Took a nice morning hike with my husband in the wet snowfall to check cows… a Saturday luxury. Again, I can’t believe it’s May! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The clouds made a low ceiling that insulated any sound beyond 20 yards, like earmuffs. The snow fell so quietly, that our crunching boots were amplified against the silence… And then we came upon them, gently chewing their cud… Calves napping or stretching… Something about red cows against the evergreens and white snow. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #springsnow #coloradospring #springintherockies #rockymountainspring #rangeland #agroecology #ecologicalrestoration #conservation #foodsystems #ecologicalagriculture #healthysoil #soilscience #environmentalawareness #regenerative #grasslands #regenerativeranching #regenerativeagriculture #wherefoodcomesfrom #naturalresources #education #environmentallyconscious #sustainableagriculture #regenerativeagriculture #agricultural #sustainabilitymatters #ecowarrior #homeontherange #cattledrive #cattlemove #rotationalgrazing #adaptivegrazing @giovanni.ladolcevitaranch

Our egg layers have graduated to the hoop house! They’ve gotten too big to stay in their brooder but with cooler wet temps aren’t quite ready to go on pasture. We’re still able to keep them on deep bedding to make sure they stay healthy while we wait for temps to come back up and get them out on grass as soon as possible. ********************************************* #eggs #farm #grassfarmer #grazinggrass #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming #soil #soilhealth #pastureraised #biomimicry #freerange #agriculture #farming #farmers #ranching #landmanagement #nutrients #grassfedbeef #grassfedgrassfinished #ohiocattle #grassfed #adaptivegrazing #farmtotable #ohio #sustainability #sustainablefarming #beef #beefsustainability #managementintensivegrazing #mobgrazing

Farming in synchrony with nature. Our cattle should be a part of our ecosystem, not fighting with it. Ever since we stopped tilling the soil and using chemical herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers the amount of amphibians on our farm has increased significantly. Amphibians are highly sensitive to negative changes in their environment, especially from chemicals. That makes them a great key indicator species to know which direction your farm is moving . *********************************** #frog #farm #grassfarmer #grazinggrass #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming #soil #soilhealth #pastureraised #biomimicry #freerange #agriculture #farming #farmers #ranching #landmanagement #nutrients #grassfedbeef #grassfedgrassfinished #ohiocattle #grassfed #adaptivegrazing #farmtotable #ohio #sustainability #sustainablefarming #beef #beefsustainability #managementintensivegrazing #mobgrazing

Our bull is back on grass and the day after he started grazing he was shedding hair like crazy. Now that his cows are gone the only thing he wants is a summer hair coat! Utilizing lanes to get more trampling effect on the broomsedge. This is a much wider lane so this would be ok for a little longer term. It's definitely trial and error when you are testing paddock size and shape and can stress the animals so best to be close by whenever making tighter paddocks and only very short term. #mobgrazing #adaptivegrazing #managedgrazing #regenerativeranching #regenerativefarming

Currently we’re transitioning our water system to our warm season on demand tanks. However in the meantime we are hauling water to our Metroparks lease. The cattle always come over and bunch up around the tanks when we come to freshen up and refill their water. Clean water is always a number one priority for the cattle. Not only does this help with a higher level of humane treatment, it also improves animal performance! ********************************* #water #farm #grassfarmer #grazinggrass #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming #soil #soilhealth #pastureraised #biomimicry #freerange #agriculture #farming #farmers #ranching #landmanagement #nutrients #grassfedbeef #grassfedgrassfinished #ohiocattle #grassfed #adaptivegrazing #farmtotable #ohio #sustainability #sustainablefarming #beef #beefsustainability #managementintensivegrazing #mobgrazing

🎬 Join us June 1st for a COMMUNITY viewing of the "Roots So Deep" Documentary! "Many modern agricultural practices damage soil and release stored carbon, but evidence suggests that alternative regenerative agriculture practices, can sequester carbon. I came to learn of ranchers practicing a method called “Adaptive Multi-Paddock” (AMP) grazing, that involves using small-sized paddocks to provide short duration, heavy impact grazing for cows, and long recovery and rest periods for fields after the animals grazed it. The method mimics the migrations of wild herd animals, such as elk, bison and deer." - Peter Byck, Director of Roots So Deep Check out our events page for the trailer! 🦬 https://www.springhouse.farm/events 🌾 #carboncowboy #rootssodeep #regenerativefarm #adaptivegrazing #LoudounFarms #LoudounPossible #Springhousefarm

One easy area to forget or neglect soil health principles is in our own gardens. We grow gardens to produce our own nutrient dense vegetables, why would we reduce their nutrient density by neglecting these principles?! One of those principles is animal integration. While it may not be easy to graze your cattle in your garden, chickens can do a very good job of adding animal impact. Right now we have our layers weeding and feeding the wood chips we use for moisture holding and weed suppression. ***************************************** #pasturedpoultry #farm #grassfarmer #grazinggrass #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming #soil #soilhealth #pastureraised #biomimicry #freerange #agriculture #farming #farmers #ranching #landmanagement #nutrients #grassfedbeef #grassfedgrassfinished #ohiocattle #grassfed #adaptivegrazing #farmtotable #ohio #sustainability #sustainablefarming #beef #beefsustainability #managementintensivegrazing #soilhealthmatters

