I think of a time early in my marriage when I was an old battle axe wife always nagging, never happy, always feeling sorry for myself, having a million expectations on my husband to meet my needs, and controlling him with my manipulation tactics: threats, embarrassment, tears, and ridicule. How could I have been like that? Well, it was my selfishness driving me, wanting my way. I also remember a time when I realized being that way not only made his life a living hell, but it never fixed our marriage, it only made me feel worse, more empty, and less motivated. As I studied Gods word, I honed in on all passages pertaining to my calling as a woman of God and found peace with it. I found Gods ways superior to my own way and it led to a life of gratitude, peace, and selflessness that actually cured my bitterness and anger. I started focusing on following the example of Jesus rather than the feminist agenda of society to dominate and control. My marriage is excellent. It exceeds my wildest dreams of being one with another. It’s rather a mystery how being an encouragement to my husband, treating him like I want to be treated, and even more as I would treat Jesus, created an atmosphere of love and beauty. It’s a mystery. Gods word says so. When a woman sees the power in her created role, abides in alignment with her divine purpose as wife, mother, and keeper of the home, she encounters true peace and joy that only comes from above. * Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for. - Epicurus This wonky little home of ours was only supposed to be a stepping stone to the next home, the “forever” home, the last move, the one where we would finally land where we thought we should be. And just like so many others, it is not happening at all the way we had planned. With that realization, discontent had set in and that discontent was stealing so much life from our home. The discontent was stealing the joy and replacing it with hurt of unmet expectations and hopes. It was robbing me daily of all of the good things that were right in front of me. The moments that I relished in, diminished to just be something that happened and not the beauty of what it truly was. Discontent is like a thief in the night, sneaking in to steal all that is lovely. Diminishing moments to just things that happen, the things we love to do, to things we have to do, every out of place, or this needs done project to another chore to dread. It picks out all of the flaws instead of romancing the extraordinary ordinary and seeing the blessing that is right before us in all of its imperfections. This week I have made the decision to seek the joy in the everyday even when that day or the circumstances do not meet my expectations. I have been doing A LOT of crochet as I recover from surgery. It is a big challenge for me to abide by the doctor's time-line for a return to normal activity. God is reeeaaally using this time to teach me lessons about slowing down, being patient, and taking care of this body He has gifted to me. I am very thankful that I have a hobby that keeps me feeling "productive" and creative during this time of "sitting." I stumbled upon these awesome foam pencil holder/grips and they fit perfectly on my larger metal crochet hooks! Better to humbly and joyfully forego homemade bread to prioritize a fried-chicken supper, than to stubbornly attempt both while burdening your family with great irritability and stress. And, yes, I intended this both literally and metaphorically. I realized the other day that our from-scratch bread supply had dwindled down to merely two slices. But while mentally preparing to make more, my husband voiced a craving for fried chicken that night. "Well," I started sheepishly, "if I attempt both bread and chicken today, I think we both know how that will go." "We have store-bought bread, right? I care more about chicken," Joe responded with a knowing smile. Although our marriage is young, I have enough experience to know what my husband cares about and what he doesn't. He prefers I prioritize a hot meal and greet him with a cheerful, easygoing demeanor at day's end, rather than fretfully try to tackle a large list of ambitious tasks (that may not get done, anyway) and darken our sanctuary with a sour mood while doing it. Ladies, be encouraged: most men aren't so interested in the small details (as is more our nature as women) that they'd trade their wives' warmth and carefree attitude for them. Yes, homemakers can (and should!) strive for excellence, but not at the expense of the peaceful environment in which our husbands take great comfort. I've also discovered that not projecting my own expectations of myself onto his (much different!) expectations of me requires growth and maturity, which is something on which I continually seek to improve.

