My installation “deodand” came about from thinking on property in early common law and our relationship to nonhuman and inanimate objects. “Leila Galloways installation deodand was the fruition of a two week residency at Extractor Space, the former school kitchen in Deptford’s Tidemill School Annex in London. Deodand was an old English law, abolished in 1862 that legislated that anything thing that had caused a person’s death and was to be forfeited to the crown for a charitable purpose, it came from deōdandum, from Latin Deō dandum (something) to be given to God, from deus god + dare to give. deo dand Time scales seemed moored into poised moments within Extractor Space, flint gravel from the seashore arranged into simple geometric squareness, branches spindling up from the stones, bare and seemingly growing. Silver permeated, glinting on the flint pieces, pooling against a wall and floor, a magical silver tree in a side room growing upwards and downwards through a windowsill. This extract from Barns-Graham’s 1976 diary demonstrates the artist’s sensitivity to colour, and how she experienced her surroundings. In her description of the sea and weather in St Ives, she mentions pinks and browns, which is quite fitting considering the recent popularity of Barns-Graham’s 1991 screenprint, Orange and Red on Pink! It reads: “Great change in weather – quite fierce gale all day & night & high seas & much cooler - & blessed shower of rain last night. Worked most of day. Two weeks ago a first part of Philippe Van Snick’s archive was donated to the Ghent University Library in the context of the Pilot Project: 'Space for Philippe Van Snick. Physical and digital space for preservation and public accessibility of the Philippe Van Snick archive (1968-1990)’. In preparation for this donation we went through part of the archive at the Estate encountering some beautiful documents. The goal of this donation is to make valuable information on the oeuvre accessible through a public institution. Beyond: at or to the further side of; happening or continuing after (a specified time or event); having progressed or achieved more than (a specified stage or level); to a degree or condition where a specified action is impossible; apart from; except. Depot: a place for the storage of large quantities of equipment, food, or goods; a place where buses, trains, or other vehicles are housed and maintained and from which they are dispatched for service; a place where recruits are trained or other troops are assembled. Some snaps from the current Eduardo Paolozzi exhibition at Modern Two gallery in Edinburgh to mark the centenary of the artist's birth. The antidote to recent sprawling Paolozzi retrospectives, this comprises a modest three rooms - including the space the contains the artist's reconstructed studio ( co-opted by the curators so that it informs the work in the room - something I tried out in my Paolozzi exhibition there a few years ago). The show contains some rarely seen material from the massive and impregnable Paolozzi archive - good to see that his writings are now being considered, as well as his work in industry. The late art historian, Robin Spencer -who shed light on Paolozzi and Nigel Henderson's textile designs - would have been delighted. After years and years of commuting for work from London - one day in 2012, I just couldn’t get on the train, so we moved to a small hamlet near Market Harbrough called Glooston, surrounded by fields and farms, with no street lights, the nearest shop being 5 miles away - what a change from inner city life! During this time I didn’t have a studio, I was burnt out, disillusioned with making art, morally thinking there’s so much stuff in the world. I always promised my kids that if we moved from London then we would get dogs and of course who walks the dogs? - it was my saving grace - the surrounding landscape became my studio. ***Object no. 4: Film Photo Taken Somewhere in Central Park*** I recently found loads of scanned film photos on my photo archive, one of them being this. I took this photo (with my 30+ years old Contax film camera that had a roll of Kodak film inside) sometime in the summer of 2017, while sitting on a bench near the Metropolitan Museum. I remember the exact moment that I saw these two people. They were slowly strolling down the park, wearing similar suits with almost identical hairstyles. They looked old and wise; they just did. They seemed to be deep into their conversation and enjoying the beautiful surroundings of Central Park although it looked like they’ve been there many times before. So enlightening and simple. 