Coordinating your calving and lambing season with peak forage availability can cut costs for feed, supplementation and labor. 💰 Each year, the average rancher spends 40-60% of his or her cow costs on supplemental feeding, says Robert Wells, senior regenerative ranching advisor. If you’re having to supplement your livestock’s nutrition four to five months out of the year, imagine what reducing those costs by even a small margin could do for the bottom line. Wells recommends taking a new look at the timing of breeding and calving/lambing/kidding seasons in order to optimize nutrition from grazing. “Our goal as good, astute managers should be to time our highest nutritional requirements of our livestock with when we’ve got the best quality and quantity of forage in front of that animal,” he says. “If we do that, we should be able to back off that supplementation. That can be a huge cost savings.” 👉 Interested in reading how to evaluate your production plan? Comment "FORAGE" for the link!

A recent observation I’ve made from bale grazing is that cattle always want to start eating from the top of the bale. No matter what, even if there’s some weathering on the bales top edge, they always seem to sort through the bale from the very top. I wonder if this is a behavior that’s embedded in them from the eons of tall grass grazing that the cattle would’ve adapted and evolved with over time 🤔 ******************************************** #farm #grassfarmer #grazinggrass #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming #soil #soilhealth #pastureraised #biomimicry #freerange #agriculture #farming #farmers #ranching #landmanagement #nutrients #grassfedbeef #grassfedgrassfinished #ohiocattle #grassfed #adaptivegrazing #farmtotable #ohio #sustainability #sustainablefarming #beef #beefsustainability #managementintensivegrazing #mobgrazing #southpoll

Noble regenerative ranching advisors share their suggestions in the latest Noble Rancher article. No ranch family wants to go through the devastation of a wildfire. Whether a localized fire or a giant one like the recent Smokehouse Creek Fire in Texas, wildfires can exact a high toll in lost infrastructure, lost animals and the loss of forage needed for those which remain. There are, however, opportunities and even potential bright spots to consider when beginning the recovery process after such a fire, according to ranch advisors at Noble Research Institute. Three of them recently discussed their thoughts and recommendations for livestock and pasture management, infrastructure repair and even new enterprise directions after a wildfire. 👉 Interested in reading more? 🥛 We did not find any designs for portable milking stanchions that met our specific needs. We needed something: 1) Easy for one person to move without using gasoline/diesel 2) Sturdy enough for the occasionally boisterous cow 3) Safe for the person milking 💡 This is the first prototype of our own design. There are a few things we will change for the next one, but this is a start. 🐮 Notice the platform under her forelimbs? Josh Gaskamp, regenerative ranching advisor and manager, suggests tracking grazing paddocks and management moves in Google Earth ⤵️ A ranch map might be viewed as a guide to what you’ve got: a simple, visual reference to known information. But Josh suggests enlarging your view of mapping tools. “A lot of ranchers who want to introduce more regenerative grazing practices want to start with a grazing plan. Some people are big planners, so that fits them,” Gaskamp says. “But some people are journalers, and when you start to journal your grazing on a map, it turns that map into a decision-making tool.” The difference, he says, comes down to what suits your personality and gets you closer to your grazing goals. “For me, having a bunch of moves planned out ahead feels too prescriptive – I get stuck on what I said I was going to do, rather than observing the forage for what I should actually do in the moment,” Gaskamp says. Instead, he’s found guidance in using digital mapping software to track and journal his grazing decisions and observations. Using an application like Google Earth as his guide, he uses his recordings to make decisions for the future. 👉 Want to read more? Comment "MAP" for the link to the full Noble Rancher article.

A lot of people want to think that the animal in the first pic damages our lands and is detrimental to our wildlife. However I can confidently say that we have never seen as much wildlife, turtles, frogs, birds, and bugs, since we moved away from our conventional row cropping. When we grew row crops with heavy tillage and chemical inputs the only time you saw a turtle was in the spring if it got tilled up. After using some of the pesticides in the past we went years without seeing lightning bugs. Once we brought in cattle, started grazing them adaptively, and stopped tilling and using chemical applications we’ve only seen positive ecological improvement! We’re continually looking forward to continue that positive progression and excited to see what new impacts come next. ******************************************* #farm #grassfarmer #grazinggrass #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming #soil #soilhealth #pastureraised #biomimicry #freerange #agriculture #farming #farmers #ranching #landmanagement #nutrients #grassfedbeef #grassfedgrassfinished #ohiocattle #grassfed #adaptivegrazing #farmtotable #ohio #sustainability #sustainablefarming #beef #beefsustainability #managementintensivegrazing #mobgrazing #nature

