who cares when it’s this hot?). Returning to my garden (kinda) made up for the cruel transition to hell-hot Georgia in July. I picked a basketful of ripe tomatoes this morning. Beautiful yellow pear, Romas, and a few more whose names are somewhere in the clutch of plant tags that I’ll rediscover when I declutter in winter. Oh, there’s that word, winter. It’s cold, right? The last few weeks have been beautiful but dry here in the Atlanta-ish area. I think that’s why the Angel’s Trumpet (brugmansia) is a little later to arrive than in previous years. I’m just happy it’s here. Growing brugmansia is like having an annual tree in my front flower bed. This is why I keep a garden journal: so I know that the Monarchs visit my garden the second week of October each year. There’s not many, often just one or two. But I make sure to have plenty for them to eat when they visit. The Benary’s Giant zinnias and the grocery store dahlias, with a side of butterfly bush make a fine feast for the flight south. I grew milkweed this year, but it did not flower. Ever the hopeful gardener, I believe next year will be better for the milkweed and the Monarchs. A bit of research crossed my desk a few years ago that essentially said the late summer gardener wants to be rescued ~ from pest and disease pressure, too much zucchini, unrelenting heat or nonstop rain, you can fill in your August garden problem. I know I don’t think about August in April, when I’m angsting about seedlings that may be hurt by a late frost, or just getting all my plants in the ground before the inevitable dry & hot weather comes in. “We are hateful, awful people,” Julia Roberts admonishes her tribe in ‘Steel Magnolias.’ “sometimes we don’t know how lucky we are.” That May be a leap, right, but the older I get, the more I think everything we need to know has been discussed in a Julia Roberts movie. Call it a proud tomato mom moment. I found parasitoid wasp eggs on an E-vil tobacco hornworm in my garden. The little guys will eat the caterpillar. Isn’t gardening just the coolest? #tobaccohornworm #tomatohornworm #parasitoidwaspeggs #vegetablegardening #gardeninginthesouth #acookandhergarden

I wrote a story about the E-vil tobacco hornworms 🐛 on my tomato plants 🍅 on my blog. See link in bio. #acookandhergarden #tobaccohornworm #tomatohornworm #gardeninginthesouth #vegetablegardening #tomatoes

Capturing azaleas at home at sunset. The whites bloom first and fade first, but the pinks are still going strong, including my favorite, George L. Taber. I remember very few cultivar names, but I always know George. 🌸 and speaking of memories, I take pictures of the hostas before the deer get to them. 🥂Happy Easter, happy spring 🌸 #springishere #azalea #hosta #acookandhergarden

A Garden Center loaded for a spring weekend is a beautiful thing. So much possibility. (Shop early, though, ‘cause it’s gonna rain.) #homedepot #homedepotgardencenter #springflowers #acookandhergarden #springishere #gardening

Dreaming of spring, staring at my box of @botanical_interests seeds and supplies. It’s a little like those first minutes with a new baby, when you just want to soak in all the hope, promise and possibility before the work begins. Give me a day to enjoy the box, then the planting will begin. 🌸 #gardening #dreamingofspring #botanicalinterests #seeds #seedstarting #acookandhergarden

Winter daphne, propagated 3 years ago and still in a nursery pot nestled under a mature stand of azaleas. I need to plant it ~ any thoughts on when (before the hot part of spring?) and where (it’s in protected deep shade now, can it handle unprotected partial shade?)? #acookandhergarden #winterdaphne #gardening

Breaking an IG fast with hellebores. I don’t mind winter, but I’m not crazy about cold. Hellebores fill the flower void between Christmas and spring. #acookandhergarden #hellebores #Lentenrose

One year and one month since it last bloomed. Welcome back, sweet camellia. #camelliasasanqua #camellia #gardeninspiration #gardeninginthesouth #acookandhergarden

October blooms, full sun edition. Asters, sedum spilling over in a container, angel’s trumpet (brugmansia) and sedum ground over (Lemon coral and more). #zone7bgarden #acookandhergarden #asters #gardeninginthesouth #sedum

Look what I found in the flower bed, hiding under the angel’s trumpet and gaura and lilies and goodness-knows-what-else ~ a strawberry pot full of fish scale sedum! Earlier in the summer, I trimmed back the sedum in the bed as it was spilling onto the driveway. I stuck the sprigs in the openings of the pot, watered and hoped for the best. 🙏🏻 Live and let live is my garden philosophy. 🪴I’d say it did alright. Let’s see if it will survive winter outside. 🤞 #acookandhergarden #zone7bgarden #sedum #strawberrypot #strawberrypotsucculents #fishscalesedum
