Delighted to share this portrait of Mary Ellen has been shortlisted for this years Portrait of Britain award and will be featured in the next book. When I asked Mary Ellen’s mum if I could photograph her she spent a good 5 minutes fixing up her daughters outfit before saying I could take one. The new #dalle3 text to image ai from #bingimagecreator is amazing. With it I am able to create more authentic looking scenes that remind me of my ethnic communities and cultures. I didn’t take many photos at Appleby Horse Fair this year - but here is one of a stallion cooling off in the river 🐴💦 Appleby Horse Fair is an annual gathering of Gypsies and Travellers taking place in the Cumbrian town of Appleby. It is the largest traditional Gypsy and Traveller Fair in Europe and was historically a place for meeting and trading horses. The main things to see are the washing and riding of horses in the Eden river and the trotting of horses up and down the roads around the town - but mainly in the flashing lane. Many of the horses at the fair are Traditional Gypsy Cobs (as I have posted about before), but there is a mixture of all breeds. Gaited trotting breeds are very popular for racing, and high stepping trotting cobs are seen frequently too. You can see the influence of breeds like the Dales, Fell, and Welsh cob in many of the horses at the fair.
