Exciting signs of life on the apple tree! I’m so relieved as when we moved in I didn’t even know this existed! It was stuck behind a bed filled with large roses and was completely swamped. Once I realised it was there, everything got cut back and the tree itself was pruned as there was loads of dead and diseased branches. Lots of branches crossing each other and rubbing too, not to mention fruit dropping. Kitchen Garden… A precarious balance between control and nature’s chaos 😁 This is where I’ve been working today. Planting. Weeding. Installing a sweat pea teepee. Picking a harvest of radish and salad leaves for today’s meals. ABOUT THE NO-DIG KITCHEN GARDEN Created in 2020 and repeatedly extended and developed since. Initially just 6 timber raised beds filled with peat free compost. I added HeBEE Corner the same year. A pollinator garden with low mounding hebe hedging. Save for a few bulbs, it’s left alone to fill with cow parsley, foxgloves, dead nettles, and campion. A little bit of wild to offset the orderly control of the raised beds 👍 Then I built a wood store and added a small deck to cover a random dangerous gap between a retaining wall and garage wall. Have no idea what the previous owners were thinking?! This is where I now have my coldframes against the warm sunny south facing wall. Then the compost bays were built. Two at first. Then three. Then a fourth. Then a leaf mould bay too 😁 All vegetative waste, slugs and snails are deposited here 🐌🐌🐌 Lastly, the #cuttinggarden. It was a weedy patch that I covered with a black plastic tarpaulin for a year. This killed the weeds very effectively. No chemicals required. Then it’s been repeatedly mulched with all the spent compost from all the seasonal pots and planters. Boosted with manure and homemade compost. This will be the first year growing and today I planted the first plants - larkspur, gypsophila, cynoglossum, nigella hispanica, and Ammi visnaga. They’re all hardy. Hardy as in ‘will survive frost’ but not sure about incessant torrential rain and marauding battle hardy slugs and snails - it’s going to be a massacre tonight!! 😩 It doesn’t matter that I’ve given them an entire 60m long 5m high bank, that’s completely wild. Noooooo! Eat my damn veg and flowers you little sods! I am pretty pumped for this raised bed. I went with a simple sturdy construction using Northern white Cedar and @gripriteproducts MAX stainless exterior screws. I’m thinking cherry tomatoes because they’re just fun and easy to grow, to start. Ideas and advice always welcome! A perpetual coriander bed, cover an area with coriander seed in spring and enjoy eating the leaves and delicious flowers. When gone to seed and dry rub the seeds off the plant over the soil and start all over again. As you can see they will sprout at different times and give a long production of coriander only really ending in January. I really need to learn to wear gloves 👀 Lovely day today, managed to get a few hours outside. I sowed some more seeds for the greenhouse, mainly bedding plants. I’m still apprehensive to sow veg as I have nowhere to plant them into just yet (it’s on the agenda!). I also got some dahlia tubers from a garden centre 50% off, and along with the 5 or so varieties I ordered from @sarahravensgarden - I think the next few weeks are going to be a busy bluster of cuttings and potting on! I even got chance to arrange this area next to my greenhouse which was all a bit mish mash. I’ve now got two large water butts and a compost bin ready to go. We started a walk-in greenhouse and a raised bed with a greenhouse cover! Slowly filling up the walk-in with starter trays, broccoli, green beans, a blueberry bush, a blackberry bush, banana trees, mini thumb watermelons, and zucchini.. next weekend we will fill the raised bed with soil and plant carrots, lettuce and tomatoes! Siitä se ajatus sitten lähti. Kuten tarkkaavaisesti seuranneet tietää, olen jo talvesta saakka suunnitellut tähän tontin kulmaan ”jotain nättiä”. Suunnitelmat on vaihtuneet moneen kertaan, ja niin kävi tänäänkin. Mulla oli kypsynyt jo suunnitelma laittaa tuohon turveharkoilla tehty kohopenkki, johon istutan ainakin jonkun rhodon tai atsalean. Mutta kun eilen en lähtenytkään Hankkijalle, niin malttamaton mieleni ei jättänyt rauhaan. Siispä pihan perältä tiiliä kantoon, risuja, lehtiä ja multaa - säkin reunoilla multa oli jo sulaa. Alppiruusun sijaan täytinkin altaan vuorenkilvillä sekä ihan tätä tarkoitusta varten tilaamillani perennajuurakoilla, yksi pieni jalokurjenpolvi, kalliokielon ja kolmilehden juuren pätkät jotka eivät olleet esikasvatuksessa lähteneet kasvamaan. Lisäksi istutin viime joululta selvinneen jouluruusun ja työnsin multaan niin ikään hyvin elottomilta vaikuttavat balkaninvuokon mukulat sekä napolinlaukkoja. Maahan vuorenkilpien paikalle istutin jo hyvin kasvuun lähteneet hopeasyysvuokot, jotka tulivat viikolla postissa. Alue vaatii vielä viimeistelyä ja kivikkokasveja (ja ehkä jotain muutakin jos nuo epävarmat kasvit ei lähde kasvamaan), eikä se ole tieltä päin kovin kauniskaan, mutta onpahan jotain muuta kuin pelkkää heinikkoa. Plus sain pari kottikärryllistä lehtiä pois pihasta 😄 Nyt pitäisi vielä keksiä mihin istutan kevään ruukkusipulikukat, ja sitten voisikin alkaa orientoitua työviikkoon. Ja vappupäivän pihatöihin 😄 As those who have been following closely know, I've been planning "something pretty" for this corner of the yard. The plans have changed many times. I'd already had a plan to put a raised bed in there, where I'd plant rhododendron or azalea. But it turned out different. So some bricks, twigs, leaves and soil and a set of plants, roots and bulbs. The area still needs some finishing (and maybe new plants if those iffy plants don't take off) and it’s not quite as pretty as I planned, but it's something other than just grass. We’ve had a busy day upgrading some of our existing raised beds to include a mesh cover to avoid the devastation we faced last year of caterpillars decimating our crops. ~ DET VÅRAS FÖR VÅREN ~ Dagen har bjudit på något extremt humörsvängigt väder med både regn och solsken. Vi svängde förbi Blomsterlandet och där köpte jag en Hängsälg, vit Doftpion och Lavendel som sattes ned i rabatt på studs, våren kommer ju på måndag 🙈😍 (Tipsar om att Blomsterlandet har 20% på alla perenner just nu) Passade även på att rensa bort ogräs i rabatter och skapade en ny rabatt där våra 3 plantor av blåbärstry skall få växa upp tillsammans 🫐 Imorgon skall vi skapa snygga rabattkanter till den nya rabatten och så ska vi så lite "popcorngräs" med barnen, tycker dessa plantor blir roliga och ger ett trevligt uttryck!🍿 Detta år har jag verkligen insett att jag börjat så gurkan lite för tidigt då vissa av plantorna redan ger små blommor trots att själva plantan är knappt 2 DM hög. Planted some things in the poly tunnel today. It was chilly and drizzly outside but in the poly tunnel you can pretend it’s early summer! The first bed has aubergine, sweet pepper, Padron pepper & chillies. I’ve planted a lot in here, but from my experience last year these plants were quite slim & tall. I’m supporting them with canes. The second bed has tomatoes & a couple of marigolds. There’s some space at the front where I’m planning to add some basil plants. The night time temperatures here look to be on a steady increase now, with day time temperatures going up to 19 degrees next week. Perfect time to try to get all these lovely plants going properly. Excited to see how things progress. I have 4 more beds to create in the tunnel. 🍅 🌶️

Here’s a peak at my raised bed gardens. Eric had oak lumber cut 8ft. long, 3 ft. wide and 12 inches deep. (Total $70) We built them together. Two of the boards had not been cut down to 3 ft. so he taught me how to use a power saw! I dumpster dived at some local stores for cardboard. Each bed has a solid 1-2 inches of layered cardboard for weed control. I covered that with twigs, rotting wood and grass clippings to not only fill some space, but also the organic materials will break down and give nutrients to my plants. Dirt ain’t cheap! @loweshomeimprovement has a soil calculator that I used to determine how many bags I would need. I went with ten bags of @miraclegro and ten bags of off brand. (Total $140) If anyone reading this has any free dirt for my other three beds, I’ll dance at your wedding! I could not believe the price of dirt! The first bed was planted with kale, romaine, and cucumbers. I’m hoping to get more veggies planted: peppers, squash, cherry tomatoes…but again, I gotta see what I can do about dirt! 🤷🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️😂 I’m a sponge, wanting all the gardening tips I can get.
