Viaggiando in giro per il mondo e studiando le opere lasciateci dai nostri antenati, però, ci accorgiamo che l'astronomia era un elemento chiave in molte culture antiche spare su tutto il globo. E tutto ciò spesso per motivi religiosi, ma in molti casi anche sulla spinta di una pura e semplic curiosità scientifica! In foto Rujm-el-Hiri, antico sito archeologico noto come "Ruota dei Giganti" o "Stonehenge del Medio Oriente". Questo sito archeologico israeliano resta ancora molto misterioso, tuttavia, come Stonehenge, potrebbe aver avuto uno scopo astronomico: siccome i cerchi presentano due aperture, da una delle quali il giorno del solstizio d’estate si può vedere sorgere il Sole, si suppone che fosse un osservatorio astronomico. Vi sono altri punti che coinciderebbero con la posizione da cui nascono certe stelle. Questa idea potrebbe essere la più verosimile, in quanto i nostri antenati hanno dimostrato spesso un notevole interesse per i fenomeni astronomici. Ancor più misterioso è il periodo di costruzione: nel sito non sono stati ritrovarti reperti utili per la datazione al radiocarbonio. Gli esperti stimano possa avere 5000 anni, o anche 5500. Se così fosse, Rujm-el-Hiri sarebbe più antica della Grande Piramide e della stessa Stonehenge. UNA MAPPA STELLARE SU ARGILLA Ritorniamo a parlare di archeoastronomia dopo tanto tempo. Per chi non sappia di cosa stiamo parlando, l'archeoastronomia è una scienza di genesi abbastanza recente, qualche decennio, che studia il legame tra il cosmo e le antiche costruzioni (e non solo) sparse un pò in tutto il mondo lasciateci dai nostri antenati. Il termine deriva dalla contrazione delle parole "astronomia" e "archeologia" e, chiaramente, affronta entrambe le branche del sapere mescolandole, al fine di stabile se (e come) una determinarata opera abbia una connessione con la volta celeste. Esempio di scuola è Newgrange in Irlanda, la cui entrata è allineata col sole che sorge nel giorno del solstizio d’inverno. Nell'immagine vediamo il reperto K-8538 del British Museum, una tavoletta di argilla rinvenuta nella biblioteca del re assiro Assurbanipal a Ninive, in Iraq. I moderni studi di archeoastronomia hanno consentito di stabilire che la tavoletta si riferisce al cielo della Mesopotamia nel 650 a.C.. Sulla tavoletta sono raffigurate alcune delle costellazioni più importanti, come i gemelli, nonché l'ammasso delle Pleiadi. I due triangoli sulla sinistra starebbero a indicare alcune stelle della costellazione di Perseo. Questo è solo un piccolo esempio del modo in cui nell'antichità si osservava il cosmo. In assenza di tecnologia, era necessario utilizzare le modeste risorse all'epoca a disposizione degli uomini. Ed è anche per questo che gli esperti sono rimasti scioccati dopo aver rinvenuto, in una barca affondata 2000 anni fa circa, un antico ma sofisticato calcolatore astronomico, ossia la macchina di Antikythera. CASA RINCONADA Casa Rinconada, the largest of the excavated great kivas in Chaco Canyon, stands out for its unique features and significant cultural implications. With an internal diameter of sixty-three feet, it distinguishes itself in several aspects including that it is isolated from the main complex and located half a mile from Pueblo Bonito. Additionally, Casa Rinconada’s stonework exhibits superlative quality, its builders paid meticulous attention to symmetry and orientation, being within half a degree of true north along the north-south axis. The construction of Casa Rinconada involved building downwards, featuring floating floors rather than the traditional upward construction of kivas. The design aligns with Native creation myths, which state that kivas were designed in a circular shape to mirror the circle of the sky—a design still preserved in contemporary structures. The kiva served as a sacred space where Ancestral Puebloans believed they could contact the spirit world. It was also used to symbolically reenact the journey of spirits, known as kachinas, from the sipapu. The Sipapu is understood to be the place of emergence where humans emerged from creation. Within Casa Rinconada’s interior, researchers discovered wall niches containing strings of beads and pendants. The space features 28 regularly spaced compartments and six larger niches, two on the east and four on the west. The number 28 holds significance in archaeoastronomy, often associated with the lunar month, adding an astronomical dimension to the site. While the exact purpose of Casa Rinconada remains unknown, its size, construction, and orientation suggest a place of great spiritual and astronomical significance. LA PORTA DEL SOLE, RETAGGIO DI UN ANTICO POPOLO ASTRONOMO Ritorniamo a parlare di archeoastronomia dopo tanto tempo! La Porta