How many times have you heard someone say, “why are you complaining? I/they/she/he had it much worse!” Followed by, “at least you had _______” On top of those statement being highly problematic and invalidating, it makes negatively impactful experiences a competition, too. Not everything in life has to be a competition. You are enough. Everyone’s lived experiences are valid. Everyone’s trauma is valid. There are lots of things I’m good at. Writing. Trivia. Cooking. Shenanigans. Laughing like a hyena. But not math. Math actually makes me cry. I can’t make change from a dollar. Today’s Healing Miles are in memory of Bob Kolquist of Granbury, TX, who died by suicide in November 2023. This retired Air Force pilot and middle school computer teacher was known for his love of his family, cars (especially Corvettes), and all things computers. I’ve remembered Bob previously. His daughter, Gina, is a fellow 🏃🏻‍♀️ runner—a member of my favorite running group, a fellow Stiletto brand ambassador, and one of my running sheroes TBH. Gina remembers her Dad as her biggest cheerleader—both in life and in general. When asked what she misses most about Bob, his daughter Gina shared: “All the things … His kind and generous heart and desire to share information with everyone. It's a busy week this week with clients who have a range of problems. I was always told to find a niche, but I enjoy working with different problems as I find it interesting. The great thing about hypnotherapy is many of the skills and psychoeducation can be adapted for many different problems. This is not only great for me, but great for my clients as they can use everything I teach them for many of life's challenges long after they have finished treatment with me. Hypnosis is a fantastic tool, and when combined with cognitive behavioural therapy it is extremely effective. Finding a therapist that is right for you can feel like such a daunting task. Which is why I have become the therapist matching service for all of my friends. Ask any of them. I was the one who hooked them up. But for those of you who aren’t my close friends, I’ve got a few tips for you on how to find a therapist. 1. Think about the kind of approach you would prefer: There are as many therapist approaches as there are stars in the galaxy these days. So what approach aligns with your values and your goals for yourself? Doing some research online from reputable sources about therapy approaches can be a huge resource. 2. Interview your therapist: Knowing what approach works for you can point you in the direction of a therapist, but you still have the right (and I highly encourage you) to interview your therapist. Ask them whatever questions are leftover from your research. 3. Don’t hesitate to ask questions. Even after you select a therapist to work with, questions will come up as you go. The right therapist will not be offended by questions and will help point you towards the answers. 4. Notice if you feel safe and oriented to your therapist’s approach. After your first session or two, check in with yourself and ask if you feel safe with this therapist and feel like you understand how they will work with you. The biggest problem other practice owners have is not speaking enough about how you can be the solution to your audience's struggles.
