“The world needs all types of minds” is a famous quote from Temple Grandin. And it is one I can speak to from personal experience. My son Brandon, diagnosed with autism as a child, has shown me that the world needs his mind. Brandon will graduate from college next year with an associate degree. He was on the wrestling team all through high school and finished with a letterman’s jacket. He is a hard worker, and he is diligent. And while his diagnosis years ago punched me in the stomach and I cried the entire car ride home, I am here to tell you that not only is there support & resources for those diagnosed with autism and for those that love someone diagnosed with autism, but that there is hope. There is strength. There is resiliency. We’re so proud of our newest Peri-op 101 students! Karla Bruner, RN, Johanna Doucette, RN, Katie Nocella, RN and Katy Whistler, RN all passed the AORN Peri-op 101 Exam March 8th. The group started the program in September of 2023 and will be off orientation the end of June. The Peri-op 101 Program is a blended learning course that incorporates didactic online modules, clinical preceptorship, and skills labs. New Graduate Nurses are eligible to apply for the program. I have been an OR nurse for 23 years, graduated with an associate degree in nursing from India in 2000, moved to the United States in 2005, completed my BSN in 2015, and then my MSN in Nursing Education at Capella University in 2023. I have been an AORN member since 2007, and CNOR certified since 2008. I am currently working as a Staff Nurse III at Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center. I am also part of the Voice of Nursing and Evidence-based Practice Council at the organization, OR Nursing Unit Council, and Department Safety Committee. Being a CNOR certification coach, I am committed to working tirelessly to elevate the standards of operating room nursing practice through education, certification, and integrating evidence-based practices. Throughout my career, I have been deeply committed to promoting excellence and evidence-based practices within the operating room environment.