del Sole è uno dei capolavori tramandatici dai nostri antenati, un'opera che testimonia l'importanza dei fenomeni celesti per gli antichi. Fin dall'inizio l'archeoastronomia è una scienza affrontata da questa modesta pagina, e ciò mi ha portato spesse volte a spostare la mia attenzione alle antiche civiltà del continente americano. Ignoriamo buona parte della storia di popoli straordinari come quelli Inca e Maya, ma una cosa è certa: l'astronomia permeava le loro usanze, i loro credi e le loro tradizioni! La Porta del sole appartiene all'antica città di Tiahuanaco, culla della omonima civiltà, sorta più di 2000 anni fa tra Bolivia, Perú e Cile. Il sito di Tiahuanaco ha dell'incredibile, per via delle imponenti costruzioni realizzante da uomini profondamente esperti in ambito ingegneristico. Molte sono le opere allineate astronomicamente, sia per motivi di culto che per lo spasmodico bisogno degli uomini di misurare il tempo e il moto degli astri. La Porta del Sole di Tiahuanaco fu ricavata da un unico blocco di andesite sul quale vennero incisi rilievi, principalmente nella sezione trasversale collocata sopra il vano della porta, lungo 1,40 metri. Il rilievo centrale mostra il "dio dei bastoni", una figura armata di due scettri a forma di serpente, attorniata da altre 48 figure alate, di cui 32 con volto umano e 16 recanti la testa di un condor. La Porta del sole venne così chiamata perché posizionandosi davanti ad essa all'inizio della primavera si può osservare che il sole sorge esattamente sopra la metà della porta. Five years ago my brother Julian @batmanandbruno and I were marveling at the stars screaming through the psychedelic dark skies of #LeTerrain and it was clear to us this was very special, needed to be protected and needed to be shared. We decided to create the non profit Earth and Sky Foundation. Over the years we have taken on board members and appointed a president @steedmaneric. We have recently won the LaPeche green fund grant of 15k which is being used to engage in a feasibility study with the ambitious goal of creating an official dark sky preserve for the national capital region located in the municipality of LaPeche, Quebec. With the support of the region, the municipality, the NCC as well as the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada we are getting very close to that goal! Our philosophy is to protect the night skies we must first protect the land. So this is a wilderness conservation effort that goes hand in hand with the ongoing conservation of @theland and #leterrain wilderness park. Standing Stones of Stennes - Located on the Brodgar Peninsula, 5 miles north-east of Stromness on the mainland of Orkney, in Northern Scotland. The giant megalithic slabs of Stennes were once part of a Neolithic henge monument, which is thought to be the oldest stone circle in the British Isles. The site is situated 1.2km south-west of the famous Ring of Brodgar. Only 4 standing stones remain at the site today, though they are among some of the tallest megaliths in Britain, the tallest of which measures 6m (19ft) high. These thin stone slabs measure from approximately 30cm (12inches) to 15cm (6inches) thick, and all have sharply cut angled tops. For centuries it was thought that there were originally 12 equally spaced stones within the circle, however excavations have revealed that the circle was in fact an 'ellipse', and only contained 11 stones, with an entrance on the circle's North side. The circle in its completion would have had a diameter of 32m (105ft), on top of a leveled platform with a 44m (144ft) diameter. Excavations have also shown that the stone circle was once surrounded by a circular ditch filled with water, which was cut into the bedrock 2.3m deep by 4m wide. Carbon dating has revealed that the ditch was constructed around 3100BCE, although it's possible that it may have been a later addition to the pre-existing stone circle. At the centre of the monument Is a 2.3 meter - square hearth, which was possibly used for fires during rituals and ceremonies, some believe it may have also been used for sacrifices. On the Northern edge of the circle is a collapsed dolmen, with two supporting stones remaining, this type of structure is found abundantly throughout north-west Europe, but none are found within henge monuments such as this. Outside of the circle, approximately 500ft to the north-west is another large standing stone known as the 'Watch Stone', measuring 5.6m (18ft) high. The stump of a second stone was also found close by to the watch stone in the 1930s, historical documents suggest that this stone once stood at a staggering height of 12.8m (42ft), over twice the size of the stones that remain on the peninsula today.
