Why homemade Timeless Dough? I have tested multiple recipes to find what works best. Homemade dough is softer and nontoxic. I have even tested to see how long it lasts if you accidentally leave it out. At 24 hours it was soft enough to save. If your dough becomes too dry add a couple drops of water and kneed the dough. 👃🏻 Sense of Smell 👃🏻 Easily Mr T’s favourite type of sensory play is using his sense of smell. He always asks to make spicy muffins and has a wonderful time smelling all the spices, learning their names and tasting them. All I do for this is put different spices out for him to explore and he mixes them all in a bowl. The fancy pants term for this type of play is engaging his Olfactory system (sense of smell) . Mr T, like me, has a very strong sense of smell. He notices the different smells people have, really dislikes strong smells like perfumes and stinky farts (who doesn’t haha), can tell when things are finished cooking just from the smell. Smells that he doesn’t like can have a huge impact on him and it is always so interesting watching how he uses his sense of smell throughout the day. What do you need: 💙 2 cups of a regular flour 💙 1/4 cup of oil Mix it with a spoon first and then use your hands to crumble the sand. I've used Egyptian figures and hid then in the sand. The proprioceptive sense is another one of the lesser known senses in our sensory system, but it is incredibly important for understanding where your body is in space, or “body awareness.” Proprioception gives us information about our body position and body movements, and uses sensory receptors located in muscles, tendons, and joints. If you close your eyes and try to touch your nose, proprioception is the sense you are using to identify where your nose is in relation to your fingertip. Proprioceptive input can include what therapists call “heavy work”: positions that involve weightbearing on the hands, pushing or pulling something heavy, or moving against resistance. Proprioceptive input is generally calming to the nervous system- like a tight hug, massage, holding a “downward dog” pose, or using a weighted blanket. Day 11: We've tried this new dough recipe today and it was not the best 🤷 What do you need: 💙 1 cup of cornflour 💙 1.5 cups of shaving foam We've mixed both ingredients and playdough was... ok but not as smooth and bendy as the cloud dough we did few days ago. Actually it crumble quite a lot. Note to myself : that might be a good fake snow recipe 🤔 We've tired cover our shape mats with the dough and learn new shapes. This play escalated quickly. We've used few animal stencils and eventually stick coins in it to compare patterns. So the girls were engaged for some time. Recipe wasn't the best but we still had fun. Oobleck is one of the sensory plays we are gladly coming back to. Anytime! 💛🧲 Aquafaba Foam - day 6 🧲💛 Recently we were testing 2 ingredients sensory play. One recipe a day, for £2 and less. Day 6 brought us magnetic wands and EDIBLE foam! Day 6: Today we were aquafaba foam. What is aquafaba? Nothing more than a chickpea water. Open a can of chickpea, drain it, use chickpea for your dinner, use water for a quick play. What do you need: 💛1 can of chickpea 💛1 flat spoon of cream of tartar Mix it in the tall container using blender or mixer. Just like you do with egg whites. I've hidden few orange and yellow magnets in our foam. Girls were using magnetic wands to retrieve them. One was looking for orange magnets and the other was searching for yellow colours only. Don't have to mention that the foam was tested with our hands, mouth and feet 😅 Remember that these are only super quick and simple ideas! The sessions are led by autism specialists with a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of autism / SEN. We have built a lovely community and safe space where everyone is welcome.
