The sun comes out & so do our smiles! Fresh air & brighter days are a joy to share with my family. The more I harvest, the more I feel the need to grab every second. May 4th is the @fringesurfing 2024 film night & I hear the tickets sold out super quick 👏 It’s going to be an awesome event showcasing the amazing water people who pursue a different type of surfing. Go check out @fringesurfing & see all the epic prizes donated for the raffle! Many here might already know I had surfed, beach lifeguarded & surf coached for nearly 25 years before the impacts of my stroke/ tumour surgery & shoulder rebuild that changed my life hugely. Whilst in recovery, I wanted badly to return to the sea as I knew this is where I could improve my physical & mental health. Whilst searching for alternatives to standup surfing, I feel lucky to have found this bunch of dedicated fun-loving people who FRINGESURF! The organisers for the upcoming film night event have chosen to support the Stoked Stroke Survivors surfing project with Coastal Crusaders CIC with all donations raised during the night!! Amazing!! 🙏 Basically these funds will go straight in to promoting smiles & fun for other brain injury survivors & their loved ones. The seated surfboard & standup beach sessions partnership with @coastalcrusaders is now beginning its 3rd year. I’m totally floored by the continual support shown by friends, supporters, community & the inspiring people who get behind this idea of promoting the benefits of surf activity to a wider range of people. Cafe PA trip☕️🍽️ We went to our local garden centre that has a cafe inside which is all pet friendly!! We took advantage of how quiet it was and did some training around the cafe area🤩 We did some confidence building and getting Nala to feel more comfortable and confident going under the table and into smaller spaces so that she was out of the way. She did fantastic🤩 we have only worked on this at home so far so she really surprised me and did really well!🥹

Our new addition at Ford Wetley for 2024, the stunning river decking overlooking the cleared undergrowth and the relaxing, heated ‘Hive’ cabin has been crafted by talented local craftspeople. This project has been funded by the UK Government through the ‘UK Shared Prosperity Fund’. At the @theboathousevic!!! Dining out is extremely difficult for us #autistics!!! People stare at us but with the @hiddendisabilities_anz sunflower lanyard program it makes it a lot easier!!! Why do I have a disabled space outside my house? Well I thought it was to ensure that I can park safely outside my home but no, apparently it's so @amazonuk delivery drivers can park easier and don't have to walk as far to deliver parcels to my neighbours. There was plenty of room behind my space, and across the road, but this driver took the very deliberate action to park in my disabled space. When I report it to Amazon, they just tell me I needed to update my account's delivery preferences to include instructions not to park in the disabled space, which is all well and good, but a) how do I update all my neighbours' delivery preferences and b) the drivers don't read the instructions anyway! This happens on a weekly basis and I'm fed up with Amazon not taking action, so I am hoping the power of social media means enough people see this that they decide to do something about it because if it's happening to me, it's happening to many others too! Dit jaar was Koningsdag de eerste keer dat we échte Koningsdagdingen deden. We hielden het wel dicht bij huis. Kleedjesmarkt bezoeken, even buurten bij het wijkcentrum en vandaag zelf op een kleedjesmarkt staan verderop in de buurt. Het ging super. We hebben oude spulletjes verkocht, gespeeld, gekletst en gesnoept. Onze kleine handelaar heeft zelf ook nog wat moois op de kop weten te tikken en had zijn eigen 'zone' in de drukte gevonden door een dekentje op schoot te leggen. Home- education days like today is why we chose to do it. We got there much earlier then our stated time as it said we could do certain activities before our time slot tour. We got there when it opened but as schools had turned up late we were the first and staff said we could go through. Layla was anxious at first with it being dark, unexpected noises and not knowing what to expect but staff were just so amazing and just on it. Also because it was not crowded it meant they had time to explain to Layla what was going on and she could take her time and absorb it. She throughly enjoyed it. I have to say that Cadbury’s World is so inclusive. BSL and subtitles for the shows, chairs in every corner if people need a break, rubbish bins everywhere, more then just one disabled toilet in each place but most importantly each staff were trained to be aware of invisible disabilities. Considering how busy it is; it was also so clean. The staff at the @adelaideentertainmentcentre have been amazing at helping us have some supports and areas to go too should either boy get overwhelmed by all the excitement. Today is Undiagnosed Children's Day. Around 350 million people live with an undiagnosed condition worldwide. There are so many conditions that today we know genetic sequencing can provide answers for 40% of children with undiagnosed conditions. But the other 60% still don't receive a diagnosis. Leyla herself is currently undergoing genetic sequencing to discover if she