🟡 Introducing... Artist Archive artist Angela Andrew (@cookiesjammin). Angela Andrew is a performer, educator and producer. Her work is informed by layers of theory and practice: street dance, partner-dancing, youth and community education and music. She was born and raised in Hackney, which is core to her identity and has informed her practice over the years. The combination of her musical family background, classical music training, love for jazz and her passion for dance made for a natural progression to search for the roots of street-dance, the Lindy Hop. Angela ‘discovered’ Lindy Hop in 1991, she soon after began travelling the international Lindy Hop scene. She is renowned for her contribution to the development of the community – including mentoring new teachers and pioneering out-of-the box events – and her unique yet grounded teaching style. Her passion drives her to continue to spread and develop the Lindy Hop; her emphasis on the soul and roots of the dance. “Give me these moments back…give me that little kiss” words by Kate Bush from the song ‘This woman’s work’. Choosing her track because at the time I was thinking about repetitive picking as a form of lament - a way of becoming intimate with past sorrow - picking flowers as a tender contemplative gesture. In 2015 I took 2nd year students from DMU for an eight-day stay at Cyprus College of Art College, Lempa, Paphos. The trip was organised as part of the #DMUglobal programme. Y justamente es lo que algunas prácticas artísticas están haciendo. Simplemente hacer uso de la esencia del arte para llevarlo a otro lugar, a otros territorios, olvidando el inmovilismo y la contemplación pasiva que obviamente va en beneficio del status quo. In 2010 Andy Price (artist, work colleague at DMU) and myself had an idea, which never materialised - I’m sure #ai AI can make it happen! - Just putting it out there! Conversation: A conversation is proposed between the sculptor and teacher Phyllida Barlow and the writer and sociologist Richard Sennett. Phyllida Barlow has been vocal in debating sculpture and is an energetic and generous questioner of what the subject could be. Richard Sennett, particularly through his recent book The Craftsman (London, Allen Lane, 2008), has developed insights into the relationships between people and materials in very wide fields. The interaction of these two thinkers should produce a valuable document that will contribute to current discourses about the state of contemporary sculpture. The re-positioning of materiality and process as both physical and mental work has been highlighted in several recent and planned exhibitions and conferences: Hirshhorn Museum: The Uncertainty of Objects and Ideas: Recent Sculpture (2007); Kettle’s Yard Material Intelligence(2009); UAL International Sculpture Conference: What is Sculpture in 21stCentury?(April 2010). Thinking about bits! - in my previous post I wrote that I couldn’t articulate what my small bits were doing in my work - that’s not entirely true - they’re actually key to my practice! Small bits are part of a whole, they belong to something greater than the part and have potential to form a system which doesn’t t need any external control. Bits have a sort-of self organisation - an internal character/chatter, that can spontaneously come together or fall apart - forming a dynamic system. A bit of a divergence here, but there is a thread - my last post got me thinking about how the art that we/I make/made is specific to a particular time in history - there seems to be a shared understanding or #collectiveconsciousness . A few weeks ago I went to see #duneparttwo , I never saw the original film in 1984 - Ah! I was such an art snob, I was more interested in going to see independent films at the Aaben cinema in #hulme #manchester Whist a 1st year student I made this work in early #1984 - before the original #dune was released, but I did see #alien in 1979. Looking back there were lots of sculptors making podlike forms - it’s though we’re all emerging at a similar time together! 1. Work in my 1st year as a student at Manchester Poly, 1984, made from sawdust and plaster. 2. Here’s a 3 images of the work I made for Cardoso Art and the church behind, in the #garfagnana , North Tuscany, Italy, 1995. The whole event was organised by artist Keane @barganews , it was a weeklong residency in the village of #cardosogallicano Cardoso, resulting in all artists from all over the showing their work. I hadn’t planned what I was going to do, turning up with no materials and little money, I bought tinfoil and fishing wire from the local hardware shop - I choose to position my work around the church - I remember I was thinking about how the view down the valley was so consuming, I tried to make something that wasn’t in competition with it, but became part of it - gently interfering - thinking back - it was a pre-runner to my piece “Limbo” at London Art Forms 1995. Phyllida Barlow used to ask me what was going on with all the small bits in my work? - I always fudged it, I wasn’t able to articulate it, ha! I’m still fudging it because I don’t really know - maybe it’s how we roll peas/food/snot/stuff between our fingers or maybe its because their like pearls/seeds/pellets/insects - I’m not sure, but here I was thinking about viruses in the landscape - when I lived in #edinburgh , AIDS was rife in the 80’s in Edinburgh - I lost friends! Update - I just remembered whilst I was making the work, the local choir was practicing in the church - Ava Maria over and over - it was so powerful - listening and looking at the view - one of those magical moments when your glad to be alive! #mystory #herstory #ourstory #artistarchive #aids