Can you even imagine how many pounds of tomatoes will eventually be coming off these plants?! My favorite paste tomato, San Marzano. I will be putting up lots of pizza sauce, pasta sauce, tomato sauce, bbq sauce and a host of other foods this summer/fall. I planted 24 seeds and I have 24 healthy little starts. I find them precious 🥹🌱😂. Another two weeks and I will give each start its own pot. Anyway, I will keep four starts for myself and eventually gift the rest because I love doing so. I also have an abundance of red cherry, golden cherry, golden jubilee, and red and yellow Brandywine. Except for shell peas, my spring garden is in. I will continue to prep my summer garden beds with fresh compost so they will be ready towards the end of May when it is time to get my summer garden in. This might be the most challenging puzzle we have completed thus far! My MIL bought us this 2000 piece puzzle of Da Vinci's Last Supper as a Lenten activity. She wanted us to try to have it done before Holy Thursday and we did it! The grainy image, subtle lines, and large blocks of dark colors made this tedious and difficult. Black Bean & Chorizo Tacos for Dinner today. 🙌🏽🍽️🌮 The frijoles were cooked low and slow earlier this week from dry beans, heated & refried. The tortillas were freshly handmade tonight, from nixtamalized masa. The Guacamole Ranchero was made a couple days ago and has been infusing all those yummy flavors together in the fridge. Paired with fresh crisp veggies, queso fresco, Crema Mexicana, and Red Onion & Habanero Escabeche it made for a delicious, simple meal here at home... Apple Pie Bread is quickly becoming a favorite way to use up the enormous amount of apple pie filling we were able to preserve last Fall. It is delicious, sweet but not overly so, and easy to make. This time, I used lard instead of dairy free shortening. We are a food allergy household, so butter is a no-go when I bake. As I try to eliminate things like shortening or seed oil based dairy alternatives, I find myself turning towards lard for baking. I started with a recipe from Allrecipes titled "Quick Apple Pie Bread." I quadrupled it, subbed in lard for butter at a 1:1 ratio, and did not add any additional cinnamon. I spent so much time last year working myself into a tizzy trying to start a mini homestead on our small quarter acre. I stressed myself to the max and caused an incredible amount of tension between myself and my husband. All because I allowed what others were doing to influence what I believed I should be doing and didn't even think to consult with my husband. It turned out that while my husband was fine with chickens and liked the idea of starting a small garden, that was all that he wanted me to devote my time to when it came to homesteading. He knew that I had plenty else on my plate and that my time was better devoted elsewhere. I remember being so resentful when I learned this. I just knew that this was what I was supposed to be doing. What I didn't see was that God was revealing my pride to me. He was revealing how much I leaned on the standard that social media and those whom I looked up to had set for me, rather than what my husband, the head of my household, desired for his home. Ladies, what good is a perfectly curated garden if in order to maintain it, we have to neglect the things that actually matter to our husbands? What profit does a carefully devised meal plan gain us if we are serving food that our family hates? Our homes do not just belong to us. We can love our husbands well by consulting them in how they would like to see the home ran and then taking what they say to heart. Don't get so caught up in the aesthetic that you forget the man you married. A linen dress and an apron doesn't make you a better homemaker if your husband doesn't really like linen dresses. #homemaker #keeperofthehome #christianwife #biblicalmarriage #christianwomen

AMEN! Never let anyone make you feel inferior for this desire! The struggle is real though. I remember going through it in the beginning of my motherhood journey. The desire is so strong because that is how God created it to be, but the world sees no value in any of it. Monday is for Making; sweet treats for my family, fun adventure plans with friends, and making sure my floors are swept and mopped! It's also a day for going through the household budget, checking the cupboards and making a note of which staple items we're running low on and having a cuppa whilst updating the family calendar. As my children have gotten older I've found that some things have changed - they no longer need me in the same ways they once did - and yet some things (like they're endless love for my baking) remain the same! I've been reflecting a lot on the transition from parenting teens to being the parent of adults recently. I'm wondering what my role is now as I'm no longer needed for homeschooling, planning activities, organising their lives and so on; and what I want to do with the time I have available now those duties have been fulfilled.... Creating an oasis - a haven - for my hubby and I in our master suite has been a priority of mine since we got married nearly five years ago. But that priority has only increased since we have welcomed our two sweet children! There is much pouring out to these little souls within our keep; we aim to do it well (we fail daily, but rely on the Lord for His enabling grace to forgive and fortify us). This means that the time after the babies are asleep each night is spent resting and seeking spiritual, intellectual, and relational rejuvenation as we prepare for the next day. At bedtime, my 11 year old daughters like to practice braids on my hair. I will set everything else aside in order to make time for this. As they braid, usually multiple times each, they talk. They tell me funny stories, ask questions about things, share plans they have for all manner of tween girl fun with friends, and they ask me to tell them stories.... It is often the best time of my day. ❤ It certainly doesn't happen every night, but when it does, I soak up every minute. My daughter decided this was the best French braid she has ever done, and she wanted photo evidence. 😂 They are growing so fast, my youngest babies. 🥰 All the grandmas in my life told me it would go fast. And boy, were they right. Lord, Walk with them on the narrow path. Guide every precious step. Shield them and help them along the way.