has a condition that it's believed she does. (Not going into details on this post). Undiagnosed Children's Day was founded by a mother with an undiagnosed child in the USA about 10 years ago to raise awareness of undiagnosed conditions that affect children. In the neurodivergent community, whilst it's not the same, we all know fully how hard it can be for our child to get a diagnosis & how some of them just slip through the net. Amy came to a talk which Gill did at Northumberland County Hall on International Women’s Day and was so moved by our work in Kenya she was the first person to join our team! Amy says: “I’m taking part in the 2025 Kilimanjaro Climb to raise awareness of the women who have suffered with child birth injuries resulting in Stoma. I feel privileged to be part of a team incredible woman who have shown such strength and courage having experienced first hand the impact of living with Stoma. The stories of the woman in Kenya are so inspiring that I decided to join Chameleon Buddies to support the cause to raise enough money to help build a dedicated stoma and continence wing at the Gynocare and Women’s Fistula Hospital at Eldoret in Kenya. Good morning. I'm just so proud and as it got a lot of love on my stories I wanted to share it on here. This is such a big achievement for Ava. When she first started she would avoid going under the water at all costs and would jump in holding the teachers hand. Now, she finds any excuse to go under 🥰😄 she is still very cautious at times as anxiety is Ava's biggest hurdle but wow is she doing it 👏🏻 and she is so proud of herself 🥹 Just need to convince Lilah to start lessons come September😄. Lilah had a trial one in February and wasn't convinced so will see again come September when she's a bit older. For me learning to swim is so important, it's such a life skill that literally saves your life. Did you know autistic children are 160 times more likely to drown compared to their neurotypical peers!
We also had an impromptu visit to the shops on the way home the other day! 🌊 OCEAN LAYERS SENSORY PLAY 🌊 This afternoon William asked for some sensory play, so I quickly made up some oobleck for him into ocean layers.. He had lots of fun placing his sea creatures into the different ocean layers, and number trays for the corresponding ocean layer, before getting extra messy running his hands ( and everything else ) through the Oobleck .. Although he had lots of fun, I’m not too sure that I’m going to be winning mum of the year anytime soon, as despite washing his hands very thoroughly with soap, he may look slightly like a Smurf now 🤭.. PDA has been talked about A LOT on social media, often without nuance or accurate information. As it was new to me, I took a lot of time to really learn about it before I posted. And even then, I thought this would be best if collaborated with a PDAer so I’m so thankful for @rabbishoshana for writing this post! What I’d like people to takeaway from this post: PDAers often fawn at school and then let it out at home. It’s not always explosive behaviors (but it can be!). And this is a nervous system response - NOT something a person chooses or does to manipulate others. PDA is not the synonymous with demand avoidance, which happens for everyone for various reasons. PDA is a complex neurotype. When we support PDAers, we want to support the underlying nervous system disability first and foremost. This usually looks like lowering or dropping demands that put a PDAer into threat and offering as much social equality and autonomy as possible. These accommodations look pretty radical from the outside, but they help PDAers of stay out threat response so they can meet their basic needs, learn, grow, and even thrive. We will be posting together more about PDA in the coming months. When the opportunity to raise money for a hospital in Kenya to support women with stomas I really wanted to be involved in funding for this. Don't judge a disability by its visibility 🔍 Many disabilites and illnesses are invisible or can fluctuate between visible and invisible. Just because you can't see the effects of the illness on the outside, it doesn't mean that they aren't there! 🌈 school update Lillies doing so well since being back to school, she exposed new parts of the school and is definitely enjoying it.. 🐋 ‘WH’ FOR WHALE 🐋 Continuing on with looking at whales, William has been busy with lots of different activities.. We spoke for a long time about the fact that although blue whales are so big, they eat tiny plankton.. ( cue lots of questions about sponge bob 🤣.. ).. William then sorted through his flash cards that I had mixed up to see if he could find all of the cetaceans and match them to his sheet. After he had finished, we looked at the word whale.. namely the ‘wh’ sound.. and William used his chalk board to write down as many words as he could beginning with ‘wh’.. We finished off with a little bit of painting, where Williams painted some blue whales diving through the ocean layers.. Working on doorway frustration on PA trips☺️ We have been working on her doorway frustration and confidence when doing PA trips. We worked on this at our local leisure centre and Nala did great🤩 She’s come so far with this and is doing fantastic! She hasn’t had frustration with doorways in months, so keeping on top of this training to keep her confidence up!🤩💖
