My singular regret during our visit to Moray was not getting to the ruin of Ormond Castle in Avoch where my direct ancestors (and heroes of Scotland)--3 Andrew Murrays--had set up their home base. Standing on a pebbly beach at Moray Firth, we could only catch a glimpse from across the water of the sloping mound where the castle once stood (Photo 1). So here I discuss the 3 Andrew Murrays of Ormond castle. Sir Andrew de Moravia (βSr.β) held the castle in 1297; he is the eldest of the 3 Andrews and βgrand- cousinβ of Crazy Uncle Andrew (prev post). Andrew Sr, along w/ Andrew Jr, were actively fighting for the restoration of the Scottish throne when, during the battle of Dunbar (1296), they both were captured and taken as prisoners of war, A-Sr to the Tower of London (where he later perished) and A-Jr to Chester Castle from which he would escape. Between the time of A-Jrβs escape and the victorious battle for which he is credited (Stirling Bridge), Andrew Jr waged a guerrilla campaign against the English occupiers throughout Moray causing alarm. King Edward 1βs governor in the region was so distraught that he sent an urgent message to the king informing him of the damage de Moray was causing and asking for military help. The tumult culminated at the battle of Stirling Bridge in Sep 1297 where Andrew commanded the only disciplined force on the Scottish side. His phalanx seized the bridgehead and held their ground against the deadly English heavy-horsed men-at-arms and destroyed them. Andrew de Moray led his men in this brutal battle and was found βseverely wounded amongst the slain.' He died later in late 1297. His son, the 3rd Sir Andrew, was born shortly after that battle and never knew his father. Though he was too young to fight with Robert the Bruce in his subsequent effort to reclaim the Scottish throne, he married Bruceβs sister Christian Bruce in 1326 and kept the fires of Scottish independence aflame. Today in history - 11 September 1297Β -Β A Scots army, commanded by Sir Andrew de Moray and William Wallace, win a resounding victory over an English army, commanded by John de Warenne, 6th Earl of Surrey and Sir Hugh de Cressingham, at the battle of Stirling Bridge. Surrey would send 2 Dominican friars to speak with the Scots leaders, and Wallace is reported to have told them, "We are not here to make peace but to do battle to defend ourselves and liberate our kingdom. Let them come on, and we shall prove this to their very beards." The Scots waited for part of the English army to cross the small wooden bridge over the river Forth before quickly advancing. Crushed into a bend in the river, the English forces were overwhelmed. Few who crossed the river managed to make it back over the bridge. The remaining English force, those who hadn't yet crossed the bridge, began to withdraw. The Scots gave chase, plundering the enemy baggage and killing any remaining English soldiers. While a great victory for the Scots in the First War of Scottish Independence, they lost an exceptional commander in Sir Andrew de Moray, who was mortally wounded in the battle. 1599 - Italian noblewoman Beatrice Cenci is beheaded at the Sant'Angelo Bridge, Rome, along with her brother and stepmother, for the murder of her father Count Francesco Cenci. Francesco had been very abusive, so they drugged him, beat him with a hammer, and threw his body over a balcony. 1649 - Oliver Cromwell's army takes the town of Drogheda, defeating the Royalist defenders. Nearly 3,000 are killed by Cromwell's army, with a large chunk being civilian men, women, and children. Today in history - 22 July 1298 The battle of Falkirk takes place during the Scottish Wars of Independence. The previous year, 11 September 1297, a Scots army, commanded by Sir Andrew de Moray and William Wallace, had defeated an English army at the battle of Stirling Bridge. King Edward I of England began preparations to march north with a large army to confront the Scots. Sir Andrew de Moray had been mortally wounded at Stirling Bridge and would die before the year's end, leaving Wallace in command of the Scots army. He began raiding northern England but upon hearing of the advancing English army withdrew to the Torwood, near Falkirk. Unable to catch up to the Scots and suffering with supply delays and a slow moving army, Edward was preparing to withdraw back to Edinburgh. Upon hearing that Wallace and his army were close, Edward made his camp a short distance from Falkirk. On the morning of the battle, Wallace drew his men up in 4 large schiltrons, large blocks of spearman, a tactic used to great success by Moray at Stirling Bridge. He placed a small contingent of cavalry and archers to the front and flanks. Edward's heavy cavalry managed to quickly chase off the Scots archers and cavalry but couldn't break the Scots schiltrons, so the English King called on his longbowmen. Tomorrow, the remainder of the actual Wallace Oak is finding a home in Clan Hunters Castle in Ayrshire. On this Day in 1306, Isabella MacDuff, the Countess of Buchan, aka The Lady in the Cage, crowned our Greatest King, Robert the Bruce, King of Scot's. Isabella is one of Scotland's greatest heroes π Isabella crowned Robert the Bruce King and suffered at the hands of Edward Longshanks for following her Patriotic duty. His punishment? Isabella was hung in a cage from the walls of Berwick Castle for 4 years and died in captivity. The Clan MacDuff had for 200 years previous, the hereditary rite to crown the Scottish Monarchs. With her young brother Duncan, Earl of Fife, held captive in an English Court, she raced to Scone and gave the Bruce's Coronation legitimacy. Edward I thought he held the 4 Aces: King John Balliol in exile, the Stone of Destiny and Scottish Crown Stolen and the Kingmaker Duncan, Earl of Fife in his court. Step forward the most fearless of Fifers, young Isabella MacDuff, who stole her husbands horse and raced to Scone. Her husband was namesake and cousin of John Comyn, who the Bruce had slain. By following her Clan Duty, she could never return to her husband. When she arrived at Scone, Bishops Lamberton and Wishart had already conducted the ceremony the previous day. Isabella demanded her Clan rite, and the following day, 27th March 1306, Isabella MacDuff crowned Robert the Bruce for a second time. Isabella would suffer terribly for undertaking her Clan Duty. When your average tour is 3 - 4 people, a minibus load of ex soldiers might feel a bit daunting. There was no need to worry. The group were absolutely brilliant.
