When planning a trip to Custer State Park, it’s tough to know which campground to choose from, so let me give you the low down on where we stayed. Our site was #2E in the Game Lodge Campground. It was 50amp electric only, but there were water spigots throughout the park, as well as a dump station. This campground also has multiple shower houses & laundry. I’m not sure if a bad site exists in this loop. Our site was fairly level, extremely spacious and backed up to a meadow where deer were seen on the daily 😍 For $30 a night, I feel like we really scored with this place! Things that made my little brain sparkle (Most of these still do!) - ENCYCLOPEDIAS, ALMANACS, DICTIONARIES, ATLASES: Dude...The facts, the charts, the pictures, the numbers/statistics!!! I remember getting a children’s almanac for my 7th birthday. I carried that thing around everywhere. I'd spend hours reading the set of encyclopedias my grandma had on her shelf at home. - ORGANIZING THINGS: Organizing and reorganizing my toys. Sorting my books by color, by size...alphabetizing them. It just never got old. I had tons of barbies & barbie clothes, accessories, furniture, etc. My “doll play” was literally just dressing them, setting up different scenes, and enjoying the visual experience. I did not make my dolls “talk.” I found it strange when other kids did. *laughing emoji* - PUZZLES: F*ck the puzzle piece as a symbol for autism, but I frickin love puzzles! Hehe. Jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, logic puzzles, sudoku, etc. I love words and numbers and they bring me true joy. Also, the satisfaction of finishing a puzzle is an actual high for me. I’ll post pictures of my current jigsaw puzzle and puzzle book collections some time. - ANIMALS: I always have and always will find animals absolutely mesmerizing, fascinating, and most of all, worthy of the utmost love and respect. My pets are my family! Our house is just as much their home as it is mine. All creatures are welcomed and cherished here. - WORDS: OK, I already talked about word puzzles. But I’ve always loved everything about words: Learning new ones, researching their origin, making up my own words, learning other languages, reading books, & spelling words. My fave game to play during car rides with my adults was “GIMME WORDS TO SPELL!” I could do this over and over and over. Dupla excepcionalidade (ou “twice-exceptionality” em inglês) é um termo usado para descrever pessoas que apresentam uma combinação de altas habilidades (como alto potencial intelectual, criatividade ou talento em áreas específicas) e desafios de aprendizagem ou transtornos neurológicos (como dislexia, TDAH, autismo, entre outros). Essas pessoas são consideradas “excepcionais” porque têm habilidades notáveis em uma área, mas também têm dificuldades significativas em outras áreas. Por exemplo, uma criança com altas habilidades intelectuais e autismo pode ter dificuldade em se comunicar e se relacionar socialmente, mas apresenta uma habilidade excepcional, em matemática ou música, por exmeplo. Ou pode ser uma criança que é altamente criativa e talentosa em artes, mas também tem TDAH, o que torna difícil para ela se concentrar e concluir tarefas. Essa combinação de habilidades excepcionais e desafios pode ser difícil de reconhecer, o que pode levar a uma falta de compreensão das dificuldades e dos potenciais desses indivíduos. Por exemplo, uma criança com altas habilidades intelectuais e dislexia pode ter um desempenho abaixo do esperado na escola, e por isso não ser encaminhada para avaliação de dislexia devido às suas habilidades excepcionais em outras áreas. É importante que os profissionais de saúde e educadores estejam cientes da dupla excepcionalidade e saibam identificar esses indivíduos para que possam receber o apoio e atendimento adequados às suas demandas. This week's Famous Friday spotlight is on... Joe Gilgun! Joseph "Joe" Gilgun is an English actor and producer known for several roles, including that of Vinnie O'Neill in the series Brassic, which he also co-created. Gilgun was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD at a young age, describing it as the "biggest pain of [his] life". However, through the advice of an educational psychologist, Gilgun started drama workshops at age eight, and was described as having "exceptional talent." He got his first acting role at only age 10. Gilgun has not discussed his ADHD or dyslexia extensively, but has discussed his bipolar disorder and depression that he was diagnosed with later in life during interviews. In his show that he co-created, Brassic, he is described as going about creating it in "his way," able to find an output that focused his attention. The character he created for the show, Vinnie O'Neill, was loosely based on himself, highlighting his experience of moving through the world having bipolar disorder, being neurodivergent and the "emotional throes" that come with it. His show depicts many of the struggles he has had with his mental health. His ability