16 Characteristics of a Good, Godly Mother I enjoy writing this kind of content so much, but I also always feel so convicted because I want to live up to all of these things myself. Not just merely write about it. For a long time, I let that keep me from writing things like this at all. But this isn't a checklist. It's not a to-do list that makes you a perfect mother once you check all the boxes. Instead this is all about what the Bible has to say about motherhood and women in general. It isn't to call us deeper into perfection, it is to call us deeper into Jesus. ☕️ Mom Hack Monday ☕️ Good Morning Mamas! Let’s chat screen time! We are a largely screen free family- not entirely- we still enjoy the occasional movie night or online game. But I didn’t start off my motherhood journey as a screen-free Mama. In fact, I was the exact opposite. It took my 4 year old developing a screen addiction and myopia for me to realize that screens just don’t work for us. (That doesn’t mean they can’t work for anyone, of course!) We’ve had a lot of questions about how we “cut the cord” and while I do have a full blog up on our website, I thought I would offer you my best tips here for our Mom Hack Monday! So here are the rules for screen time in our house and a few ideas of what we do instead. 1. No TV Until After Dark. This is the rule in our house. Other than for a rogue sick day, we only watch TV after dark. In our house we always say, “God’s light is on, so ours isn’t.” Originally that started when we began our debt free journey and tried to cut back all our bills, but it has stuck around. If God has His lights on and His creation on full display outside then we leave ours off inside. The “No TV Until After Dark” works for us. It means almost no TV in the summer when the days are long and more movie nights in the winter when the nights seem to drag on. 2. Set a Time Limit. One of the biggest issues with screen time is that it always becomes, “Just one more episode!” Or “Just one more game.” Setting a timer that everyone is well aware of helps cut the whining. You’ll probably still hear pleas for just a little longer, but it makes it much easier to stand your ground when you said 1 hour and the timer dings after an hour. Picture it. It’s a cloudy summer morning. The soft warm wind slips through the window in the early morning light as pancakes hum on the stove. The smell of coffee fills the air as warm syrup and melted butter drip like streams on to white plates. Small faces peep over the edge of the bar anxiously awaiting a plate of their own. It’s a beautiful picture isn’t it? Calm. Serene. It would probably make a pretty reel on Instagram or a nice photo for Facebook. And there is no doubt an angle that would capture the desired aesthetic. But that picture doesn’t include the reality. The spilled water all over the floor and flour spread across the counter. The humid air rising with the heat of the cast irons. The nagging headache and kids arguing over seats in the background. I found myself standing over the stove, spatula in hand, reciting to myself “this day is off to a bad start.” Then I stopped. I looked around the kitchen and I saw the picture I painted initially. Breakfast sizzling, children all around, mason jars full of syrup and a stack of clean plates anxiously waiting to be filled. We can focus on whatever part we want to. The presence of our children or their arguing. The spills or the sweet aromas. The sickness or the health. The joy or the chaos. Blessings and burdens often exist simultaneously and we can choose which one we will focus on. One of them will turn our day around and fill our cup, the other will drain us and leave us calling a beautiful day a bad one. Good Morning Mamas! Let’s chat about something I know we are all dying to talk about: children leaving the faith. Okay, I’m sure that isn’t the sunny topic you were hoping for this morning. It isn’t really what I want to think about either. Right now I am sitting on my couch in front of a sunny window staring at my perfect little sunbathed newborn, and when I look into his eyes I know that He could never possibly question the God who made him. But that isn’t reality. My love struck eyes on chubby rolls simply cannot see the future. One thing is for certain though, he will be faced with doubts. Our culture is going to battle him with false ideologies, bad ideas, doubts and questions. I can shelter him for a time, but not forever. [David Kinnaman found that after age 15, almost 60% of young Christians had disconnected from their church […] So while college is and remains a contributing factor, these numbers are an external manifestation of an internal disconnection that started years earlier.] -Mama Bear Apologetics (pg. 28-29) Did you catch that? It isn’t just college or leaving home that is contributing to children walking away from Christianity. An internal disconnection is happening right under our own roofs- and most of us may not even know it. We didn’t birth temporary beings- these little guys are eternal. And they will at some point in their lives make a decision about where they will spend that eternity. And while we are busy burping, diapering, teaching math and drowning in laundry- there is a war being waged for them. Our jobs as Mamas is to stand in the gap. To suit up and war for these little guys like their eternity depends on it- because it does. We cannot make their decisions for them. (Oh how I wish we could!) But we can guard them for a season, equip them with truth, pour out our hearts and our faith in front of them, wrap them in prayer, and walk alongside of them. God is calling us to rise up- to be a generation of Mothers steadfast on raising well aimed arrows. Birth Story #5 I have really