1993 – Our first Sir Antony Gormley Sculpture Around the same time that we entered the rainwater market, our Chainman Michael Hinchliffe was approached by Antony Gormley (now Sir), to cast a sculpture on his behalf. It was quite a daunting task from a casting point of view, and not something that the foundry had ever contemplated before, but Michael, who’s always been up for a challenge, decided to go for it. The pattern, as seen in the first picture, was actually made of plaster. An extremely unpleasant material to cast from, according to Michael. After a lot of problem solving and a couple of all-nighters, the team in Halifax successfully cast the sculpture, which was named “Still Running” by Sir Antony. Since then, we’ve cast hundreds of pieces on his behalf, and continue a close working relationship to this day. Crosby Beach, home to the installation ‘Another Place’ by Antony Gormley. 100 cast iron life size figures (Gormley himself) placed over 2 miles of beach. This has been on my ‘list’ for ages…a last minute decision after needing to be in Manchester at early o’clock Easter Sunday. I found it fascinating as a group piece and individually…each one weathered in a different way; smooth closer to shore or barnacle encrusted further out, some festooned with all sorts of stuff from scarves, flowers and even a toy gun. As a group they are disconcerting at low tide…I imagine even more so as the tide comes in.
