Happy OT Month! Feeding is an important skill OT’s work on a daily basis. Here are some tips to help your child participate in feeding! 1. Explore new foods through play - get creative and make food a fun experience! 2. “Touch, smell, kiss, lick, bite, eat”- This food progression method helps your child become comfortable by first touching the food with their fingers, smelling the food, then eventually working towards kissing, licking, biting and eating it. 3. Model - provide positive interactions with food so your child can see the food presented isn’t scary. 4. Did you know that April is Occupational Therapy month? 🤓 I am constantly getting confused for a physical therapist even by my closest friends and family members, and I take no offense to this (seriously it’s fine). Most people think occupational therapists just help people find jobs (not true unless that’s your goal!) or maybe if you know a little more, help children with their handwriting. However, occupational therapy encompasses SO MUCH MORE than that. To call us experts on how to hold a pencil or how to put on your socks after losing function in your arm would seriously sell us short on our education, experience, and creativity. What we do, simply put, is help you live your life with dignity, functionality, and optimal independence. We focus on client-centered care with a holistic mind-body approach, meaning that we help you achieve what YOU want to do 💯 I was attracted to this field because I knew every day at work would be different and challenging, and that I would get to combine all my interests (fitness, art, health and wellness) into my profession, which most people can’t say they have the pleasure of doing 🙌 My experience as an OT has not only led me to my career in acute care, but has also led me to another one of my passions, health coaching and yoga teaching, which I have the pleasure of doing in groups and one on one with customers in my supplement business as well as privately. I am especially thankful for mentors and others who have pushed me to explore what’s possible as an unconventional OT ✨ I find so much value and purpose in what I do, and I am so grateful to work with some fantastic and compassionate people (you know who you are!) who make up the excellent rehabilitation team at Nassau University Medical Center 🏥 Do you know any fabulous occupational therapists? I always knew I wanted to become a Pediatric Occupational Therapist (OT) working with the special needs and autistic community from the amazing fieldwork experiences I had as an OT student. Not sure if it started with that 8-year old boy with autism who fascinated me with his memory of our first encounter or the first grader who never forgot how to pronounce my name after hearing it once (which no one gets right). However, my pursuit to become a Child Life Specialist (CLS) also stemmed from my love for the autistic community. If I can learn how to decrease anxiety in children in medical settings as a CLS then I can help my autistic kids who may be anxious at baseline. If I can prep children for medical procedures then hopefully I can prep a child whose anxious about a change in their routine. Using interactive and developmentally appropriate tools to prep, empower and understand my autistic children allowed me engage with them more meaningfully. But I soon realized that I became an advocate for this population in a setting that may otherwise not support their needs - hospitals! From creating social stories of the hospital experience to preventing sensory overload in the ER - I was able to help educate staff and parents on better supporting their autistic children in stressful medical environments. So although I initially pursued Child Life to better understand how to decrease anxiety in autistic children, I ended up loving my role as a CLS as an advocate and support for special needs children in hospitals and especially in the ER.

Finals week is now over for my program and summer break has officially begun! This week was challenging... All of my nights were spent studying for the next final and my days were filled with reflections from my courses, the fieldwork experiences of the senior cohort, and the doctoral capstone experiences of the graduating class. I want to show you what our finals week schedule looked like as well as post this as a reminder for what I was able to overcome! 04.19 - Research Theory Final (60 questions), cumulative, worth more than 25% of our final grade 04.20 - Research Practicum Final (2 problems, with 5 questions each), required to select a parametric and non-parametric test to represent our data 04.23 - Therapeutic Use of Self Final (50 questions), cumulative 04.24 - Conditions Final (50 questions), cumulative 04.25 - Neuroanatomy Final (75 questions), cumulative, worth 20% of our final grade Whoo!! Beginning the week, I felt slightly overwhelmed... but as the week continued and I would finish one final, I was reminded that I am prepared for this. I know more than I think I know. I’ve learned so much this semester, but everything has truly connected in a way that makes so much sense. I feel more prepared than I ever have before. Wanted to take a minute between sessions and acknowledge the therapists working on the frontline during this time! As this month comes to an end, I want to take the few days left of April to celebrate OT Month! It’s amazing to see how every single therapist has stepped up during this crisis putting our clients first without hesitation. A special shout out and thank you to all the OTs working on the frontline. All of us therapists that are able to work virtually appreciate you all beyond belief! I knew the world of OTs has always been a big family but during this time, the definition of being a team and supporting one another has truly been demonstrated. Beginning work as a full time OT during a pandemic may not be the most ideal thing... it definitely has its challenges. Despite this, I can’t help but count my blessings every day. Very grateful to provide valuable occupational therapy and essential social interaction to my residents who can’t see their family during this time. To those who are scared, worried and consumed by the media. It may not be easy, and I may fall asleep at 8pm most nights... but I’d never ask to be anything else. This is what I worked so hard for in school and what I want to do forever. I hope all my fellow OTs/OT students are embracing this month despite its many changes ❤️ #OTmonth #occupationaltherapy

There is a very special place in my ❤️ for hospice patients which makes this a meaningful task. Happy OT Month! 💓 Meet Jess :: owner/director of BLOOM Sensory Gym & pediatric OT . Jess was inspired to become an OT when she was 11 years old. Her 5-year old cousin suffered from a rare CVA (stroke) resulting in hemiplegia (paralysis on one side of the body). Through intensive therapy, her cousin regained most motor skills. She was fascinated by the therapists who were teaching her how to walk, how to chew & speak, how to feed herself, how to brush her hair, how to write her name, how to button her shirt. She never forgot those moments and knew she wanted to be in a profession that helped people in an organic way. Her journey brought her to mental health outpatient work with a bachelors degree in psychology & biology. She went on to receive her masters degree in OT. Jess loves working with children and has been a pediatric Ot for 8 years throughout a variety of settings in Manhattan & Brooklyn. She has extensive training and experience in sensory integration. Jess utilizes a creative & holistic approach to working with children:: Jess pursued her dream & recently opened North Brooklyn’s first pediatric therapy center, BLOOM after learning there was a need for support in her community. BLOOM is temporarily closed due to COVID, teletherapy sessions for OT, PT and speech are available. 🎉🎉🎉April is Occupational therapy month!!!! 👏A time to thank all the OTs at CTD and around the globe for the dedication, patience and heart they pour into their work. 🙋🏾🙋🏼🙋🏻♂️Occupational therapists work hard to help their patients achieve independence in every day living. Whether its through strengthening or developing skills for social situations or recovering from an injury, OTs are there through every milestone to achieve their goals. 🌈For most occupational therapists, this month will be a time of change and new challenges, working with patients through online services to make sure they are still receiving the treatment they need. 👏👏👏And to all the OTs and health care workers on the front lines, an extra heartfelt thank you!!👏👏👏