enjoyed writing these the past couple of months. With each story I recalled, labor loomed a little nearer and nearer. By the time it actually started (completely out of the blue) I was terrified to go through it again. Birth is one of the most unique and beautiful experiences we can go through. Labor is hard, there is simply no denying that, but it is also some of the most rewarding work we will ever do. For now this is our last birth story, we will see if God chooses to write more with us. Romantizing Motherhood This past week has been a blur. The postpartum period can often feel anything but romantic. Between poopy diapers, mesh panties, and hormone swings it can be hard to remember what a normal day is like. But this is such a precious and sacred time. A time of bonding. A time of stroking new chubby cheeks in the moonlight and taking in the sweet smell of a newborn. A time of slowing down and taking in the fullness of your family and the beauty of a laid back day. A time of praying BIG prayers over a tiny baby. I'm trying to refocus this time from planning and thinking ahead to simply being present right here in this moment. Because for 8 weeks we get to experience the newborn phase and it is hard, beautiful, and eternal work. As a Trini native attending school in Canada I played clarinet in a concert band and orchestra and I never once heard anyone talk about the music of my people or consider playing it. I longed to perform and participate in reggae, calpyso, Soca, caiso... but the schools weren't ready - they will be now because of you. Thank you for sharing your gift with us this weekend. One thing you will ALWAYS find in my classroom is flexible seating. I think we tend to forget/ignore the value of these things in older grades, but older students can benefit from many of the same things as younger students! I left crying, and this was their response. My Principal apologized, then jumped to email who they needed to within our Board. The response to my Principal's email: "Sorry this happened... please give your staff member a hug for me". This speaks volumes of what we truly feel and think of our Black staff, students, and families that we work with and serve. This is what is thought of me - despite my awards and acolades, number of degrees or high IQ. THIS is my reality of 'Teacher Life' as a Black Educator. It ain't equal. It is privileged though! Our little lady is growing like a weed😭❤️ She is spunky, funny, adventurous, and such a love bug. These days there's never a dull moment. Between chasing her, making sure the boys have positive outlets for all their energy and curiosity, housework, and caring for the farm I am wiped out by the end of most days. This may very well be the most challenging time of our lives. Living in the camper and working raw land with small children is definitely not for the faint of heart! There are difficult days that bring me to my knees.... With the world around us crumbling beneath our feet and the evil forces growing in boldness I am evermore convicted in our decision to take the hard road, the one leading in the opposite direction of the world. As a mother, the greatest responsibility I can fulfill is to equip my children with spiritual resilience and instill in them a genuine love for their Savior and their fellow man. I am constantly looking to the Lord for strength, guidance, and direction as we navigate our way through. It is so easy to fall victim to fear, division, hatred, distraction, and lies. That is how the enemy works. The antidote: LOVE❤️ That is how we win this spiritual battle. So simple, yet so difficult at times. It's the last day or two before payday where those 2 weeks worth of groceries have dwindled down to a handful of staples and some stale snacks. I used to dread these days. Makeshift meals and a lot of "No I don't have that, but I will put it on my list." But I've noticed recently how much these days have stretched me in new and innovative directions. Necessity is the mother of invention. And little by little those things I've used to stretch the last couple of days have become not only new and better favorites- but they have also saved us money on groceries!! I look forward to compiling a full blog on this is in the future, but for now we are loving homemade yogurt (which is saving our probiotic passionate family $23 every 2 weeks), homemade cheez-its, the usual homemade bread and breakfast bread (filled with brown sugar, cardamom, ginger, orange zest, pecans, and cranberries) and sourdough pizzas! Last year at this time I was not in the "Christmas spirit." My entire pregnancy was hard with Indie, but I spent those last couple of weeks dreaming of a baby laying under that Christmas tree. I hoped, prayed, and dreamed, and exactly one week before Christmas he made his glorious arrival 🥰🥰 All Christmas day i sat and stared at my sweet boy under the Christmas tree and thanked God for answering that prayer. One year later. He is obsessed with the Christmas tree. To all of my other babies, it had lost its splendor after the first week. But not to Indie. Everytime I look he is under the tree. Tugging at the lights, pulling down the ornaments, playing peek-a-boo with the tree skirt. And everytime I see him there I'm reminded how God answers prayers. Sometimes we exist in the midst of an answered prayer and don't even realize it. I used to pray for my own house and my own kitchen. I used to pray for the family I now feed each night. And a few weeks ago when I was stuck in a meal time rut- I prayed for a new passion in the kitchen. Sometimes it takes something as simple as rolling out a sourdough pie crust or drizzling syrup on a pile of hot pancakes to suddenly remind you that you prayed for this place. And