Exciting news! HSLDA Canada has been in communication with Alberta Education over the past several months with the goal of developing some options for home educators to engage in group educational activities. We are pleased to announce that Alberta Education has released a policy permitting home educators to meet for educational activities under specified conditions during the pandemic. As per the policy, “Effective January 25, 2021, home education students can participate in joint home education co-op activities / supportive group learning environments outside of their homes while following health measures that also apply to schools.” The changes announced are not a return to pre-Covid-19 normal, but these measures allow the opportunity for home educators to engage in group learning. Many schools and facilities offer insurance coverage for such activities. However, should a facility not offer insurance, HSLDA Canada Member Insurance for groups is available. We are almost half way through #allaboutspellinglevel2 still playing catch up so that her #buildingspellingskills 4 book makes sense. She’s doing grade 4 work for her language arts class but with a diagnosed learning disability in spelling we are working with different curriculums to make this easier on her. Thankfully the AAS curriculum is laid out really well for her and in a way that she prefers to learn. Not sure if anyone needs to hear this today.. we all need a reminder sometimes. Kids are smarter and pick up on more than we will ever know. It can be sooo hard to keep our patience and not get upset. It’s a huge struggle for me daily and I always need reminders. Sometimes something she did the day before perfectly cant be done the following day. Miss K has been working so hard this year on writing and spelling! We are almost at the point where she can do all her own short answer work in her books. Previously I would scribe for her and leave out words for her to then fill in or she would write the first portion and I would finish. I always try to keep things positive and really watch her level of stress. Working with a child who’s severe anxietyis very triggered by written work because of learning disabilities and also her extreme adhd causing her to need to move constantly takes a lot of patience and understanding. Everyday we are learning better ways to coup and make learning easier for her. Did you know that C says /s/ before I, e or y? And that you double the letters F, L and S if they are at the end of a one syllable, one vowel word? Another reason why we homeschool.. because if we didn’t she would spend her time hiding under tables like this... we have found ways to make her sensory processing differences easier on her and more bearable but public school never could. She does do 3 short classes a week in groups out of the house. This week we are working on a set of 18 spelling words, learning about music history and Bach, recognizing patterns in math. We are feeling extra tired, not sure why. We feel more comfortable in the living room floor than at the school table. Today will be a short day, we are wrapping up and planning on going for a bike ride for some fresh air and to get our heart pumping. We do 20minutes of work followed by an educational video, something creative(art or building), a snack or outside time. Her brain works SO hard on learning-concentrating on every little detail, processing more than the average person inside her head while also constantly moving and sensory seeking. Today was super productive! We worked on our supplemental spelling curriculum #allaboutspelling level 1. Little Miss.K has a learning disability in spelling (and writing) and never grasped the fundamentals while she was in public school from k-grade 3. We are really enjoying the All about spelling program because it’s multi sensory and since she is a very squirmy girl, having letter tiles to build works amazing for her! She builds on her confidence with letter sounds/phonograms without the added stress of having to physically write the words.