Do you know what plants are growing in your pasture? Good and bad. Most ranchers are skilled at spotting the types of plants they don’t want – the invasives or non-desirables – from a mile away. But Noble Research Institute advisors challenge land managers to instead start looking for the plants they do want, and then manage for more. “Our plants tell us a lot about the management that has occurred on the landscape,” Noble regenerative ranching manager Josh Gaskamp says. For better or worse, “If we have a deeper understanding of the types of plant we have, we have a fuller picture of if our management is leading us in a good direction or not.” 👉 Want to read more? Here’s an example of a negative cascading effect cause by my own management. I created some tire tracts from driving the tractor in the same spot, removing vegetation. We also kept walking in the right tire mark which further compacted that side. You can see that after this most recent rain event there is more severe pooling in the right tire mark that has had more traffic, even with the only difference being additional foot traffic. Even in the same area of the field, just a foot away you can see the impact of proper soil health and the impact of negative soil health. ******************************************* #farm #grassfarmer #grazinggrass #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming #soil #soilhealth #pastureraised #biomimicry #freerange #agriculture #farming #farmers #ranching #landmanagement #nutrients #grassfedbeef #grassfedgrassfinished #ohiocattle #grassfed #adaptivegrazing #farmtotable #ohio #sustainability #sustainablefarming #beef #beefsustainability #managementintensivegrazing #mobgrazing #soilhealthmatters

Meet the Family: Jared Hays 👨‍🌾 Jared is the second oldest Hays kid. He works full time here at the farm. His daily responsibilities focus on taking care of the cattle herd . This includes managing our adaptive grazing program. He ensures that the cattle are moved frequently and intentionally to help build healthy soil in our pastures. Jared has learned a lot about soil health over the last few years. Last summer, he rode his motorcycle to Kansas to attend a Soil Health Academy, where he learned more about how to be a good steward of our land and soil. He learned more about how to produce Nutrient Dense Grass Fed Beef. In his spare time, you can find Jared playing bass guitar, riding his dual sport motorcycle, hiking in the backwoods somewhere, listening to music, or hanging out with friends and family. Jared also enjoys spending time in the garden. Our farm cat "Gray Boy" likes to hang out with him while he works in the garden. WHY SET UP A GRAZING EXCLOSURE ⬇️ Will Moseley and Steve Swaffar, Noble regenerative ranching advisors, say a grazing exclosure – a small, fenced area inside a grazing unit that livestock cannot access that gives the rancher a direct view of what and how much was grazed around it – is perhaps the simplest method to help see the potential of our land’s production. “We get in our routine, we overlook things, or don’t see what’s really out there,” Moseley says. “But once we stop and put an exclosure up and take a fresh look at what’s going on there, you can learn a lot.” Here are five ways to use an exclosure as a powerful assessment of your grazing potential: 1️⃣ Potential forage production and animal consumption. 2️⃣ What your livestock actually eat. 3️⃣ Regrowth potential in grazing versus haying. 4️⃣ Compare the grazing habits of different livestock. 5️⃣ Understand the role wildlife pressure plays in pasture potential. “What’s really fun about this is that once you set one up, you start to get curious and excited about it,” Swaffar says. “You’ll find you might make an excuse to go by there and just see, next thing you know, you’re there on a weekly basis going, ‘Huh. That’s interesting, wonder what’s happening there?’ 👉 Want to read more? Comment "EXCLOSURE" for the link to the full Noble Rancher article.

Look at that soil life in February! Granted this is in our green house/chicken house. These earthworms are all over our leftover sunflower stumps. Although it’s not as good as a living root in our raised beds we are still helping feed the earthworms and microbes with high carbon residue and root structure. *********************************************** #farm #grassfarmer #grazinggrass #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming #soil #soilhealth #pastureraised #biomimicry #freerange #agriculture #farming #farmers #ranching #landmanagement #nutrients #grassfedbeef #grassfedgrassfinished #ohiocattle #grassfed #adaptivegrazing #farmtotable #ohio #sustainability #sustainablefarming #beef #beefsustainability #managementintensivegrazing #mobgrazing #micobes

Is your goal to have more ducks visiting ponds and other water features on your farm or ranch? Livestock activity in an impoundment can be neutral or negative depending upon the characteristics of the impoundment and the amount of impact. When livestock do not affect water clarity or plant community, their influence is usually neutral. Problems can occur when livestock muddy water and eliminate vegetation along the banks. Fencing can eliminate these problems. Some other important variables and management decisions to consider include: ➡️ Location ➡️ Size ➡️ Depth ➡️ Water Quality ➡️ Plants ➡️ Drawdown ➡️ Hunting To read this full Noble Rancher article, comment "DUCK" for the link.

Imbolc greetings folks… As it’s the 1st of Feb, we are half way between the winter solstice and the spring equinox… We are halfway through winter.. and sunsets are getting later..We are past the darkest quarter of the year… Woohoo! Despite it being mild, winter is far from over though and due to the incredibly wet months of November & December the cows have already got through their winter grazing and laid out bales… We’ve had to moove them to some new land today.. an area they have never grazed before and has not been grazed by anything for years.. the track around the solar panels where the sheep are currently growing their little lamb seeds… Relieved to find them somewhere to go after a few weeks of exploring options.. and loving seeing them munching mouthfuls of this diverse, deep pasture. #pasturefed, #organiccows, #lincolnredcattle, #adaptivegrazing, #imbolc, #climatechange, #utilisingedge
