A year ago today I landed in the Faroe Islands and met the amazing and rare Faroese horse - how I wish I was going back! 😍🐴 There are sadly even fewer now than there were last year (mostly due to old age) with less than 85 left in the world. They are one of the rarest horse breeds alive today. They share many similarities with our native British breeds, both in their traditional uses and in their physical shared ancestry. The Faroese horse was traditionally a multipurpose work horse. They transported peat, seaweed, manure etc. They are thought to have been brought to the islands by Norse settlers. Some of these Norse settlers travelled via the British Isles on their way to Iceland (with the Faroe Islands being between Britain and Iceland). This is why the British Atlantic breeds horse and Icelandic horse. The Faroese horse was once vital to life on the Faroe Islands. Now they face extinction. This is a shared story between many of the rare breeds around the world. The Faroese horse struggles for demand - there are not enough horses being born and not enough people on the Faroe Islands with the space or means to own them. There is a demand for them abroad, but sadly exporting abroad in the modern day is not possible by law as horses need a passport to leave and enter a country. There is currently no passport issuing organisation for them and therefore no passports. This means that the horses can only exist in the Faroe Islands where owners are hugely limited by land and resources. This passport dilemma is a Government issue and it is severely endangering these horses. It is a very real possibility they will become extinct in the near future if things do not change. Carneddau pony stallion known as Red when I visited a few years ago🌱🐴. The Carneddau pony was recognised last year by @rbstrarebreeds as a feral population and appear on the Watchlist under the “Other” category. They can’t be recognised as a breed as there is no studbook or breed standard (which defines a breed), but this is still important recognition. Carneddau ponies are one of the purest forms of UK native ponies, they have not been selectively bred for looks or work, only for survivability on the mountain. There‘a been little (if any) introduce blood since the Tudor times - they are the original Welsh pony and largely a product of nature. Legend has it that the ponies escaped a cull ordered by Henry VIII (as they couldn’t carry a Knight in Armour) by living in the mountains where they couldn’t be hunted. The truth is a little more boring. Henry VIII certainly wanted to “improve” the general quality of horses, and his Acts in 1535 & 1541 were more related to commons grazing. It seems Henry did not want good grazing to be taken by “poor” animals. He wanted poor, old, & infirm animals removed or culled - and this was done annually which is where the practice of gathering has its roots! What is so unique is that these ponies have never been “developed” - there are no imported breeds in them unlike their close cousin the Welsh Mountain Pony (which had breeds like the Arabian & Barb introduced). They’ve roamed the Carneddau mountains for centuries where they’re still found today, managed in much same way as centuries ago. DNA studies show them to have a shared ancestry with Welsh Mountain (Section A) Ponies, but they are genetically distinct enough to be a separate breed. They hold valuable genes that need to be protected. These ponies are incredibly important to the ecology of Eryri 🐴⛰ ©Ruth Chamberlain also known as Ruth on the Hoof. It was unfortunate to see the amount of people getting ticked off at Cumbria Wildlife Trust for having Exmoor ponies at one of their sites rather than Fell ponies (the Cumbrian native pony). Now I know I always advocate for a native breed in its native place - but sometimes we have to be practical and Exmoors are still a rare British native breed and a popular choice in grazing schemes. The site in question has had Fell ponies in the past, and indeed they were wanted again - but the simple answer is there just couldn’t get any Fell ponies in time to go to the location (which is only grazable at certain times of year). It really isn’t as simple as “get some Fell ponies”, there are factors to consider such as the owner not being able to regularly handle/show/train/ride their pony and the distance they may be from home - they may not be willing to send their pony away. The Exmoor ponies belong to @exmoorponycentre (Moorland Mousie Trust) - a charity set up for Exmoor ponies which is well known for sourcing ponies for grazing (long and short term). They are well set up and they make it easy (not without a huge amount of work on their part) for organisations to get in touch and request ponies. @heritagefelltrust has successfully sourced them Fell ponies in the past, and they do great work in finding Fell ponies for projects. Similarly, @fellponysociety have been really pushing the breed in all sorts of circles (including conservation). This year it just didn’t work out - but hopefully Fells will be back next year (perhaps some Fell pony owners will see this and want to send their Fells there next year) We need to see the bigger picture - they are using a native breed. There are Fell ponies doing conservation work in Kent, there are Highlands in Lincolnshire etc - the important part is they’re native! If people feel so strongly about using native breeds in native places then they need to be proactive themselves - send your own ponies, volunteer for relevant breed organisations such as the Fell Pony Heritage Trust - it’s a lot of work, but that’s what is needed to make it happen. Please support organisations who recognise the value of native breeds such as CWT 😊🐴

An Eriskay pony at the highest point on Eriskay - he had a good view indeed! 😍🐴 The Eriskay pony is one of the oldest and rarest breeds in the UK. It is the last remnant of the western isles pony and survived extinction due to isolation by sea of Eriskay. It was utilized by the islanders until better connections were made to Uist and the Mainland. During this period, machines became more available replacing the work of the ponies, threatening their existence. These ponies are critically rare and hardly found outside the British Isles 🐴⛰. There were around twenty left in the world during the 1970’s, and due to the hard work of the crofters and locals, they saved the breed and formed the mother society and studbook (@eriskaypony_original_society). Eriskays have a very dense coat that is shorter than most of our other natives, most likely an adaption for living by the sea. They are prized for their lovely temperament and willingness to work, which makes them an ideal family pony and working partner.