it drives our hearts (and our hands) into a time of worship for the God who cares and who answers even those seemingly silly prayers. Our days should be reflections of His goodness. And the mundane work of day to day life should be a form of worship. We have officially outgrown our dining room table. I'm not looking for a new one; we make this work just fine between a high chair and a bar stool. We have out numbered our beds. I have had to buy more forks so we have enough to last more than a single meal. And now we need more spoons. More cups. I recently had to buy extra plates. Our grocery budget is ridiculous. We go through paper and craft supplies at an alarming rate. This is a season of multiplying. A season of adding. This is a season of bunkbeds, decluttering, and chasing simplicity. This is a season of busyness, chores, crafts, and packed schedules. And someday it may be even wilder- between sports, games, plays, recitals, and new interests. But someday a new season will come. Someday I will pull out 6 plates and realize there are only 4 of us for dinner. Or maybe only 2 of us... Someday I will text goodnight to my kids across town, or across the country... Someday we will begin to subtract. The kids will leave and have families, dreams, lives of their own. Our table will feel too big. I'll complain that there are too many forks and plates. Grocery shopping will cost less but there will be no little hands rummaging through the bags and begging to open everything right then. Someday we will need less. Someday we will subtract and downgrade. There will be less chaos and noise, less mess and possibly more stress. So I'm thankful for this season- a season of multiplying. A season of trusting God to make a way for every need. I don't want to complain that our blessings are outgrowing our possessions- but rather to rejoice! Because God is so good! I often hear people say "I wouldn't have kids in today's world." Or some well intentioned thought about how children today are this or that. I think the heart behind that thought is that children today deserve better than this. I agree, but children in the Roman empire deserved better also. So did children born into slavery. And children born into Jewish families during the Holocaust. But the answer isn't stop having kids. The answer has been the same across generation after generation. Mamas, it is our job to sift through the world and the culture. To curb our children's hearts towards all things good and beautiful. And to shield and protect them from the things that they aren't ready for. Childhood should be beautiful, innocent, and full of Wonder! The world outside of our door may be broken, but we can build something different and better within our homes! And maybe, just maybe our children can raise their own kids in a culture better than the one they were born into. Got to have Christina pop in and watch my kiddos do this measurement task (of course she eventually got her hands in there lol). We created shapes (I actually told them any polygon, regular or irregular) with @scotch masking tape. Then we estimated the perimeter around the shape using string. Next, we confirmed our estimates using a ruler. For some groups they simply used 'units' because the concept of what a unit actually was had not yet clicked; Other groups used centimetres (this discrepancy was the least of my worries since I was only assessing their ability to calculate perimeter this day). One group asked: "what would happen if we used the other side of the ruler (inches)? Would the perimeter be the same since the size of the shape didn't change?" Y'all, I REALLY must trust my kids because I gave them the money in my wallet for this math task... and every last dollar was accounted for 😂 We compared real currency (or legal tender, as we now refer to it lol) and play money to learn how to identify Canadian bills and coins. Honestly, I think spending more than 2 sessions on identifying money is unnecessary (*N.B. It took us 1). Now we are learning to separate dollars and cents with a decimal, add money, and make change... Another Inquiry-Based Lesson: Composing & decomposing shapes & solids. We moved from 2D to 3D and back again. I gave my kiddos plasticine & popsicle sticks and asked them to create a regular polygon (we tried with irregular polygons afterwards). When they finished, I asked them what else they could create. For example, this student made a triangle. I asked her what MIGHT (super important - check Bloom's) you be able to create with more triangles? Or a circle? The rest was up to them. our classroom was immediately filled with the sounds of multiple math talks about shapes, solids, edges, lines, vertices, corners, sides, tops, bottoms and all sorts of amazing things: why this shape would work and this one wouldn't. What's the difference between a shape and a solid (I'm Level 5000 picky on this point)? Is this a prism or a pyramid? If we were baking our room would have smelled like freshly baked pie! This was much better than a worksheet drawing lines from a shape to a solid. Last month our board celebrated Sikh Heritage month. We explored many aspects of the Sikh faith and culture, starting with its rich history. We read a beautiful read aloud by Supriya Kelka called "Harpreet Singh's Many Colours". My kiddos were curious about the difference between a turban and a patka (they were familiar with patkas from earlier this school year when we read "Hats of Faith" by Media Cohan. And so our exploration begun! We were blessed to have someone of the Sikh faith virtually enter our class and share more with us, plus teach us to tie a turban (I still think wrapping my saree is trickier but I'm biased lol). We tied this into our procedural writing.