to create a character that shows someone closely relating to him showcases the talent he had from a young age, likely using his hyperfixation from his ADHD, to become great at acting, as well as his creativity to create a well-acclaimed show. Joe Gilgun's work is important for telling the story of people who are neurodivergent and struggle with mental health issues. If you are a parent who wants their child to have a neurodiversity-affirming IEP, these are some of the goals to get rid of. I see them on about every IEP. I also see them in many "treatment plans" from home-based providers. . What is or is not appropriate for your child is highly individual. It depends on who your child is and what is important for them at this time in development. It also depends on your parenting values and what you as a parent want to prioritize. . The bottom line is, any therapy goal needs to work for your child. It needs to consider your child's skills and the skills that are important for your child to learn. It needs to be realistic. It needs to be child-centered, i.e. it needs to serve the child. It should not be aimed at making the child more convenient or "palatable" to adults around them. "OCD tendencies" was something I heard during my autism assessment but I'm unsure if that is a real thing or just another name for anxiety if I don't fit a OCD diagnosis and wasn't given one. Early elementary, I was pulled put of class for extra support and in smaller schools with my reading and writing difficulties I was put in the classroom with my down syndrome homies. And than 2 schools later I suddenly moved to the gifted class? I didn't hear the term "2e" or " twice exceptional" student until I went for an autism assessment at 29. Apparently, being exceptionally good at part of school but really struggle in others and needing extra supports is a classic autism experience. One I deeply relate to. To this day, these things are struggles I have to navigate in loud public places and when sharing physical space with others. Struggling all day was the norm. I didn't know any different. That feeling you get right before going on stage to give a big speech? That tight chest and deer in headlights moment? Thats what school often felt like, perpetually. Eventually, living like that lead to some major burnout that turned into a psych assessment for neurodivergency, anxiety disorders, or anything else that could be going on. Después de haber participado con Luka y Laura en su programa de acompañamiento, hoy quiero compartir un poco sobre nuestro viaje como familia apoyando a nuestro hijo de 5 años, quien es neurodivergente, tiene altas capacidades y está en el espectro del autismo (TEA). Cada día nos enseña algo nuevo y maravilloso, pero el camino no ha sido nada fácil 😅 y quería compartir algunas cosas que hemos ido aprendiendo: 1️⃣ Celebrar sus FORTALEZAS: Nuestro hijo tiene habilidades y talentos únicos que nos maravillan todos los días. En lugar de centrarnos en lo que falta, nos enfocamos en cultivar y celebrar sus intereses y pasiones. Está manera de verlo se intensificó gracias al enfoque de Luka y Laura. 2️⃣ Comunicación amorosa basada en los principios de la disciplina positiva: Sabemos que la comunicación puede ser un desafío, pero hemos aprendido a escuchar atentamente y a ponernos en sus zapatos gracias a la formación de Dragones Felices sobre como funciona el cerebro, el sistema nervioso y el sistema sensorial de nuestro hijo. 3️⃣ Rutinas y estructura: Para nuestro hijo, tener rutinas y estructura es fundamental. Nos aseguramos de proporcionar un ambiente predecible y seguro que le permita autorregular y le brinde la tranquilidad que necesita para prosperar. 4️⃣ Tiempo de calidad: Desde que hicimos el programa, ganamos en CALMA en casa y nos dimos cuenta que pasar tiempo de calidad juntos es fundamental. Ya sea jugando, explorando nuevos intereses o simplemente abrazándonos, valoramos cada momento que compartimos y nos ayuda a fortalecer nuestro vínculo. Aunque cada día puede presentar sus DESAFÍOS, cada día nos sentimos más seguros de nuestro camino. Nuestro amor y dedicación a nuestro hijo nos guían en este viaje. What is 2e? The term twice-exceptional (2e) refers to gifted individuals who experience one or more coexisting conditions, including medical, physical, sensory, learning, communication, behavioral, or social-emotional challenges. Twice-exceptional individuals have exceptional ability in one or more areas & simultaneously experience one or more challenges that significantly impact their learning and functioning. This diagram offers another way to understand twice-exceptionality. For example, there may be gifted individuals who present learning differences (ADHD, Autism, dysgraphia, etc.) while also exhibiting other conditions such as anxiety or depression & other social-emotional challenges. There is a lot of overlap & 2e individuals rarely present only one challenge or disability. Being 2e is not so clear-cut, but this helps visualize the term.
